This one is a Version "A" concert, which means that somewhere out there exists a Version "B" with a different set of commercials.

Speaking of commercials, besides the usual suspects (Lee Jeans, Certs, U.S. Navy...) we have RockBill magazine. 

The July 7, 1982 New York Times said, "... RockBill magazine, a Playbill-size publication, that was given out free in 70 ''showcase'' nightclubs that have live rock music entertainment. In addition to giving away 500,000 copies of RockBill at the clubs, subscriptions will be sold for it on commercials that will appear on MTV, the music television cable network, as part of a trade-off deal that will get the network not only pages of advertising but also program listings in the magazine in exchange. The magazine will only carry full, four-color bleed ads at $19,500 each."

I've included the cover of the magazine from August 1984, the month this show was broadcast.  Did any of you ever read RockBill?

Also in the Artwork folder are ads for the show, confirming the recording date of May 28, 1984.  I've got a review from the wrong Odeon, this one is in Birmingham. I couldn't find one for London, so this is better than nothing. England appears to be full of Odeons.  Here in the U.S. of A. we've got slathers of Fox, Greek, and Paramount Theaters.  Or "theatres," we can't figure out which spelling we prefer.

As usual, there is a BBC Transcription Services version of this (In Concert 335, CN 4429/S) that has two additional songs ("Sister Europe," "Into You Like A Train") These transcription discs sell for ridiculously high prices; there's someone asking £1,000.00 +£27.00 shipping for an XTC show over on Discogs at the time of this writing.

And yeah, they don't mention the date this show was recorded. Here at the Voodoo Wagon Secret Headquarters, we dispatched a team of special investigators to get to the bottom of this mystery.

The first release of this concert was on BBC Transcription Service BBC In Concert 291, which has two additional songs (President Gas, Sleep Comes Down).  The Discogs listing for that bit of rare vinyl gives the date as October 10, 1982. Sounds good, but you know that just reading something on the Internet doesn't make it true.

So, it was over to newpapers.com to find actual proof that confirms that date, and we found it in the Westminster and Pimlico News of October 1, 1982. 

There's also a review of the concert. Critic Mary Harron did not enjoy the show.  The Internet tells me Ms. Harron dated Tony Blair and directed American Psycho.

On Track 06, the song is introduced as "Angels" and it's listed with that title on the cue sheet, but the lyrics match the song "Only You and I."  I'm no Psych-Furs expert, but if you've got a Ph.D in post-punk please drop a comment below.  What's the correct title?

This is sourced from a Maxell high bias tape with a custom Starfleet / Blair label stuck on Side A. 

 There's no label on Side B even though there's music recorded there, too.

The Starfleet side of the / was founded by Sam Kopper in 1978.  The Blair side of the / was John Blair & Company, an advertising, communications and printing conglomerate founded in 1935

Kopper got his start in 1968 at Boston's WBCN and had carved out a niche as the guy who did the live broadcasts.  He branched out into broadcasts for other radio stations in the northeast, working out of a bus set up as mobile recording/broadcast studio. Starfleet started small with landline hookups but everything changed with the advent of satellite connections.

I've included a four page article from the July 18, 1981 issue of Billboard that goes into great detail about both Starfleet / Blair and the technical details of landline and satellite broadcasts.

In 1982 Starfleet began to work with NBC's The Source radio network and in 1983, bought themselves out of the partnership with John Blair & Company.  They were bought out by Westwood One in 1985,  and the mobile recording bus had been sold to American radio network Westwood One and became one of several Westwood One Mobile Trucks, named Concertmaster III, with Kopper becoming Westwood One's East Coast Director of Special Projects.

One thing that's interesting about this is the stage introduction was done by WBCN's Carter Allen but broadcast was carried on WZBC and WERS, two college stations in the Boston metro.

WERS (88.9 FM) is one of Emerson College's two radio stations (the other being campus station WECB), located in Boston, Massachusetts, United States."

I was fortunate enough to catch the first wave of punk when it hit. Never got to see the Sex Pistols but was lucky enough to meet and see (yes I did get their autographs) The Ramones (the originals) and there was a time when a local bar here was bringing in some of the first wavers. I managed to get Stiv Bators autograph. So these guys were considered "New Wave" but me and some friends always loved these guys. I thought having a sax player in the band was a great idea. So this here post is The Furs doing songs for Radio One.Of course you know the quality of this has got to be great. And I think The Boss is also a big fan of these guys. Sorry no covers for this.
