By the time of this show, Westwood One split its In Concert show into "In Concert" and "In Concert: New Rock." This was in response the split of the rock radio audience into "Classic Rock" and "Indie/Alternative" audience segments. Westwood One kept the same numbering system for both shows, which means there is also an In Concert 93-42 featuring Meatloaf / Joe Satriani.
Putting artists in one genre or another didn't always make sense, and the station's target audiences didn't always line up, either. Here in the Bay Area, KFOG aimed more at the older demographic than rival Live 105 but both stations played artists like 10,000 Maniacs, Spin Doctors, and Counting Crows... all of which were on In Concert: New Rock shows. It's a testament to David Bowie's ability to stay relevant that he appeared on the both shows.
But in general, you can look at the artist(s) and know if it's a "New Rock" show. Allman Brothers, Alice Cooper, Santana? NOT "New Rock." Pretenders? Could be either show. Bjork, Smashing Pumpkins, Oasis? "New Rock."
Another change on this one is NO ANNOUNCER. Steve Downes, J.J. Jackson, and Charlie Kendall are not only missing, but there's also nothing to identify the show as a Westwood One show on this first CD (we're missing the second CD).
That's another problem with these "two artist" In Concert shows; the EBAY vendors split them up and sell them separately, and the cue sheet usually goes with one disc but not the other. What I've been trying to do is document as completely as possible, and then let Our Beloved Audience decide how you want to divvy up the music. This one is a single disc, the second disc is missing. And somewhere there's a Peter Murphy show without a cue sheet.
The Posies were great, and not so "alternative" that they couldn't have been played on KFOG's "adult alternative" playlist. Ringo Starr covered "Golden Blunders," for example.
