Tempest - Live in Sweden 1973

Back From The Dead as requested...

Tempest - Live in Sweden 1973
FM Source @320 & Flac

Formed by drummer Jon Hiseman in 1974 after the break up of COLOSSEUM, TEMPEST (no relation to the US band of the same name) are most notable for their line up rather than their albums. Hiseman brought in an at the time very young guitarist by the name of Allan Holdsworth, with Mark Clark (bass) and Paul Williams (vocals) completing the band. Clark had also been a member of COLOSSEUM. Paul Williams had played with JOHN MAYALL'S BLUESBREAKERS and JUICY LUCY.

TEMPEST released two albums with Peter "Ollie" Halsall (PATTO, SCAFFOLD) replacing Holdsworth for "Living in Fear", and taking on keyboard duties for that album too. He replaced the departed Williams on vocals, resulting in a completely different sound for that album. Their music is more jazz rock than fusion, and Hiseman's COLOSSEUM influences can be heard in the jazz influences in both albums. While "Living in Fear" was more direct and dynamic than the first self titled album, neither was particularly satisfactory.

Hiseman went on to form COLOSSEUM II, while Holdsworth found varying degrees of success both as a solo artists, and with bands such as GONG, SOFT MACHINE, UK and BRUFORD. The late Ollie Halsall (died 29 May 1992) recorded with BOXER and Kevin Ayers among others. Clarke worked with various bands including NATURAL GAS, URIAH HEEP, MOUNTAIN AND RAINBOW.

Brought to you by the Collective For Live Music
Includes the cue and promo sheets.

The cue sheet says this was recorded in "upstate New York." Bill Minkin just says "live in New York."  At the start of "Ready To Rock" the singer says "it's New York, the rock capital of the U.S.A." That's something you say in New York City, not in Albany, so I suspected the "upstate New York" claim might be wrong.

Concert Vault lists a show from New York City, January 7, 1985.  Concert Vault does not name a venue.  I've compared the tracks and it's the same concert. That gives us a city and a date.
Setlist.fm has the venue as the Palladium.

I was unable to find proof confirming this, such as a ticket, poster, print ad, or concert review, but for now, it's the best we can do.

Simon & Garfunkel - First Tour In Japan, Osaka Stadium May 8th 1982

Simon & Garfunkel - First Time In Japan

By 1980, the solo careers of Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel were not doing well, and simultaneously, to help alleviate New York's economic decline, concert promoter Ron Delsener suggested a free concert in Central Park. Delsener contacted Simon with the idea of a Simon & Garfunkel reunion, and once Garfunkel had agreed, plans were drawn up. The concert, held on September 19, 1981 attracted more than 500,000 people, at that time the largest ever pop show attendance. Warner Brothers Records released a live album of the show, The Concert in Central Park, which went double platinum in the US. The event created a renewed interest in Simon & Garfunkel's work, and following a number of heart-to-heart talks attempting to put their disagreements behind them, the duo undertook a world tour beginning in May 1982. • During this time the pair played in Japan for the first time ever. Performing 5 shows in the country - 3 in Tokyo and 2 in Osaka - between the 5th and 12th of May ’82, the concerts attracted massive crowds and the pair’s gig at Osaka Stadium on 5th was recorded and broadcast live across the nation.

So retro that it is actually cool! Rain Dance Live is an amazing concert recording by a bunch of veteran blues rockers led by legendary keyboardist / vocalist / producer Gregg Rolie. Rolie was a long time member of Carlos Santana’s band and a founding member of Journey (as well as founder of bands The Storm and Abraxas Pool). Gregg and band recorded this album while on tour in 2007. After giving this a listen it is obvious why Rolie was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. Fans of Carlos Santana or Stevie Ray Vaughn won’t want to miss this one.

Our pal Sam Eliot's Mustache found this audio on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q1mZCtJZJWI&t=1849s

He recorded the streaming audio, burned it as WAV files and sent it to me to chapter.

I chaptered it but also took the time to remove several hundred bits of (what I think is...) radio static.  I didn't get everything but it's improved over the streaming audio.

I want to note that while this is "flac files of wavs" it is most likely "lossy" - streaming audio is usually not CD quality audio.  I lack the expertise to analyze the stream (I could figure it out but I have to go to work in an hour...).  Saving as a wav allows us to burn CD-rs so it makes sense and compressing them as flac to save space is also smart. I just want to call out that this is not a direct transfer from a reel source.

The gang felt that this was an historically important show; the start of the rise of syndicated live concerts distributed nationally. This outweighs the fact we didn't record this ourselves and can't verify the source.

It sounds very good; there's virtually no hiss that I can hear.  Some "hum" that's probably 60 Hz and the 120, 180, etc. harmonics...which could be stage amps and monitors.  Whatever this is, it's really good quality and a great historical document of a vintage radio broadcast.

My guess is this is recorded off-the-air from WNEW in New York. The other announcer (not Bill Minkin) is a female disk jockey; she's inserting intro and outro remarks, and a WNEW-FM station identification.  The commercials are for Newmark & Lewis, which the internet tells me was based in the New York area (mainly Long Island).  I note that the vocal talent on these commercials have a regional New York accent that stands out to my West Coast California accent ears.

The YouTube channel has a print ad for the show as a graphic; I haven't been able track a high-resolution
copy of this down yet.  Does anyone have access to Rolling Stone magazine archives?

One really weird thing about this show was Springsteen's choice of song. His debut album was released six weeks prior on January 5, 1973.  Now... if your first album was out there, and you had a national performance platform, what would you do?  Well, I'd pick my single "Blinded By The Light" and play the friggin' heck out of it.  What I wouldn't do is pick a song that wasn't on the album...and wasn't on ANY album for the next 25 years (it finally turned up on 1998's "Tracks.)"  But that's what he did.

Another weird thing about the past:  High profile rock bands played high schools.  Blood Sweat & Tears are playing a high school here.  The Kinks played at my high school (Ygnacio Valley High School, Concord, CA) in the summer of 1970.  Miles Davis played at our cross-town rival, Las Lomas High School. Santana played there, too.

----------
Also... I "asked the Internet" and got a Bing Copilot response that I cut and pasted into a jpg in the artwork file.

It says, "the show was special as it marked the reunion of the band after lead vocalist David Clayton-Thomas rejoined the group."

I didn't hear Clayton-Thomas's distinctive vocals on this at all.  He's not there, and Concert Vault says it's Jerry Fisher.

This is just wrong.

And in point of fact, they do NOT play "Hi De Ho (That Old Sweet Roll)," "Spinning Wheel," "Lucretia McEvil," or "You've Made Me So Very Happy."

This is our future: we ask the Internet, and it gives us incorrect information.

Đ®åⒻṬëŕṽøï says, "Please do not believe everything you read on the internet, including this sentence."

The download was corrected Thursday November 20, 2025 to include the name of the WNEW announcer, Alison Steele, "the Nightbird."

Paul Simon – Live N' Late In The Evening - Tower Theater, Upper Darby Philadelphia, PA. October 7th 1980

Paul Simon – Live N' Late In The Evening

Tower Theater Upper Darby Philadelphia, PA.

October 7th 1980

Liberated Bootleg

1. Me and Julio Down in Down By The Schoolyard  2. Still Crazy After All These Years  3. Ace In The Hole  4. Something So Right  5. One Trick Pony  6. Jonah  7. Fifty Ways To Leave Your Lover  8. Late In The Evening  9. American Tune  10. The Boxer  11. The Sound of Silence

Bass – Tony Levin

Drums – Steve Gadd

Guitar – Eric Gale

Guitar, Vocals – Paul Simon

Keyboards, Vocals – Richard Tee

Paul Simon has had many creative periods during his long illustrious career. During the mid-70's he started playing with some of the best jazz/funk musicians New York had to offer. His "One Trick Pony", album as depicted in the movie of the same name, showcased his new funk/jazz band. Steve Gadd on drums, Richard Tee on Keyboards, and Eric Gale on guitar were members of the popular funk/jazz group Stuff. Add Tony Levin on bass, and you have something of a New York super session group backing Simon. This cd is basically "One Trick Pony" live, featuring songs from the album such as "Ace in The Hole", featuring Richard Tee sharing vocals with Simon. It's a rollicking thumper and may be the highlight of the concert. Other standouts are "One Trick Pony", and of course "Late in The Evening". Simon adds fan favorites like "Me & Julio Down by The School Yard", "The Boxer", "Still Crazy", and a live funky version of "50 Ways To Leave Your Lover", which nearly eclipses the version on Simon & Garfunkel "Live in Central Park". Richard Tee's unmistakable fender rhodes sound is prevalent throughout, and Eric Gale shows why he is considered the grand champion of progressive jazz guitar.

Brought to you by the Collective For Live Music.

Flac files of wavs, includes 300 dpi scans of the cues and disc labels. This version November 1st, 2025.

This show is the first King Biscuit Flower Hour branded as a "Superbiscuit." It's 90 minutes instead of the usual 60 minutes.  There were shows longer than 60 minutes prior to this but none carried the "Superbiscuit" designation. In the July 1986 edition of Broadcasting, it's mentioned there were six Superbiscuits planned.

Bill Minkin calls the show a "composite concert," which means they patched together parts of two Who concerts from 1973 and 1982 with 1985 tracks from Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend's Deep End. They've also edited in interviews with Roger Daltrey, John Entwistle, Pete Townshend, and Keith Moon (who had been dead for over seven and a half years at the time of the broadcast).

The usual King Biscuit runout grooves have the letters "KB" for a regular show or BOB (for a Best of the Biscuit) followed by ascending number.  The Super Biscuit does not follow this style...so the show the prior week was #622, and the following week was #623.  The Super Biscuit was marked as SB-1. There were additional 90 minute Super Biscuits by Judas Priest and GTR in 1986.  After that, it's all 60 minute shows, so the six Superbiscuits per year did not happen.
The official cola of the teenage wasteland.

In "Who Are You," King Biscuit censors two f-words by reversing just the offending word ("backmasking"). As I've done before, I produced an uncensored version by reversing the reversed portions and restoring the f-words.  The uncensored version is exactly the same time as the original censored version so it can be seamlessly swapped in as a replacement.  Đ®åⒻṬëŕṽøï advises you to clear the room of children before playing the uncensored version.

At 3:42 in "Won't Get Fooled Again," the stereo sound merges into mono until about 4:18, when it expands back out into stereo.  The version on Concert Vault says their version is 11:06. The Superbiscuit track must be edited as it's only 9:55.

Some of the interviews are mixed over the music.  I've chosen to place the edit points so that you can cut most of them out.  However, a Pete Townsend interview is dropped on top of the last third of Under A Raging Moon, so I've left that one as-is.

I also tossed in some press coverage to keep you reading actual journalism instead of AI-generated glibbity-gloop. The Toronto concert was the first time the Who did a farewell forever tour.  The Toronto Star put together as special newspaper section dedicated to the Who, with full page pictures, biographies, and best of all, WHO THEMED ADVERTISING.

I was unable to confirm the commonly attributed date of April 10, 1983 for this show. That date is on Discogs, Setlist.fm, and Concert Archives. I could not find independent confirmation from a primary source such as a newspaper ad or review.  I did find a ticket...but it was ripped in half and you can only make out "83-Sun-7:30 PM"

That's a partial confirmation, as April 10th was a Sunday.

There's also a copy of this attributed to May 23, 1983, which is (once again) the common error mixing up the syndicated broadcast date with the recording date.

We're still trying to track down the name of the band (or artist) on #19.  Who is the mystery Budweiser singer?

UPDATE:  I thought I'd run a search for the Pat Travers portion of the show....and found this...which confirms the April 10th date:  Pat Travers – Going Down To Jacksonville - 1983 – CD (), 2025 [r33770505] | Discogs

McJohn was let go after suffering drug troubles and the remaining trio toured Australia in October 1982 billed as Small Faces to entice patrons. In January 1983 Leverton ran into trouble at U.S. Immigration and was deported back to England.

Stevie Ray Vaughn - Rough Edges

*THANKS TO DAVE
Ok folks for my next two posts (You'll have to look for the other post) I'm giving you some early SRV. This disc along with the other I'm posting, called "In The Open" were lent to me by a friend of mine. He let me borrow a bunch of discs. When you find "In The Open" I will let you know what those discs are. I will tell you there a bunch of Stones things, A Neil Young and a Ronnie Wood disc. I'm pretty sure most of it is posted on numerous other sites. So what I will do is list the titles and you'll have to let me know if you want them posted or not.

Roseanne Cash "Roseanne Cash Live In Cincinnatti"

Yes, "Cincinnatti."  That's the spelling on all three disc labels, the commercial spot affidavit, and the cue sheet.

When I bought this, I thought it was part of Starfleet Blair's Jamboree U.S.A. series. The Jamboree U.S.A. shows are very rare; I've only seen a few turn up on Ebay over the last twenty years.  I've identified 14 shows, and there may be more, but only two show up on Discogs: Janie Frickie and Razzy Bailey. I've included a text file with a list of Starfleet Blair's Jamboree U.S.A. shows sourced from information in Billboard, Cashbox, and Discogs.

I don't believe the Roseanne Cash show was part of that series, in spite of using the same cover. I note that the same cover was used for Pretenders Live At The Santa Monica Civic, and that was a Warner Brothers Music Show.  The cover alone isn't enough to prove that's it's a Jamboree U.S.A. show.

There are other details that don't match. Both the Janie Frickie and Razzy Bailey shows are recorded at the Capitol Music Hall, Wheeling, WV.  The Roseanne Cash show is from Bogarts in Cincinnati, OH.

The Jamboree shows have a yellow sticker on the cover displaying "Razzy Bailey Jamboree U.S.A." and "Janie Frickie Jamboree U.S.A."  The Roseanne Cash show has a silver sticker that says,
"Stroh's and Starfleet Present Roseanne Cash."

The Cash show's Air date of August 3 - August 9, 1981, is a longer window than that listed in Billboard for the Jamboree U.S.A shows; seven days as compared to three days. This window overlaps with the air dates of the Jamboree U.S.A. Johnny Cash show (July 31 - August 2) and Johnny Russell (August 7 - 9).

As for the music, this one's a goldmine.  At the time, "Oh, Yes I Can" was unreleased, turning up on 1982's Somewhere In The Stars.  Crowell's "Seeing Is Believing" wasn't available, and had to wait until 1984's Right Or Wrong before you could buy it.  As far as I can tell, her cover of her father's "Big River" is unreleased to this day, and I don't see a release of what I believe is titled "What Kind Of Girl Am I Really Am."
