...Everybody would meet in drive-ins, the most famous of them being the Piccadillyout near Sepulveda Boulevard. It was a hell of a show, all the weird looking roadsters and custom cars, with very loud varoom-varoom motors. By this time Barris had a '36 Ford roadster with many exotic features.
"I had just come from Sacramento, and I wasn't supposed to know anything. I was a tourist, but my car was wilder than anything around. I remember one night this kid comes up with a roadster with no handles. It looked real sharp, but he had to kick the door from the inside to open it. You schould have seen the look on his face when he saw mine---I had the same thing, only with electric buttons". The real action, though, was the drag racing, which was quite, but quite, illegal.
"We'd all be at the Piccadilly or some place, and guys would start challenging each other. You know, a guy goes up and down like it has gangrene or something, and he says: 'You wanna go?' Or, if it was a real grudge match for some reason, he'd say 'You wanna go for pink slips?' The registration on the cars were pink; in other words, the winner got the other guy's car." ...November 2000 marked the beginning of a hiatus, as drummer Ted Pilgrim moved from Portland to Memphis, TN to sweat, get autographs from all of his Soul and early Rock n' Roll heroes, and eat Bar-B-Q...
...After a few years off, Musick Records announced that they wanted to release a retrospective culled from the Pilgrims' original five albums. With renewed interest in the band sweeping the surf message boards on the internet, the Pilgrims decided that this occasion deserved some new material to keep their faithful fans from the 1990s as satisfied as possible. The band began writing songs again via the internet and got back together to record four new songs for "Plymouth Rock-The Best of Satan's Pilgrims". What made this reunion of sorts even better was the fact that guitarist Bobby Pilgrim, who had amicably dropped out of the band in 1998, was ready to play again, returning the Pilgrims their trademark 3 guitar sound. With the release of Plymouth Rock-The Best of Satan's Pilgrims" in December of 2004, it was revealed that the Pilgrims haunted brand of driving-guitar, dance-party music had endured into the 21st century. Without a single live appearance by the band since 2000, this album has gained more critical acclaim and worldwide notice for them than all of their original releases did during the surf-bombardment of the 1990s...

Mr. Finewine Detroit Soul Vol 2: "Doing Even More Stuff In The Shadows Of Motown" 2005

Here's a rare compilation of very obscure R&B/Soul (mostly 45s) from the vaults of famed WFMU DJ, record collector, and club DJ Mr. Finewine of Brooklyn, NY. (Born and raised in Detroit, Michigan)
Mr. Fine Wine grew up in Detroit in the 1960s and ’70s, surrounded by music and by music-industry royalty. His schoolmates included the offspring of Motown stars like Eddie Kendricks and David Ruffin; his uncle owned a local jazz and soul record label and (believe it or not!) taught John Lee Hooker to play guitar chords. An avid collector of soul 45s for the past 30 years, Fine Wine took up DJ’ing soon after he relocated to New York City in the late ’80s. His radio show, “Downtown Soulville” (www.wfmu.org/playlists/sv), has been converting casual listeners around the globe into soul freaks since 1994. TimeOut London magazine called it one of the best independent music podcasts in the world, and the Village Voice named it New York’s Best Radio Show in 2011. In addition to presiding over some of the hottest local dance parties through the years (including the Empire State Soul Club and Bumpshop), he has held down a weekly residency at Manhattan dive bar Botanica since 1996—perhaps the longest-running weekly soul-45 listening party anywhere, and one that has been profiled in The New York Times (https://www.nytimes.com/2018/08/09/nyregion/soul-music-botanica-radio.html) and attracted visiting luminaries such as Keb Darge, the Budos Band, Yo La Tengo, Cut Chemist, the Dap Kings, and the Dirtbombs. The Breakers "Voodoo Treatment" 2020

When did you form the Breakers as a band, and what did you set out to achieve with The Breakers as a surf-rock entity?..
...Jim Abrahams: Well, a mutual friend who was bartending at a local venue suggested that I come play some guitar at an open mic that they had started there. I didn’t know how many people would want to hear surf instrumental tunes, or know any of them to play along with. So, I programmed a Digitech drum pedal with 6 songs, and figured I’d do like a 1-man Joy Division / Surf set.
Before I had the chance, I met Marc, who, as it turned out, was running the open mic, and who said, “I love that stuff! I’ll play with you, and I think I know a bass player here who would fit the bill.”
It clicked right away, and I have literally never used that drum pedal, after spending all the time programming that thing!
It got to the point where we were pretty much regular staples at that open mic, and that thing became our practice, pretty much. I would email the guys covers to do, and some new ideas, and we would talk about some new original ideas over a beer there, as well. That was the start.
When did you write and record the 2020 Breakers album Voodoo Treatment, and who plays with you on the album? Also, tell us about working with producer Craig Williams and what he brought to the sound and vision of the new Breakers album?
Jim Abrahams: We wrote it in 2019, and pretty much recorded it towards the end of 2019. The band is myself on guitar, Marc Lockett on drums and Jayson Slater on bass. We occasionally get some help from our talented friends – on this one, Chris Stavrou, who plays some stellar cello on the title track, Dan Klapman, who lays down some great sax on a couple of songs, and Matt Casey, who handles percussion in spots. Also, Bruno Kriese, who is like our utility 4th guy in the studio, plugged in on percussion and bass, periodically.
Usually, I will develop the basic riffs and song ideas, and the guys will contribute suggestions and their own parts, which are sometimes a lot different, and better, than what I originally had in mind; it is a pretty collaborative process, and the songs have ended up coming along pretty well!
Craig is fantastic. He has had a long career in the Chicago area, with his Dr. CAW Recording studio, recording the likes of Styx, Dave Mason, Michael McDermott, Harvey Mandel and others. We come into the studio with our ideas pretty much already developed, and he really helps shape up the rough edges. He both really pushes us to focus and play well, and helps round out and shape some of the final arrangements. Craig is not hesitant to provide pretty direct feedback, like, “That was pretty good – except for the whole guitar part, which sucked. Let’s do it again.” Hahaha. He most definitely contributes heavily to the creative process and final output.

Miles Davis "On The Corner" 1972

Could there be any more confrontational sound in Miles Davis' vast catalog than the distorted guitars and tinny double-timing drums reacting to a two-note bass riff funking it up on the first track from On the Corner? Before the trumpet even enters the story has been broken off in the middle -- deep street music melding with a secret language exchanged by the band and those who can actually hear it as music. Here are killer groove riffs that barely hold on as bleating trumpet and soprano sax lines (courtesy of Dave Liebman on track one) interact with John McLaughlin's distortion-box frenzy...
...Michael Henderson's bass keeps the basic so basic it hypnotizes; keyboards slowly enter the picture, a pair of them handled by Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea, as well as Ivory Williams' synthesizer. Finally, Colin Walcott jumps in with an electric sitar and there are no less than five drummers -- three kits (Al Foster, Billy Hart, and Jack DeJohnette), a tabla player, and Mtume. It's a four-tune suite, On the Corner is, but the separations hardly matter, just the shifts in groove that alter the time/space continuum. After 20 minutes, the set feels over and a form of Miles' strange lyricism returns in "Black Satin." Though a tabla kicks the tune off, there's a recognizable eight-note melody that runs throughout. Carlos Garnett and Bennie Maupin replace Liebman, Dave Creamer replaces McLaughlin, and the groove rides a bit easier -- except for those hand bells shimmering in the background off the beat just enough to make the squares crazy. The respite is short-lived, however. Davis and band move the music way over to the funk side of the street -- though the street funkers thought these cats were too weird with their stranded time signatures and modal fugues that begin and end nowhere and live for the way the riff breaks down into emptiness. "One and One" begins the new tale, so jazz breaks down and gets polished off and resurrected as a far blacker, deeper-than-blue character in the form of "Helen Butte/Mr. Freedom X," where guitars and horns careen off Henderson's cracking bass and Foster's skittering hi-hats. It may sound weird even today, but On the Corner is the most street record ever recorded by a jazz musician. And it still kicks. - Review by Thom Jurek

Eddie Noack "Psycho" - The K-Ark And Allstar Recordings 1962-1969

Eddie Noack had a rough '50s, working hard and never scoring a hit, but that's nothing compared to his '60s...
...After he was dropped by Mercury, the singer wound up drifting to Allstar, a fly-by-night Nashville indie that specialized in "song poems" -- suckers would send in lyrics and pro musicians would set them to music, for a fee -- and found space for Noack, a songwriter who had success, but a singer who had none. At Allstar, he was usually able to record his own songs, but Noack wound up chasing trends instead of setting them. Specifically, he wound up cutting several singles in the style of Buck Owens & the Buckaroos, sides that may not have charted but illustrated Noack was a pro, capable of following shifting fashions and delivering upon them ably, even appealingly. Throughout the sessions chronicled on this 24-track collection, it's always evident that Noack was a guy who knew what makes a good country song work, whether he's writing a tune or singing one, but his flat affect meant that he never quite seemed like a star; he just was another good country singer in a time filled with them. This sturdiness and all the shifting styles, also evident on his late-'60s sides for K-Ark, make this 2013 Bear Family set feel like the music coming from a forgotten jukebox, and that'd be enough to recommend it to hardcore country fans, but this is also distinguished by the first-ever version of Leon Payne's unsettling "Psycho." Written from the perspective of a serial killer -- and loosely inspired by the serial killers Ed Gein and Richard Speck -- "Psycho" was later popularized by Elvis Costello, who found it through Jack Kittel's version, but Noack's is the first and greatest, partially due to his stoicism: he sounds so nonplussed by the horror he chronicles that this flirts with being outsider art -- quite an accomplishment for a Nashville insider. "Psycho" could be called unparalleled if only Noack didn't bewilderingly cut a de facto sequel immediately afterward in the form of "Dolores," an original tune also written from the perspective of a serial killer. It's as if Noack thought "Psycho" had the possibility of being a sensation so he'd better have another tune in the same vein. Combined, these two oddities elevate Psycho into something truly special: a compelling voyage through the dark, twisty, unmapped side roads of '60s country. - Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

The Me Gustas "Benthic Exploration" 2017 + "Summer" 2018 - 7"/45rpm

This is our first "concept" album. From start to finish it takes you from that initial plunge into the sea, taking you to depths unknown and bringing you back. We had a specific idea when coming in to record this album. We really wanted to create a tense feeling with certain songs, so we purposely used a smaller Fender amp and pushed it pretty hard to have it produce that natural distortion. To us, this was a great way to symbolize the sea.

Kim Fowley "Snake Document Masquerade" 1979

Kim Fowley is less important for what he's done than what he gets away with once described as "the king of rock'n'roll pimps," Fowley is a master manipulator of artists and creator — as writer / producer / entrepreneur — of hit records that are both crassly commercial and smugly subversive.
Snake Document Masquerade (does that sound like a Captain Beefheart title or what?) is his twisted idea of a new wave concept album, a vision of '80s pop apocalypse that gets by on sheer audacity. Musically, it's a limp mélange of disco, reggae, punk-funk and electronic meditations distinguished by the spacey rap "1985: Physical Lies" (modeled on his own 1966 acid-rap hit, "The Trip") and robot sex fantasy "1988: Searchin' for a Human in Tight Blue Jeans." from trouser press by David Fricke

Satan's Pilgrims "Psychsploitation" 2009

Satan's Pilgrims, the Northwest's premiere purveyors of surf and guitar instrumentals invite you take a trip with them on the psychedelic side of things. "Psychsploitation" features 13 garage psychedelic guitar instrumentals that will blow your mind!!!
Satan's Pilgrims is a five-piece band from Portland. Formed in 1991, the band is still plugging away with its distinct retro sound. After hearing this band on Radio Free Bakersfield and the GaragePunk Surfast, I was sufficiently intrigued to contact the band about its most recent album Psychsploitation.
It doesn't take long to figure out what Satan's Pilgrims is all about. Psychsploitation opens with the song "Dilation." This is a song that is all about the psychedelic sound. If you heard the song without knowing who recorded it, you'd probably guess that it was recorded at least 40 years ago.
And that's just the beginning. The band adeptly manages to keep one foot firmly in the world of psychedelia and surf. "Wylde Times" is a song that leans more toward surf while "Kaleidoscope," "Colours of Your Mind" (and several others) are exclusively in the realm of psychedelia. You'll hear a lot of organ, a lot of reverb, and almost no lyrics. And then there is "Psych-A-Go-Go (Psych Out!)" If you're not wearing go-go boots, or some kind of dancing shoes when this comes on, you'll want to put them on and get moving. The album closes with "10,000 Mirrors," a fuzzadelic masterpiece. You don't so much listen to this song as let it surround you. The sound seems to come from everywhere. Sit back and let the goodness engulf you.
The cover of the album promises "mind-expanding sounds." I'm not going to disagree with that. This is not a band whose members repeatedly play the same three chords as loud as they can in an attempt to fool people into thinking that they are good. This is not a band that employs the standard verse-chorus-verse format. It is quite simply a band of five very talented musicians who play a brand of music that you won't hear very frequently. The Breakers "A Date With Destiny" 2020 + "Vodka Sonic" (Techno Tonic) Remixes 2020 - 12"/45rpm EP

The Breakers formed in 2018 at an open mic in the Chicago Area when guitarist Jim Abrahams walked in with a list of classic surf instrumental covers and free-form instrumentals that he wanted to play, a Stratocaster and a Digitech drum pedal, into which he had preprogrammed the songs. He quickly met up with drummer Marc Lockett, who was running the weekly open mic, and bassist Jayson Slater. The three decided to play the songs together, the drum machine never came out of the box, and the band was born...
...The band began playing and, with local friends pitching in here and there, recording in the Chicago area. In early 2020, The Breakers released a new CD in 2020 entitled Voodoo Treatment. An excellent follow-up to the band’s 2019 album, Transmissions From A Hornet-Free Environment, the 40-minute, 14-track Voodoo Treatment exemplifies the band’s adventurous, surf-based instrumental approach. Standout tracks include the title track, “Voodoo Treatment”, the heart-pounding “Astral Valley”, and “Wave Train”.
Following early 2020’s, Voodoo Treatment, and with limited opportunities to play live due to the Covid – 19 protocols, the band focused on other projects. After coordinating a charity compilation the Illinois Covid Response Fund featuring other locally – based instrumental acts, Chicago Surf Rally, the band recorded an end – of year EP, A Date With Destiny.
The 7-track, 23-minute long collection continues the band’s penchant for enjoying the finer accouterments of life, including delicately-flavored chocolates, fine champagnes from the northeast of France, and the intricately – crafted items from the local haberdashery. A delivery of most interesting surf-based sonics, highlights include the relaxed sounds of the title track, the raging Po’ino, and a take on Bedrich Smetana’s The Moldau. Now in early 2021, The Breakers are poised for more sonic greatness with their new EP, A Date With Destiny.

...I saw her twice. First in a pub-rock concert in the outskirts of London, while on a biz-trip to Pub-Rock-City. She was backed by the old troopers of Brinsley Schwarz, meanwhile with the label "Rumour". Ragged miniskirt, cowboy boots and one of the sunniest smiles I've ever seen. Who wouln't love her. Second time in a club in Hamburg, Germany backed by a bunch in the style of the Mavericks.

...Anyway, Don Beebe is saying, over a loudspeaker, "I hate to break up that dancing, but let's have a little drag racing."...
...He has a phonograph hooked up to the loudspeaker, and he puts on a record, produced by Riverside Rec., of Drag-strip sounds, mainly dragsters blasting off and squealing from the starting line. Well, he doesn'treally break up the dancing, but a hundred kids come over, when they hear the drag-strip sounds, to where Beebe has a slot racing stand. Beebe takes a microphone and announces that Dick Dale, the singer, is here, and anybodywho will race Dick at the slot-racing stand will get one of his records. Dick Dale is pretty popular among the kids out here because he sings a lot of "surfing" songs. The sufers - surfboard riders - are a cult much admired by all the kids. They have their own argot, with adjectives like "hang ten", meaning the best there is. They also go in for one particular brand of customizing: they take old wood-bodied station wagons, which they call "woodies" and fix them up for riding, sleeping and haulingsurfing equipment for their weekends at the beach. The surfers also get a hell of a bang out of slot racing for some reason, so with Dick Dale slot racing at the Teen Fair, you have about three areas of the arcane teen world all rolled into one... Taking their name from the 60's B-film of Satan's Sadists, the line up of Dave Pilgrim (guitar/ keyboards) Bobby Pilgrim (guitar), John Pilgrim (bass), Scott Pilgrim (guitar) and Ted Pilgrim (drums) got together in 1992 under the moniker of Satan's Pilgrams. With their matching vampire capes and nostalgia of lo-fi 60's surf, Empty Records debuted the quintets first full-length in 1995 with At Home With Satan's Pilgrams, followed by Soul Pilgrims that same year. Being compared to the Northwestern legends of The Ventures, The Sonics, The Wailers and the Kingsmen, the band continued their relationship with Empty as they released Around The World With... in 1997, while putting out Creature Feature on Estrus Records the following year. Kim Fowley is superman, and I will never believe otherwise. this record is a serious boatload of amazing psychotic drugbabble. it's completely insane, musically and lyrically. "teenage death girl" is my favorite song on here. if you like to take drugs and listen to weirdo music, I promise that this record will satisfy all your desires.
