Luscious Jackson's debut EP may be brief--seven songs packed into 24 minutes--but it has plenty to offer thematically as well as sonically. With its low-key, hip-hop grooves and dense, sound-collage production (check that clarinet riff on "Life of Leisure"), the Luscious ladies offer varied perspectives on the New York boho lifestyle. Three of the songs hail from the demo recording that landed the group their recording deal, while four others were recorded specifically for the project. All of them offer engaging, funky fun. As to whether or not the group ever found Manny, though, you'd have to presume they did--the disc was named for a boyfriend of guitarist Gabby Glaser's mother.

Luscious Jackson was a chill all-female band in the '90s that blended "alternative" rock with smooth hip hop and a love for different genres. Founding members Jill Cunniff and Kate Schellenbach met when Kate was drumming for the Beastie Boys and Jill went to interview her for a fanzine. Things clicked, a mutual appreciation grew, and Luscious Jackson was born. They named their nascent band after a basketball player from the Philly 76ers (like all the best bands do).

Their eclectic 1996 album Fever In, Fever Out was produced by Daniel Lanois and produced the semi hit "Naked Eye". Electric Honey (1999) was a bit more upbeat, but every bit as wonderful and varied. The band broke up in 2000. Instead of underground NYC clubs and late-night jam sessions, the ladies of Luscious Jackson are hip mamas now, PTA members and carpool drivers making music for children.
