Born out of leftovers from the last mix, plus re-finding my Three Mile Pilot CDs, realizing the Oiseaux-Tempete title is from Hakim Bey, finding this Orchids remix via The Pastels, and hearing this Ocean Blue track on the radio and reminding myself that I used to like them back in the 90s.  The swirl of my thoughts all came together here.

549 Steps and Flashes of Music as a Drug

Time to get those dancing shoes on.  This is not entirely a funk mix, just some dance oriented music that isn't techno.  Seeing !!! perform in or around 2000 was certainly a highlight and a fun evening.  I still think their first self titled album was their peak.  Same with the related group OutHud, they were on a roll until they added vocals, just wasn't my cup of tea.  Hope this mix gets you movin and a-grooving!  I sure can't sit still while listening to it.

480 Hip Hop Mash-Ups pt1

Novelty music for sure, however some of these really work well.  In my opinion that's a rarity as there seems to be a flood of average mash-ups out there.  Sometimes there is alchemy and these two mixes really showcase the tracks that keep me coming back looking for more mash-ups.  A couple are loosely in this genre like the Kid 666 track, that is Kid606 remixing Missy Elliot, and its included here for the awesome inclusion of A-Ha's "Take On Me" at the end.  Girl talk is more like a massive mash-up mixtape, with some really great spots.  That Cut Chemist remix is not really a mashup, but its got such a strong use of Bauhaus that I had to include it.

00:00  Amerigo Gazaway - B.I.G. Poppa's Got A Brand New Bag (The Notorious J.B.'s: The B.I.G. Payback)
03:48  The Wudos Band - Ayno Tellin (Wu Tang Clan vs Budos Band Mix Tape)

20:10  Max Tannone - Mourning Unknown (Dub Kweli)
23:26  Mos Dub - History Town (Mos Dub)
26:37  Prince Fatty - I Know  You Got Cumbia (Eric B. and Rakim vs Lito Barrientos Y Su Orquesta)

476 Filling Jane's Void

The recent drama on the most recent and very short-lived Janes Addiction reunion tour, prompted me to reminisce about how much I loved them back in the 90's, and was utterly disappointed with their first reunion.  They even joked about this on a How I Met Your Mother episode.  As such, I decided to pull together a fun set of tracks from all the other bands that the members had participated in, hence the title of filling the void left by their absence.  I stuck with the original core four line-up of Janes Addiction: Perry, Stephen, Eric, and Dave.

Psi Com is Perry's band before Jane's, and his attempt at some kind of gothic post-punk which works in small doses..  Porno for Pyros is Perry and Stephen's post-Jane's band.  Deconstruction is Dave, Eric and Stephen right after the original Jane's break up.  Polar Bear is Eric's subsequent solo project.  Dave did several one off projects for tributes: Honeymoon Stitch for Joy Division, Camp Freddie for David Bowie, Ruined Eye for Germs.  Stephen Perkins did a few of these as well: Class of 99 for Pink Floyd, Cold Ethyl for Alice Cooper, and Broke Dick Dog for James Brown however I was too nervous to search that term to find their music.  Stephen also was the exceptional drummer for the Suicidal Tendencies side project Infectious Grooves.  Summer Moon is a one time supergroup with members of The Strokes, Uh Huh Her and The Airborne Toxic Event, with Stephen on drums.  The Panic Channel is Dave and Stephen with the then bassist of Janes Addiction Chris Chaney, joined by Steve Isaacs as the vocalist, whom I'm unfamiliar with.  NHC is similar in that Chris Chaney and Dave are here again, this time with Taylor Hawkins from Foo Fighters fame. Banyan is truly a supergroup; this track features Mike Watt, Stephen, John Frusciante, Willie Waldman and Joey Klaparda.  Other tracks feature Flea, Buckethead, Nels Cline and tons of others that I am only a little bit familiar with.

The side projects I didn't include are Broke Dick Dog, Li'l Pit which I couldn't find, Satellite Party which is Perry's band and I heard there was band drama where he gave his girlfriend too big of a role and the rest of the band quit, and finally Red Hot Chili Peppers where Dave was a short time guitarist while John Frusciante was on one of his multiple breaks. I was not a fan of this era, Mother's Milk was the last album I bought and enjoyed from them.

00:00  Janes Addiction - Ocean Size (Butthole Surfer's remix)
04:19  Psi Com - Human Condition
10:51  Deconstruction - Wait For History
16:50  Polar Bear - Lick
22:10  Honeymoon Stitch - Day of the Lords (Joy Division)
26:56  Porno For Pyros - Cursed Female
30:15  Summer Moon - With You Tonight
33:29  Banyan - La Sirena
36:33  Class of 99 - Another Brick In The Wall pt1
41:38  The Panic Channel - Tea House of Spirits
44:47  Ruined Eye - Land of Treason (Germs)
47:44  Infectious Grooves - Punk it up
51:31  NHC - One and the Same
56:04  Cold Ethyl - Welcome to My Nightmare (Alice Cooper)
61:10  Camp Freddie - The Jean Genie (Bowie)

332 Black Sabbath Covers

Oh yes, I am passionate about Black Sabbath, and have the t-shirt "You can only trust yourself and the first six Black Sabbath albums."  I'd like to update that and say only the first four.  There are several tribute albums out there, and certainly a mixed bag of quality in the output.  I've picked what I consider to be some of the better versions here, and a few that are just cool interpretations or surprise appearances.  Only repeated one track, because they were such different interpretations, plus I love hearing the Budos Band back up Charles Bradley on his version.  Yeah, I know I used Brown Sabbath multiple times here; it should be obvious that I don't follow the rules of a mix tape set forth in High Fidelity.  Hopefully a surprise for the casual listener is Beth Gibbons from Portishead doing a tremendously cool version of the namesake track.  I had a friend that kept pushing the Cardigans on me, which I only knew "Lovefool."  Turns out they did several Sabbath and Ozzy covers in their own style and they work pretty well.  I honestly kept the track by Shelter in here because it may not be the best cover, but it is not everyday you get to hear Hari Krishna's doing a cover of Black Sabbath.  I left off Helmet's version in place of Quix*O*tic, and Marissa Nadler in place of Rondellus - they were both pretty mellow and this one fit better as a closer.  I wanted to include the Matmos cover of FX but it really didn't fit in anywhere, which I suppose was the point of the original track on Vol 4.  I did include these on the spotify mix because some other tracks weren't available (a common theme with that platform).  Who knows, I may get motivated and make a part 2 for this mix someday.  I had to choose something totally absurd, but also true for the cover here.

290 - Alt Grunge Funk

Way back in the mid 90's somehow a blend of funk and grunge music came together, and only lasted a short while.  There were certainly a lot of imitators and sub-par music, which only made the real gems stand out so much more.  I made this mix mostly because I wanted to find a home for Primus and Fishbone, and include the pre-pop phase of the RHCP, along with a friend of a friend's bands World Separation and Pope on a Stick.  Then I remembered how much I liked Live when they first came out, though I had to dig through boxes to find their CD.  Then I wanted to end the mix with probably the only Faith No More and Living Colour tracks I still have in my collection.

00:00  Infectious Groove - Punk It Up
03:46  Fishbone - Bonin in the Boneyard
08:17  Loudhouse - Faith Farm (edit)

256 - Fun and Funky mix

Yep, this is a fun and funky mix for sure.  Very reflective of a point in time for me, but also nostalgic for some history.  I was re-watching Enter the Dragon when I realized the soundtrack kicks some serious butt.  A local radio station played this Roxy Music track, which honestly I'd never heard before and I got into the groove.  There's a lot of crate digging for sample sources like Bob James (come on, everyone should recognize this), Onesness of Juju (FSOL), Shamek Farrah (Scorn), Ken Thorne (Portishead), Mina (Elvis Costello) Shub Niggurath (Scorn).  The track from Selda is a great protest song, worth it to look up the translated lyrics.  My phone's ringtone was this Hildegard von Bingen song for quite a while, can't listen to it without looking at my phone now.  It took me far too long to track down this Dimitri from Tokyo EP, my friend had this on vinyl back in the 90s, and he swore up and down that this was Dmitry from Deee-Lite, which I believed for the last 20-30 years.  My last annecdote is that I sadly first heard The Damned on Phantasmagoria, when I really should have started at the beginning with Damned Damned Damned, anyhow this track stuck with me for is sillyness for a goth/punk band.

248 - Beastie Boys Instrumentals

The neighbors at my first apartment in college would play the Beastie Boys every day.  Seriously, everyday for a year I heard them.  I always appreciated their music, but hearing it so often and not of my own free will caused some resentment over time.  Then near 20 years later I was open to revisiting their catalog and I'm sure I'm not the only one that thought it was a good idea to compile all the Beastie's instrumental tracks in one place.  They're such talented musicians on top of their rhyming ability.

Episode 171 - Samples used by MBM

Jack Dangers has impeccable taste in choosing samples, which are essential components or hooks to his tracks.  Here I have selected a few dozen examples which should be easily recognizable for any casual listener.  Though MBM may only use a few seconds, I have included about a minute or so of each track to show more of where it came from.   The YouTube playlist has even more as I added some film dialogue samples too.  This should supplement my previous post Episode 125 that covers most of their formative years.
