This was a "Live From The Archives - The Show" rebroadcast and
looks like it's been edited down from a longer original broadcast.

I left the ad for our local basketball team in, because I like it.

Plus... while it's the wrong sport, it allows me to point out that I'm about to pitch a double-header in your direction, so make sure you've got your batting helmet on!  Coming up later today is ANOTHER Bruce Hornsby show, also from Yoshi's (you gotta play the same ballpark for it to be a double-header...).

Another in our ongoing series of KFOG tapes from down in my basement.  Digitizeed from my master copy of the broadcast, recorded on high-bias tape.  I can't check if it was Maxell or TDK, as the basement is now two blocks away (we moved to a new apartment but kept the storage...)  But it was either TDK SA or Maxell XL-IIS, those were my "go to" tapes for live broadcasts.

This digitization was updated May 2021 with better tagging: Album, Year, Comment, Disc Number, Album Artist, and Composer have been added.  FLAC files from .wavs.

And yes, I let the "KFOG Outro" go on for the full three minutes of d.j. chatter.  I used to cut that stuff off, now I think it's a part of history.  Never thought I'd miss John Grappone's voice....but I do.

Cowboy Junkies / The Plant, Sausalito, CA August 18, 1998 KFOG-FM

....and here's part two of our double-header.  Just like in baseball, it's the same bunch of people doing almost exactly the same thing, in the exact same place, only later.  If you can sit through eight hours of baseball in the hot August sun eating hot dogs and drinking Budweiser, you can make it through another set of the Cowboy Junkies live from the Plant.

Once again, from my master copy recorded off the radio....it's the Cowboy Junkies!

Cowboy Junkies / The Plant, Sausalito, CA Jan. 30, 1994 KFOG-FM

Last year, KFOG-FM changed their call letters, dropped the rock music, and became an all-sports channel just in time for NO SPORTS due to the COVID-19 epidemic.

So...it's time for a DOUBLE-HEADER.

I don't know if they do this in other sports, but baseball has the tradition of occasionally playing TWO games in the same afternoon.  If a thing is worth doing, it's worth over-doing, I always say.

So here's a Cowboy Junkies double-header.  First up, recorded directly from my master copy recorded off KFOG is a 1994 broadcast from the Plant across the Golden Gate Bridge in Sausalito.  If you've downloaded these shows before, you know the format:  recorded in the famous Plant Studio in Sausalito (in business from 1972 to 2008) in front of a small audience of "Fogheads," and interspersed with short interviews or questions from the disk jockeys.

Excellent sound.  And yes, the guitar lick in "Anniversary Song" is the same lick as in Clarence Carter's "Slip Away."

We have some Sonny Landreth down in our archives....but here's a new one.  Well, a 25 year old new one, digitized from my master copy I recorded off the broadcast.  It's the typical KFOG "in-studio" show from the Plant studios over in Marin County:  deejay introduction, and the music interspersed with short interviews.  Only five songs, but they all sound as crisp and clear as the day this was broadcast back in 1995.

08. Sugar Coated Love

So...in all of my WAH WAH WAH crybaby mourning over the loss of a radio station that (quite frankly) I haven't listened to in several years, I realized I had a handful of shows that I'd never posted here on the Ol' Wagon.  As usual, this one is digitized right from a high-bias master cassette that I recorded the night of the event, so you're getting GREAT sound quality.

This is the Fab T-Birds at the height of their powers, with an added bonus of Carlos Santana showing up to throw in a solo on one song.  To my taste...it's a rather PERFUNCTORY solo, it doesn't sound like they had a rehearsal...but it's a unique radio event...which is why we loved us KFOG, back in the day.

2021:  I retagged with corrected titles, added the KFOG logo as the image, and added the composers to the meta-tags.

KFOG-FM is being folded into local AM station KNBR, and will stop broadcasting "Adult Album Alternative" and turn into a "Sports Talk" radio station later this week.  KFOG had a good run: 37 years.  In the late 80s and 90s, they made a solid commitment to broadcasting live shows from the Warfield and Fillmore, and "in-studio" shows" from The Plant studios on the other side of the Bay in Sausalito.  While to my tastes, the programming was a little bit too focused and mainstream, I also understood they were running a business and trying to attract a specific demographic.  They did a good job.  I was 26 when they began broadcasting; now I'm 63.  It's hard to ride through time as your audience ages.

Here's a live broadcast from KFOG I recorded in 1994.

Our pal Anonymous pointed that that I had the wrong date listed on this, and sure enough, Anonymous was RIGHT.  So I retagged the files, renamed the folder, and updated the text file:

unknown generation

01. Wrote It Down And Burned It
02. Ethylene
03. Graduated
04. Shredding The Document
05. Perfectly Good Guitar
06. Walk On
07. Interview, plus "Sly and the Family Queens" riff
08. Only The Song Survives
09. Cry Love
10. Your Love Is My Rest
11. Drive South
12. I Wanna Be Sedated

I have a cassette of the original live broadcast.  The original transmission of the show dropped the feed from the Plant several times; KFOG covered by shifting to their usual playlist, and going back to the Plant when the link was recovered.  The original broadcast did NOT include the encore of the cover of the Ramones "I Wanna Be Sedated."  I never digitized my original tape because it dropped the broadcast...but even if it was complete, it would have missed the WONDERFUL cover of the Ramones "I Wanna Be Sedated."

This is NOT sourced from one of my master tapes.  As the show includes the (originally unbroadcast) encore, this likely comes from a later rebroadcast of the show.  Given that the original broadcast was marred by repeated drops of the live feed, it's not surprising KFOG rebroadcast the show.  While I don't know the generation, this is an excellent recording, and I recommend it to you.

Requiem For KFOG-FM

After years of being an easy listening station, KFOG-FM, converted to a rock format in 1982.  At first, they were just one of many formatted stations in the Bay Area, but by the late 80s, they made a grab for the brass ring; they wanted to be heir to the legacy of KSAN-FM, one of the first "free formatted" stations launched in the late 1960s.  While KFOG had a playlist, they made a regular commitment to broadcasting live concerts from local venues, plus "studio shows with a small audience," usually recorded at The Plant, in Sausalito (and later on at Fantasy Studios,  in Berkeley).  KFOG pioneered the "Adult Album Alternative" format.

Their on-air personalities, Morey, M. Dung, and Rosalie, became part of the local rock landscape, and their broadcasts of the Bay Area Music Awards featured jams you never would have expected, such as Metallica's Kirk Hammett jamming with Carlos Santana.

KFOG also put out an annual "Live From The Archives" CD, starting in mid-90s, with tracks from their various live broadcasts in the preceding year.  Early volumes of this are highly collectible, selling for stupid-money on EBay.

All that comes to an end this September, when KFOG-FM will be folded into KNBR, and became a "sports talk" station, becoming KNBR-FM 104.5.

They had a good run; times change.

So...let's raise a glass of whatever we're drinking to one of the GREAT SOURCES OF QUALITY LIVE MUSIC recordings over the last four decades; it is not likely we will see their equal again.

Here on Voodoo Wagon,  we have the following KFOG shows,  sourced from my master cassette tapes.  I usually used a high bias tape, so most of these sound great...
I think all of these links are still "live," if not, please let me know.  KFOG: requiescat in pace.

Elvis Costello - Aging Gracefully - Fillmore Auditorium, SF CA May 15, 1996

Okay, gang, it seems like computer issues are contagious these days.  I've got a bad input jack on my sound card, so that's putting a crimp in digitizing vinyl.  I'm switching to a USB input but that will have to wait until the next paycheck.

In the meanwhile, we can't let this place go to pot, so it's time to dive into some European copyright gap CDs from the 1990s, and see if there's some interest in these shows....

To start, here's AGING GRACEFULLY, sourced from a KFOG-FM radio broadcast on May 15, 1996 from San Francisco's famous Fillmore Auditorium.

You can find the track list over at DISCOGS: https://www.discogs.com/Elvis-Costello-Aging-Gracefully/release/6902450

This is a flac version with 300 dpi scans of the covers and discs.

15th Annual Bammies/SF Civic Auditorium, SF Ca. March 7, 1992 KFOG-FM

Okay, here's another tape from down in the basement...some of this is off of a "master" of the broadcast but based on tape hiss, I think I edited some of it down to save room.  Weird set...how often will you find Ted Nugent butting up against hip-hop?  There are SEVERAL songs I can't identify, if you know the names, please leave a comment and I'll update the files and set list.

Fans of a particular group may want to break this up into smaller sets...the Steve Miller set is pretty good.
