Despite its initial, and previously ongoing, failure to appear, this recording, simply titled The Ultra Rare Tracks, contains the long - awaited cuts which fans were hoping for more than 30 years back.

Granted permission to use any Jimi Hendrix samples they wished, this U.K. sextet released the funky If 60's Were 90's in 1994. The center of the outfit is Du Kane and Luke Baldry.

This recording is almost like hearing Jimi again for the first time. I accidentally heard one of the tracks while flipping through the busy FM radio dial one day. Being a big Hendrix fan, I marveled at how such an awesome piece of art had managed to escape me before. We're talking unmistakable Hendrix signature feel, masterfully interleaved with tasteful, beautifully done modern electronica. This album presents a sonic pioneer in a new setting.
I've played this CD hundreds of times. How can you tell a true classic? Because it still sounds just as fresh today as the day I first discovered it.

Jimi Hendrix & The Band of Gypsys live on New Year's Day 1970 at the Fillmore East in New York City. This late show was broadcast on WNEW FM in NYC. Introduction by Bill Graham. This was the last band that Hendrix played in (with Buddy Miles & Billy Cox), and the funk-rock style signaled a change in musical direction for Jimi.

Some of these songs ended up on the live Band of Gypsys album released by Capitol later that year. Jimi passed away 9 months later of a drug overdose.

David Crosby was house sitting for Joni Mitchell (who was away on tour) at her sprawling Laurel Canyon house. Present at this early hour of the morning were Crosby, Bob (The Bear) Hite, and a very inebriated Jim Morrison. Crosby was talking to Bob about the show he had witnessed the previous night. We join this tape in progress. Crosby: "And man when he hit the high note of You Gave Me A Mountain man I almost cried"  Bob: "I've always liked that song, and Marty Robbins does it so much better than Jim Nabors" Crosby: "I know man and then when I asked if I could go and meet him backstage man and the doorman said sure but you know I require head, I dropped down on both knees man" Bob: "Wow so you got to meet him then?" Crosby: "Yeah man and let me tell you the man is bigger in person than he is on stage man"  At this time Morrison descends from the staircase with a bottle of Jack Daniels in his right hand.  Bob: "Ah c'mon Jim put some goddamn pants on, nobody wants to see that shit at this time of the morning"  Morrison: (unintelligible)  Crosby: "Let me roll another joint man"  Bob: "Hey I noticed when I came up to the front porch this morning there's a great big marble statue of the Venus De Milo, Joni didn't have that last time I was here, where did that come from?"   Crosby: "I bought that for her at a yard sale man"  At this time Morrison reemerges from the stairway with his leather pants on backwards.  Morrison: "Hey Bob (unintelligible)"  Bob: "Damn that statue looks mighty heavy, how did you get it here?"  Crosby: "We put it on the roof of Neil's Vdub man.It caved the fucker in on the drive man"  Bob: "Well how did you lift it and put it by the doorway?"  Morrison: "Yeah how'd you(unintelligible)"  Crosby: "Shit man, I lifted it and put it there man"  Bob: "Bullshit that fucker has to weigh at least 600 pounds"  Morrison: "Yeah that fucker has to weigh(unintelligible)" Crosby: "What, you don't think I can lift it man?"  Bob: "No way"  Morrison: "Yeah no(unintelligible)"  Crosby: "O.K. man, let's go outside and I'll show you man"  At this time the crew gathers themselves and walks out to the front yard. Crosby: Man Bob, I can't believe you don't think I can lift this"  Bob: "Careful don't hurt yourself"  Morrison: "Yeah careful you don't(unintelligible)  Crosby: "O.K. let me spit on my hand man and I'll show you man" At this point in the tape some very loud grunting is heard.  Crosby: "Ow goddamn man I think I pulled my groin man"  Bob: "Should we call an ambulance?"  Morrison: "Yeah should we call (unintelligible)  At this point the tape runs out and we can only speculate what transpired afterwards.  See scans
