“You want to feel it, don’t you?” Betty Davis asks on the Nasty Gal deep cut “Feelins.” The certainty in her delivery lets you know that she’s already figured you out — not only what you want to feel, but how to make you feel it. She brings catharsis to the surface on “Dedicated to the Press,” pushing the bass in her voice to challenge the pluck of the bass line the track runs along. She cranks up the grit on “Nasty Gal,” taking all of the wicked names she’d been called and tossing them back like grenades. And yet, these records exist alongside the likes of “Talkin’ Trash” and “The Lone Ranger,” sensual cuts delivered with a wink and a growl. Davis did it all, felt it all, and relished the thrill that freedom gave her. Nasty Gal marked an effective end to the funk and soul musician’s career, aided by cultural backlash and suits in boardrooms. But it was always our loss, never hers. —L.P.

Discontinued & Out of Print

The confusing plethora of artists working under the name of Luther (nickname here) Johnson can leave even those with a decent knowledge of blues in a major state of confusion. But in this biographical entry, we concern ourselves with the life and times of Luther "Georgia Boy/Snake Boy" Johnson who, to make matters even more confusing, also worked and recorded under the names Little Luther and Luther King. (It turns out his real name wasn't even Luther, but Lucius.) Upon his military discharge, he picked guitar as a member of the Milwaukee Supreme Angels gospel group, working the local church circuit. But the blues bug hit and he soon had his own little blues trio together, eventually settling in Chicago by the early '60s. He played for a while with Elmore James and was a regular fixture in the Muddy Waters band by the mid-'60s. He recorded as Little Luther for Chess in the mid-'60s ("The Twirl") and by 1970 was relocated to Boston, MA, working as a solo artist. The next five years found him working steadily on the college and blues festival circuit before cancer overtook him on March 18, 1976, at a mere 41 years of age.

"being paid just enough to make them wanna KILL for you, but not enough to make them wanna DIE for you,"
~Mercenaries

I know it's probably hard for a John Cale fan that may not know this record to accept the guy dropping his acoustical piano and violin for an electric guitar, and issuing what's most probably the most brutal/ straightforward live album ever- but it would be a crime to ignore this masterpiece, which runs at full voltage all the way down. Captain Hook is probably the best Cale performance ever, Mercenaries the best anti-war song ever written, but anyway the whole album is an astonishing experience, provided of course that you do know how to pump up the volume for your speakers.

Beautiful People - If 60's Were 90's -1994
Studio Sessions @320
Out of Print - 5 of 5 stars

Granted permission to use any Jimi Hendrix samples they wished, this U.K. sextet released the funky If 60's Were 90's in 1994. The center of the outfit is Du Kane and Luke Baldry.
~ John Bush, All Music Guide

This recording is almost like hearing Jimi again for the first time. I accidentally heard one of the tracks while flipping through the busy FM radio dial one day. Being a big Hendrix fan, I marveled at how such an awesome piece of art had managed to escape me before. We're talking unmistakable Hendrix signature feel, masterfully interleaved with tasteful, beautifully done modern electronica. This album presents a sonic pioneer in a new setting.
I've played this CD hundreds of times. How can you tell a true classic? Because it still sounds just as fresh today as the day I first discovered it.

 Track List:

1. Comin' To Get You
2. Get Your Mind Together
3. If 60's Was 90's
4. Stone Crazy

6. Happiness On The Wind
7. Sock It To Me

So retro that it is actually cool! Rain Dance Live is an amazing concert recording by a bunch of veteran blues rockers led by legendary keyboardist / vocalist / producer Gregg Rolie. Rolie was a long time member of Carlos Santana’s band and a founding member of Journey (as well as founder of bands The Storm and Abraxas Pool). Gregg and band recorded this album while on tour in 2007. After giving this a listen it is obvious why Rolie was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. Fans of Carlos Santana or Stevie Ray Vaughn won’t want to miss this one.

Cranes - Wings Of Joy - 1991
Studio Recordings @  VBR
Out of Print

This was and always will be one of the most haunting, beautiful, intense and O-R-I-G-I-N-A-L albums of the 1990's decade. The swirling screeching guitars, the crashing drums, the melancholy piano and Allison's sweet, haunting child like plaintive voice make up one of the most unforgettable albums of its time.

This album should be listened to as a whole since many of the songs blend together, still gems on here that deserve their own mention.

"Starblood" is one that is unmatched in its raw, primal, angry intensity and is as passionate as any great punk song. It is placed among songs like "Leaves of Summer" and "Adoration" which are as moving and sophisticated as any modern day classical composition.

Alison Shaw – vocals, bass guitar, acoustic guitar
Jim Shaw – guitar, bass guitar, keyboards, drums
Paul Smith – guitar, keyboards
Matt Cope – guitar
Manu Ross – drums

Nucleus - Live in Bremen, Germany 1971

Back From The Dead...
Originally posted September 20, 2014

Nucleus - Live Bremen
Bremen, Germany 1971
Soundboard @256
{Out of Print}

The result of a productive continuing partnership between Cuneiform Records and Radio Bremen, this double CD captures a 1971 concert by the Nucleus sextet, led by Ian Carr on trumpet and flugelhorn. Fans of the Soft Machine will be intrigued by the fact that none other than Karl Jenkins (Hohner electric piano and oboe), Roy Babbington (bass), and John Marshall (drums) are all on this recording. All three later left Nucleus to join Soft Machine and helped drive that band after the third line-up change in its history.

Track List:
cd1
1. Song for the Bearded Lady
2. By the Pool
3. Kookie and the Zoom Club
4. Torrid Zone
5. Zoom Out

cd2
1. Snkehips' Dream
2. Oasis/Money Mad
3. Dortmund Backtrack
4. Bremen Dreams
5. Elastic Rock
6. A Bit for Vic
7. Persephone's Jive

This fabulous 2 disc set is a legit release of a concert taped in 1971 for
German radio. We have to thank Cuneiform a hundred times over for locating
and releasing this excellent sounding live concert from one of the greats
of British jazz-rock. The band consists of Ian Carr-trumpet,flugelhorn,
percussion; Karl Jenkins-oboe, electric piano; Brian Smith-saxes, flutes,
percussion; Roy Babbington-bass; John Marshall-drums,percussion; and the
only appearance with the group of guitarist Ray Russell. Brit-jazz lovers
will recognize the name but for those who haven't had the pleasure of
hearing Russell's outstanding fretwork - wow! Imagine Allan Holdsworth
trying to sound like Jeff Beck & playing with Soft Machine in 1971! Nice
liner notes and some archival photos round out this superb release!

A British sextet formed by trumpeter/flugelhorn player Ian Carr in 1969,
Nucleus were articulating their own take on the fusing of jazz and rock
before Bitches Brew hit the streets.  The key difference between the
British unit and their Stateside contemporaries was their attack, which
was markedly less alloyed by jazz practice.  Though the front line of
Carr and saxophonist/flautist Brian Smith had considerable jazz experience
Nucleus were noticeably, if not painstakingly seeking a rock credibility
in their continuous, largely groove-driven sets.

Dwight Twilley covering the Beatles? Yes, this is a great fit and a great song selection. I love the similarities and also the little changes that Dwight has put on these songs. When an artist "tweaks" cover songs but keeps them recognizable it keeps the listener interested. Great job, Dwight.

Track List:
1. Come Together (2:53)
2. Dear Prudence (3:57)
3. In My Life (3:43)

The King Brothers - 6X3 - OUT OF PRINT

*THANKS TO THE ORIGINAL POSTER

Recently on a Boot post somebody made a comment on how they come there as it is a "feel good" site (thanks for the comment rum) But wait a minute I never signed up for a "Feel Good" site no...no I'm only here to promote misery, dread, and bad vibes. So what you have here is some GREAT rock and roll. Probably considered punk, nosie rock. This music is anti-Doobie Brothers, anti-Loverboy, anti-Taylor Swift (but I do like her politics) anti-Ted Nugent, anti-Jason Aldean. Believe me YOU NEED THIS

Songs

1.Doo Doo Scratch

2.Paint It Black (I don't think it's a Stones cover)

3.1979

4.There Is Nothing

8. Like A Wave
9. Crazy Tonight
10. Everything For Everyone
11. All Tomorrow's Parties
12. I'm Up Here

Johnette Napolitano has one of the most alluring & haunting voices in music. This offering is no exception. Teeming with her signature sultry voice, she engages and pulls you into the music. Highly recommend this CD, as it is very listenable & I caught myself continually wanting to increase the volume just a bit. It is just a touch different from her Concrete Blonde days, but still connected. She is an engaging & soulful performer.

Johnette has repeatedly proven that she can make music that is clever, thought provoking, beyond entertaining and just plain rockin'!! This album is no different and will make you wonder how so many talentless hacks can get so famous, while an artist with Johnette's raw talent, power and wisdom can go so underappreciated. Thank you Ms. Napolitano.

Pretty And Twisted - 1995

Back from The Dead...Again
Originally posted February 8, 2010 & May 2, 2020

Pretty & Twisted - self titled -1995
Studio Recordings @320
Out of Print
$35+ Amazon

An under-rated masterwork by Johnette Napolitano (Concrete Blonde) and Marc Moreland (Wall Of Voodoo). What Concrete Blonde could have veered into, but slipped off of in Mexican Moon. Dark landscapes and humor tinged music throughout.

Pretty & Twisted were a sort of bongos-and-synthesizer take on the more bluesy Concrete Blonde, but that never stops Napolitano's always-magnificent voice from being fully invested in the project, and filling it with enough CB-esque tropes to not be too surprising (there's even a requisite Roxy Music cover - a great one, Mother of Pearl). "Dear Marlon Brando," obsequious as it is, is a charming pop lullaby of great finesse, "The Highs are Too High" gives such good atmosphere it wound up being used on a Sopranos episode, and "Watching the Water" is such a moving ballad, even the synthesizers that wreak of the early 90's can't keep it from connecting.

Surprising that more Wall of Voodoo fans aren't familiar with this album, given some great Marc Moreland guitar work. Not every song on this album is a knockout, but a couple of them, "Souvenir" in particular, are really, really powerful, with Moreland doing some fine work on what is probably the most memorable song here. Moreland added a lot of depth to it and it's a shame they didn't do more work together before his untimely death in 2002.

Track List:
1. Highs Are Too High
2. Mother of Pearl
3. Souvenir

4. No Daddy No

5. Ride

6. Train Song (Edge of Desperation)
7. Stranger
8. Singing Is Fire

9. Don't Take Me Down

10. Come Away With Me

11. Dear Marlon Brando

Jo Ann Kelly - Tramp 1974
(Reissued 2000)
Studio Recordings @192
{Out of Print}

The British blues singer/guitarist Jo-Anne Kelly (1944-90) was a little-known treasure. She was a member of the same generation of musicians as the Rolling Stones, but she was more interested in reviving prewar country blues than in popularizing postwar electric blues. Jo-Anne sat in with the Yardbirds in early in their early Clapton days, had a long association with The Groundhogs, and in the 1970s did a stint in the blues-rock band Tramp. But mostly she played acoustic guitar and performed in folk music clubs. She was a regular support act for American blues musicians of an older generation touring England, such as Fred McDowell and Big Joe Williams.
Jo-Anne didn't record much, and her records were hard to find in the shops - certainly in my country(Australia). Those that that I did lay my hands on revealed a powerful voice and a driving, rhythmic guitar style. Her heroine was Memphis Minnie.

Digitally remastered 2001. A great mix of previously unreleased & rare live & studio sessions (14 tracks, over 65 minutes of music). Features contributions from Fleetwood Mac's Danny Kirwan, plus Keef Hartley, Bob Brunning & Bob Hall. Tracks 9-14 feature Danny Kirwan.

Swans - The Burning World (1989)

Back From The Dead...As Requested!
Originally posted May 5, 2010 & September 11, 2020

Swans - The Burning World
Studio Recordings @320

Available for around $50 used
Out of Print

Crawling out of the same noisy, arty New York underground that sired Sonic Youth and Lydia Lunch, Swans created a dark, abrasive, murky, slowed-down noise rock that served as a starting point for their ruminations about alienation, depression, depravity, and the disturbing side of human nature. Singers Michael Gira and Jarboe have been the group's only constants over the years; Gira has taken the group from its early confrontational shock tactics to a more varied, mature attack. The band first appeared on record in 1982 with a self-titled EP, and these early releases document their search for the musical vocabulary to express their ideas effectively. Female singer Jarboe joined the group for 1986's Holy Money and brought a gentler, more relaxed dimension to Swans' sound. The band entered its creative peak with 1987's Children of God and the follow-up, Feel Good Now, and secured a deal with MCA through a cover of Joy Division's "Love Will Tear Us Apart," which became an indie hit in the U.K. In between releases, Gira and Jarboe recorded with their side project, Skin, an outlet for their quieter, more reflective side. Their first MCA album, The Burning World, came the closest to mainstream rock of anything they had done up to that point, and 1991's White Light From the Mouth of Infinity continued that trend. In 1995, Gira published a book, The Consumer and Other Stories, through Henry Rollins' publishing house; the book's release coincided with that of the album The Great Annihilator. This is the first and only major label release for the Swans.

I LOVE this record!
