"Unplug It In" is an acoustic EP by Eddie Money, released in 1992. Recorded at Back Alley, Houston, TX on may 14, 1992; The Backroom, Austin, TX on may 15, 1992. Eddie Money was one of the first rockers to make an attempt to capitalize on MTV's successful Unplugged series. Like any "unplugged" recording, the album features a collection of the rocker's biggest hits performed acoustically.

Which said review was generally positive, noting he "put out 100 percent" with his "unique, if limited voice."

I never saw a show at the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium.  Here's a picture of what it looked like when it was built in 1940.

Mr. Money appeared three times on NBC's The Source syndicated radio show with two concerts.  The first broadcast was in April 10-11-12, 1981, from Atlanta (that's in our vast Voodoo Archives).  The second was this show (Santa Cruz), which was repeated in December 1982 with different commercials and announcements.

Includes the discovery of print ad placed in the San Bernadino County Sun by KCAL-FM 96.7 "The Rock Spectrum."  This is a rare find.  The print ads I've been including come from music magazines, such as Billboard, Cashbox, and Radio and Records. These ads are aimed at industry professionals. This is an ad placed to reach the rock radio listeners through a local newspaper.

That's unusual. Radio stations often took advantage of the free listings in a radio column rounding up a day or a week of programming.  In general, they did not pay a newspaper to promote the shows unless there was some promotional tie-in (album giveaways, the band signing albums at a record store).  And if they did that, it was an ad produced by the station, not an ad from the syndicated show like this one.  

Radio stations and newspapers are competitors for the same local and national advertisers and usually didn't promote their products by paying a competitor to run a commercial. 

There's also a snippy entertainment column mention in the Atlanta Journal dismissing the show as "Once hot Eddie Money is booked at the Agora Ballroom on Oct. 2," like Eddie was Friday's delicious pizza now sitting soggy on the kitchen counter the following Monday morning. Money's two singles in 1980 ("Let's Be Lovers Again" and "Running Back") scraped into the Billboard Hot 100 at 86 and 91, but with the advantage of my 20/20 hindsight, Money had a turnaround later in the decade with the #5 "Take Me Home Tonight."  

I got your "once hot" right here, Atlanta Journal. The Source thought the show was good enough for a national syndication.

Rocktourdatabase.com says that Eddie Money played at the Orange Pavilion on December 18, 1982.

The cue sheet does not have a "week of...." broadcast date, but the show was likely broadcast between January and April of 1983...so it's very likely the Dec. 18 date is the source of this show.

The numbering scheme on the Captured Live! records combined "CL" (for Captured Live!") with an ascending show number and the last two digits of the year to produce a unique identifying number.  For 1983, the shows are numbered CL-183, CL-283, CL-383, etc. As the Randy Meisner Captured Live show was broadcast May 9, 1983 and was numbered CL 483, this show (CL 283) must precede it. (The Meisner show is in our archives...).

The Orange Pavilion looks like a giant Quonset hut.  Has any of our audience been to a show there?  If so, was/is it a good venue?

There appear to be two versions of this Eddie Money show.  This version is from a 3 LP 5-sided version (the sixth side is blank).  I've seen Internet listings for a 2 LP version.  The 2-LP version is missing "Back To New York," and "My Friends, My Friends," but adds the track "I Think I'm In Love" (not included here).

I can't find "Back To New York" in Money's discography.  Does anyone know what album that was on?  There's also a cover of the Dovells' version of "You Can't Sit Down" that I don't think has ever appeared on an official release.

In other notes, this show was produced by Patrick Griffith, who also produced shows for CBS Radio's "On Stage Tonight" series, and the ABC Radio Networks "A Night On The Road" series.  Mr. Griffith went on to win an Emmy in 1998 for his sound work on the National Geographic documentary "Rat."

Selections From The 16th Annual Bammies March 7, 1992

The Bammies were an annual Bay Area music awards show, founded by BAM Magazine publisher Dennis Erokan.  While the print magazine is long gone, there's an online version at http://bammagazine.com/

As with most award shows, there was a LOT of talking and not much performance.  I edited this one hour of music down from three 100 minute cassette tapes (recorded on both sides).  I edited the tracks as close to the start of the music as possible to cut out the blather.  There's two places where the deejay talks right over the start of the song, unfortunately.

Highlights of this show include Gregg Allman doing what I believe to be an unreleased song ("Turn Nothing Back Into Something"), and Kirk Hammett of Metallica jamming with Carlos Santana.
