The Horrible Loss of War

A star running back from Iowa loses his leg in combat. He doesn't want to live once the leg is gone. Hawkeye and BJ do everything they can to save the leg but it is way beyond repair. The plot shows the contrast between the silliness of fighting for petty reasons and what is going on in the OR. Frank decides to have Klinger and Zale settle their differences in the ring. Meanwhile Hawkeye must break the news to the poor man who blames them for the loss. He sees football as the only thing in life. Hawkeye blames himself, even though he knows he couldn't have done anything. Unfortunately, suicide begins to become an issue. Radar comes to the rescue.

Trivia
The first African-American football player at the University of Iowa was Frank "Kinney" Holbrook, who lettered in both football and track in 1895 and 1896. He accounted for the only score, a 30-yard touchdown run, when Iowa beat Wisconsin 6-0 to capture the 1896 Western Interstate Conference championship.

Goofs
During a bar-room brawl, someone is thrown through the shoji room dividers. Although these traditional screens are made of paper and wood, there is a sound of breaking glass.
