 bobsboots says:

A great package. The cover is an alternate photo from the Don Hunstien West 4th street photo shoot that produced the official LP cover. Inside is Dylan at CBS studio NY with famed producer John Hammond. The recordings are clear, crisp, and right off of the mix down board. This CD belongs in every  collection. It was re-released in 1999 by an unknown Label, and again in 2001 by OMR.

And.... here's Part Two of the Voodoo Wagon Bob Dylan's Birthday Bash!

Bob and Bacall

After I've digitized a radio show, I look for information about the original concert. What else can I bring to the exhumation of a 37 year old radio show besides the vintage commercials?  Were there posters for the concert? Are there tickets on Ebay?  Backstage passes from the tour?

While looking at the Australian newspapers for information on Dylan's February shows, I ran across a letter from "Lauren Bacall, Spring Street, Melbourne."  She was angry about recent press coverage of Bob Dylan.  Given the Australian address, I figured this was not Lauren Bacall, World Famous Actress.  What would she have been doing in Australia?  Plus, THAT Lauren Bacall was born in 1924, she's the same age as my mom... neither of 'em are in the age group that listened to Bob Dylan. (My mom can't stand Bob to this day.  UPDATE: July 4th, 2026:  Mom just hit 102 1/2, and she still can't stand Bob Dylan. She's buying NVDA as she thinks this AI thing will be a "big deal" and she's having  a new sewer line installed in the family home)

Further research revealed that I was wrong; it was Lauren Bacall, Tony Award winning actress, star of stage and screen, with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 1724 Vine Street (right down the block from the Capitol Records building).  Bacall was in Australia to star in the Tennessee Williams play Sweet Bird of Youth. But why was she so pissed off about the Sydney Morning Herald's coverage of a Bob Dylan press conference?

Earlier in January, she'd had a contentious interview with Evan Whitton of the Sydney Morning Herald.  He didn't like Tennessee Williams ("a piece of overheated Southern toshery"). He asked Bacall to agree with his conclusion that "on any analysis, you are more talented than your late husband."  Whitton disapproved of the "cult" of Humphrey Bogart, wherein young people of the next generation identified with the "detachment...sardonic pessimism and unfailing honor" of his characters in films such as Casablanca and The Maltese Falcon.

Ms. Bacall expressed her displeasure at both assumptions, and at the presumption of the journalist that she must agree with him.

The newspaper followed up with a defense of Whitton by his wife, Noela Whitton, which doubled down. There was more criticism of Williams "banalities" and "trite speech after speech."

She did lighten things up by quoting letters to the newspaper, including the "most wonderful letter...from Bradon Ellem, of Thirroul, who not only socked it to Whitton on behalf of Bacall but who was also out there in defence of Bob Dylan, whose press conference Whitton observed in an article published in the Herald on February 13.  Bradon Ellem says, "one day, in a bar in the States, Mr Bob Dylan will say to Ms Lauren Bacall: "Who the hell is Evan Whitton anyway?"  She wrapped the article with a reference to Casablanca and the close "Meanwhile, who, I'd be interested to know, is Bradon Ellem?"

With the two negative articles, it was no surprise Bacall had an ax to grind with the Sydney Morning Herald.  But there's more to the story:

Here's a quote from Heartbreaker keyboards player, Benmont Tench, "In Australia, we check into the hotel the first night, and who checks in at the same time? Lauren Bacall. So we all go down later to the bar, coffee shop, whatever it was. She's down there. Bob had had us learn some standards. He was just like let's learn “Lucky Old Sun,” let's learn this, let's learn that. He had us learn an old standard, [called] “All My Tomorrows.” And I didn't understand those kinds of chords, but we got there. He and I sat down at the piano and played it for Lauren Bacall. And he sang it."

So, when there was another hostile press conference with the Sydney Morning Herald, Ms. Bacall had already been personally serenaded by Bob Dylan, and she came forward, as the paper put it, as "his protector in Australia."

As with a lot of press coverage, an ocean of ink was used arguing about not very much.  In 1997, both Bob Dylan and Lauren Bacall were honored at the Kennedy Center Honors party at the State Department in December 1997, and photographed together.  Whether they asked each other "Who the hell is Evan Whitton" is not known.

We can, however, answer Noela Whitton's question "Who, I'd be interested to know, is Bradon Ellem?"

As per the University of Western Australia website:

"He is a Professor and Senior Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Western Australia, in Perth.  Bradon Ellem is a Professor of Employment Relations in the University of Sydney Business School where he teaches in the undergraduate and postgraduate programs. He was departmental head for five years from 2011."

I sent him an email asking if he still likes Bob Dylan, but have not heard back from him.  If he answers, I'll update this post (and file).

Bob Dylan/Tom Petty
Appearances On Westwood One's Superstar Concert Series

This history covers Bob Dylan's syndicated "concert" appearances on the Westwood One Radio Network.  It does not cover specials featuring studio tracks, or interview shows.

There are four 90 minute "concert" shows by Bob Dylan/Tom Petty on the Westwood One Radio Network. These were compiled from concerts at the Entertainment Center, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia (February 24 and 25, 1986), the Tacoma Dome, Tacoma, WA (July 31, 1986), and Shoreline Amphitheater, Mountain View, CA (August 5, 1986) during the 1986 tour with Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers.

Shorter excerpts from these concerts were broadcast on Westwood One "compilation" shows.

Some of the Sydney recordings were used in the U.S. HBO TV Special "Hard To Handle," which was officially released on home video by Dylan.

The original set U.S. set list was broadcast three times:

Superstar Concert SS 86-21 "for broadcast the weekend of August 31, 1986"
Superstar Concert SS 86-03 "for broadcast the weekend of February 21, 1987"
Superstar Concert SS 86-F "for the weekend of December 11-13, 1987" (this show)

The artists are credited on the cue sheets as:

Superstar Concert SS 86-21 "Bob Dylan / Tom Petty"
Superstar Concert SS 87-03 "Tom Petty / Bob Dylan"
Superstar Concert SS 87-F "Tom Petty / Bob Dylan"

The track lists for these three versions are:

Positively 4th Street
All Along The Watchtower
Masters Of War
I'll Remember You
I Forgot More Than You'll Ever Know
Bye Bye Johnny
Breakdown
Just Like A Woman
Blowin' In The Wind
That Lucky Old Sun
So You Want to Be a Rock ’n’ Roll Star
Spike
Like A Rolling Stone
Knockin' On Heaven's Door

Tom Petty sings lead vocals on Bye Bye Johnny, Breakdown, So You Want to Be a Rock ’n’ Roll Star, and Spike.

Various sources on the Internet say there was an "overseas version" that drops the Petty tracks and adds three more Dylan songs.  I have never seen a copy of the overseas version on Ebay.  There is no Discogs listing. I did not find any hard proof, such as cue sheet to confirm the existence of the "overseas version."  It is mentioned on several websites that specialize in Bob Dylan, so it is likely to exist.

The overseas version track list I saw runs:

Positively 4th Street
All Along The Watchtower
Masters Of War
I'll Remember You
I Forgot More Than You'll Ever Know
Just Like A Woman
Blowin' In The Wind
That Lucky Old Sun
Like A Rolling Stone
Knockin' On Heaven's Door
Girl From The North Country
It Ain't Me Babe
When The Night Comes Falling From The Sky

There is circumstantial evidence of the "overseas version."  "It Ain't Me Babe" appeared on a bootleg issued in 1996 named "Hard To Find Volume 4 - Hardest To Find (Lost Diamonds 1986-96)" attributed as "Radio version. From the Tacoma Dome, Tacoma, WA - USA. Released on the Superstar Concert Series Westwood One radio Station disc 7-31-86"

The cue sheet for SS 86-21 says "for broadcast the weekend of August 31, 1986" not July 31 as mentioned on the bootleg, but the "overseas version" might not follow U.S. broadcasts dates.  But whether it exists or not, the three addition tracks were issued on:

Westwood One Superstar Concert 99-06 for broadcast the weekend of February 6/7, 1999.
Note that while Petty sings lead on two songs, the show is credited only to Bob Dylan.  I'll be posting 99-06 later today.

Positively 4th Street
I’ll Remember You
All Along The Watchtower
Masters of War
Bye Bye Johnny
Girl From The North Country
I Forgot More Than You’ll Ever Know
Just Like A Woman
That Lucky Old Sun
It Ain’t Me Babe

When The Night Comes Falling From The Sky

The tracks are sourced as follows:

Breakdown (the clue is... Tom says "everyone sings good in California...)

The source of "So You Want to Be a Rock ’n’ Roll Star" is not confirmed at this time. It was not played at Tacoma or Mountain View.  The soundboard of the Sydney show fades in, so I can't check if Bob's distinctive introduction is there or not.

Bob & Tom are on the 1987 Isle of Dreams faux-concert broadcast the weekend of September 5-7, 1987. The songs included are All Along The Watchtower, Masters Of War, and Like A Rolling Stone

Bob & Tom are also on the "Stars of the Superstars Concert Series, 1986" SSCS-87 for the weekend of January 3, 1987. The songs are Spike, Knockin' On Heaven's Door

93-01, the Best of 1992 for the weekend of JANUARY 3, 1993. has Like A Rollin' Stone and Knockin' On Heavens Door.

95-36 Various 2 CD ROCK N Roll HALL Of FAME 8/28/95 ROCK N Roll HALL Of FAME

 *THANKS TO THE ORIGINAL POSTER

Seeing as how there is a lull over at The Floppy Boot Stomp, due to lack of input. I'm going to fill the comment section up for you so that the same fate that happened over at The FBS doesn't happen here. How easy can that be? Now you won't have to say anything, I (Jobe) will fill in what you are going to say (about this post) in the comments so this way all you lazy shits that take but never give don't have to worry about The Wagon. The only problem I see is that hopefully The Boss won't look at the comment section (he never does anyway) Also got a babe for you, maybe you'll comment on that. See scans
