Spitwater "Neon Gray" 2022
Storm Surge of Reverb 2018: Spitwater is a sort of mad-scientist band, with every track employing surprising and interesting twists while their unique guitar sound gives off a noisy, rusty sorta sound.
... they’re great at concocting simple, accessible surf riffs as a backbone to all the strangeness. Every spitwater album is bursting with ideas...

Impala "El Rancho Reverbo" 1994
El Rancho Reverbo" was the first release by Impala, back in 1994. So, obviously, this is not a "new release" by any means; however it is new to my CD player! Recorded in Memphis TN at Sam Phillips Studio, "El Rancho..."' does hearken back to the simpler times of twist, twang and reverb...
...Impala features John Stivers on guitar; Scott Bomar on bass, Farfisa organ and guitar; Justin Thompson on tenor sax; and Jeff Goggans on drums. Additional players include Alex Green on Hammond organ and "Sunrise" on trumpet.
The CD kicks-off with the oh-too-short "El Rancho". This 31 second tidbit begs to be developed into a full-fledged theme suitible for the next Sergio Leone spaghetti-western episode. "El Rancho" whets the appetite, and leaves you thirsty for more, gringo.
The second cut, "Odalisque" is a stomping surf number full of drive and reverb. A catchy melody, rolling drums and a haunting tone makes this cut particularly memorable. "Ronnie and the Renegaids" is a rockin' little number with just a touch of the reverb. Although a simple arrangement, "Ronnie and the Renegaids" is a hopping tune, for sure.
The next few cuts on this CD take a little detour through the cornfields: "Wild Night at the Bloody Bucket" has a Chuck Berry-esque roots rockin' sort of feel to it. The twanging Telecaster sound of "Wild Night..." may not be everyones cup-of-tea, but I found the tune to be fun and an enjoyable listen.
"Last Tango in Turrell" really caught my attention. I am a sucker for Latin rhythms coupled with haunting reverb guitar. "Last Tango..." ands in a chirpy sax line and several beautiful twists and turns. "Last Tango in Turrell" really shines and stands out as an "instant classic" on this CD.
The hauntingly-trippy-slow-dance-sax/organ/reverb-sound of "What the Astronauts Drink" proves enchanting. The sax and organ have just the right live ambience...this tune sounds as if it were recorded in the Rendevous Ballroom: lots of space and natural reverberation. Simply another beautiful cut.
"Anna Vienna" is a cool surfer's stomp type number...very energetic and a cool tune. "Open All Night" is a soul-style tune, but soul in the old Booker T and the MGs sense...sort of a "Delano Soul Beat" number. The organ/sax/trumpet interplay is way cool and smooth. A very Stax-influenced number.
"Taos Pueblo" provides yet another dose of reverb and drive...the tune is simple and somewhat one-dimensional.
In "Have You Seen This Man", the twanging Telecaster sound returns, but this time it is tempered with a healthy dose of reverb. You can almost make out the lyrics (or rather make up the lyrics) as you listen to this nifty melody.
Near the end of the CD, two tunes in particular stand out: "Hell of a Woman" and "Experimente in Terror/Stalkin". "Hell of a Woman" is a smokey sax-driven minor-keyed theme for some pulp-style detective tale. Very moody...think: "Twin Peaks Soundtrack"...and you know what I mean.
In the final cut, Impala, trys their hand at a medley: Mancini's "Experiment in Terror", coupled with Lee Hazelwood's "Stalkin"...very intriguing, to say the least.
Overall, Impala hits the mark with "El Rancho Reverbo". They deliver a nice collection of moody, authentic surf-style tunes mixed up with some nasty rockers and a touch of country twang. Overall, the playing is very good with only a couple of minor problems...occasionally the instrumentalists are out of tune, or playing in the wrong key. Also, sometimes the rhythm (or tempo) seems to noticebly vary in an annoyingly wobbly sort of way. Very slight problems, probably only noticeble to the musicians in the listening audience.
Overall, I'm glad I picked up "El Rancho Reverbo". Impala certainly delivers up a tasy slice of reverberated roots-style rock-n-roll. Twang! - Submitted by dp on July 15, 2006

Katatonics "Swamp Terror" 2017
The Katatonics are a three piece surf rock band from Bloomington, Indiana, known for their energetic and reverb drenched instrumental guitar music...
...Formed in 2013 by Chris Hack they've been performing local venues and touring when possible. They have had several releases since their debut, including their first official EP 7" Swamp Terror, in 2017. In 2023 Katatonics released their self-titled album which received the Punk Rock Night of Indianapolis award for best local release. The latest single EP release "Panther in the Sky" has been released independently through the band's house studio KATBAT Records. This latest release reflects the most recent line up change, with Sam Pierce of the Swing Rays, on drums, Chirs Hack on guitar, and Mike Morgan on Bass. The Katatonics evoke vibes of classic surf from the early 60s while being refreshingly modern. Whether you're new to the surf music genre or a faithful fan of all the classics, The Katatonics continue to deliver the tunes. Currently working on a new full length LP set for a 2026 release. definitely stay tuned.

Palooka 5 "Radio Telescopes" - 12"/45rpm EP - 2023
Whilst gigging in Medway late 2022, Palooka 5 nipped into Jim Riley’s Ranscombe Studios and banged out four stompin’ hits; these being those very four!
Palooka 5 play 1960s tinged ‘sci-fi surf music’, think B52s with a ‘bad vibrations’ modern twist. Signed to the ‘Spinout Nuggets’ record label their three LPs have received spins from BBC Radio 6 Music DJs. Palooka 5 tick all the boxes for that curl shootin’ shape throwing surf hoodang in space you’ve always dreamed of!

…and now for something completely different! 3081 - 2026
These damned religious fanatics, politicians, warlords, and so on... Instead of sending the children of their peoples to THEIR OWN WARS, these idiots should settle their differences in large arenas with boxing matches or football games! For example, the "peace-making" Evangelical Messiah Agent Orange against the belligerent Putin, or the Pope in his ridiculous disguise against the bearded Ayatollahs with beards down to their navels...

Spitwater "Save those Whales" 2019
Storm Surge of Reverb 2018: Spitwater is a sort of mad-scientist band, with every track employing surprising and interesting twists while their unique guitar sound gives off a noisy, rusty sorta sound.
... they’re great at concocting simple, accessible surf riffs as a backbone to all the strangeness. Every spitwater album is bursting with ideas...

Katatonics "SLAPBASSSURF!" 2016

Palooka 5 "Alien Grace" 2023
Palooka 5 play Sci-Fi Surf - think B52s/Joe Meek, with a ‘bad vibrations’ modern twist. They tick all the boxes for that curl shootin’, shape throwing, surf hoodang in space that you’ve always dreamed of!..
...Please be aware - a live show will potentially leave you on a space station somewhere between Taunton and the moon, or further…
The band released their debut long player ‘Rough Magic’ in 2018, which was followed in 2020 with ‘Ultra Marine’, and then a re-issue/rebranded ‘Rough Magic’ in 2021, due to demand. Since inception, Palooka 5 have played more gigs than there are days in a year…
The band have received great airplay from the best stations near and far, and have also gained top reviews for their albums and live shows.
Following the success of ‘Ultramarine’ and ‘Rough Magic’, Palooka 5 went in to record more hits for the next release, and ‘Alien Grace’ is a ‘luna stew’, mixing lo-fi Joe Meek style production, spacey theremins and bubblegum pop. And with much shouting about their live shows, the band decided to also capture one of their live outings for one of the continuous grooves, the venue of choice being their favourite - The Night Owl Finsbury Park, London.
The band have a long list of live outings for the year ahead, so don’t be a fool and miss out!

Ìxtahuele "Dharmaland" 2021
Blown away by this amazing album, honoring the legacy of the great Eden Ahbez. Pure bliss! Lieblingstitel: Fire of the Soul. - Stefan Nieuwenhuis
Eden Ahbez's "Dharmaland," arranged and performed by Ìxtahuele, is the first-ever recording of this long-lost masterwork by the original hippie composer of "Nature Boy." Resurrected from Ahbez’s unrecorded sheet music, c. 1961-63, Ìxtahuele has woven an enchanted tapestry of mystic exotica and experimental pop that re-establishes the songwriter as a forefather of psychedelic music and brings his work into the present. They are joined by a host of guest artists, including nine of Ahbez’s friends and former collaborators, as well as contemporary performers Kadhja Bonet, Xenia Kriisin, and King Kukulele. The composer’s own handmade drums and bamboo flutes also appear throughout the recordings. As author Domenic Priore writes: "'Dharmaland' is to Eden Ahbez what 'Smile' was to Brian Wilson."

Trashcan Records Vol 13 "Bad Taste Special"
A way out and over-the-top collection of zany songs taken from the exotic record collection of Fedor. This may seem to be like an odd one, but as I explained before the Trashcan series was originally only made for a handful of friends of mine, and not for widespread sharing on the internet. And one volume with Dutch/Belgium language weirdness seemed like a great idea at the time. So here we have songs about abortion, aids, alcoholism, lsd, an anti-feminist rant, a 19 year old nymphomaniac (at least that's what the 45 sleeve promises) and so on...
...However, for the non-Dutch listeners there is some good stuff to enjoy as well. You'll find some funny punk novelty records, a bizarre ode to Jimi Hendrix, a Dutch cover of Surfing Bird about a washing machine and a cool mod dance tune by Samantha.
Personally, I love this comp for its completely bizarre and politically incorrect lyrics and horrible tuneless singing (Monja!)... so enjoy (maybe?) - Fedor

Spitwater "Tapping the Source" 2018 + "The Secret of Terror Beach" (Super Sound Maxi Single) 2018

The Evanstones "1961" 2020
Three long years have passed since The Evanstones last release. Three years of toil and sweat and horrible smells. Now, by popular demand, and as was predicted in the scrolls, The Evanstones bring you more of what you, the discerning listener, didn't even know you were craving so desperately...
...But you were. Oh yes, you were. And we here at Evanstones world HQ heard your silent pleas, even before you plead them and responded with great haste combined with glacial deliberation to bring you what many are predicted to call the Surf Album of the Decade! Or at least some of you. OK, our mom's. There. Are you happy now..?
