Hey, kids! Today we've got an hour and a half of John Hiatt...more than enough for a "double album," (as you hep cats put it).  

Some of these songs circulated in various configuration as "The Bug Demos."  The story is that Hiatt recorded the tracks as publishing demos for Bug Music, an independent Los Angeles music publisher.  The demos were cut to pitch the songs to other artists. 

I received a cassette in trade back in the late 80s.  My track list isn't an exact match to the circulating Bug Demos...and my tape was a lower generation.  So... I digitized my cassette and applied a very light hiss reduction.  As the tape hiss stood out between songs, I applied fade ins and fade outs to make it even less noticeable. 

I haven't done a track-by-track comparison with the Bug Demos, but Learning How To Love You, Think It Over, Real One, Love Gets Strange, Ride Along, Blind Faith, Big Fine Car, That's The Matter With Me, and Inside Job are not on them.

I've also cross-referenced the songs that were picked up, covered, and officially released, along with the names of the artists, and it's in the text file.

I'm not sure if the "1975-1983" part is true.  That's how this was labeled when I traded for it back in the late 1980s. Most of the songs here released by Hiatt or covered by other artists seem to fall in 1980-1983, so I want to call out the 1975-1979 reference as questionable.

I don't know the generation, it's low, but with hiss.  It's mainly noticeable between tracks. Hiss removal usually make the music sound weird, and since the music sounds okay, I just applied fades on the hiss between the songs to make it less annoying.  My tape also had LONG gaps between each song, 8 to 20 seconds, so I tightened that up.

Several of these songs turned up on John Hiatt albums. Dave Edmunds covered "Something Happens," Frankie Miller did "If I Can Love Somebody," Amos Garrett did "Everybody's Girl."  The Searchers covered "Ambulance Chaser" but it wasn't released until this century.

There's also a bunch of songs about which I could find no reference on the Internet, so I'm guessing at titles.

I gotta say...an O.V. Wright cover?  That's pretty groovy!

UPDATE:  Our friend Anonymous supplied us with some corrected titles, so I've followed his recommendations.  I've retagged the files with the corrected titles and added his comparison of these tracks to previously circulating demo tapes.

This is part one of a two part Farm Aid compilation sourced from Farm Aid IV, held on April 7, 1990 in Indianapolis, Indiana.  

Our friend, Anonymous, requested these two shows a few weeks back, and in a serendipitous coincidence, I had already digitized both shows for a future project.  Since he (or she) asked, I moved it to the top of the pile and got to work on it.

Bonnie Raitt duets with John Hiatt on Thing Called Love, and with Jackson Browne on World In Motion.

Guns N' Roses gave their first performance of Civil War, which was also the last performance of Steve Adler with the band.

Iggy Pop makes his only appearance on a Westwood One live concert show.

Farm Aid IV sold out 45,000 tickets in 90 minutes, featured 70 different artists appearing over a 13 hour event.  The show was broadcast live on the Nashville Network. A two hour highlight show aired on CBS. 

The Indianapolis Star newspaper reported, "Guns N’ Roses was flying high as the hottest band in the world — but their abysmal performance at Farm Aid IV lead to the dismissal of drug-addled drummer Steven Adler that night and the eventual dismantling of the band. 

The night was anchored by heavy-hitters Garth Brooks, Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne, John Mellencamp and an unscheduled stop by Elton John, who was in town visiting Ryan White at Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health and left his hospital bedside to join Farm Aid IV. “This one’s for Ryan,” John said before he launched into “Candle in the Wind.” White died the following day of complications from AIDS at the age of 18."

Westwood One repeated the Jackson Browne, Neil Young, Crosby, Stills Nash & Young, John Cougar Mellencamp, Elton John, and Guns N' Roses tracks on Westwood One Superstar Concert Series #92-21, issued on CD and broadcast on May 23-24, 1992.  Discogs says the announcer incorrectly says the show's from Dallas. 

Note that WW1 chose to repeat the "abysmal" Guns N' Roses performance...so was it really as bad as the Indianapolis Star said it was? 

On the commercials, we have Martin Mull promoting TGI Fridays in part one, and Al Franken doing uncredited work on a Trident commercials in part two.  Westwood One airs a series of promotions for an upcoming satellite broadcast of the 1990 Knebworth charity concert with short comments from Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton, and Kurt Smith (Tears For Fears).

Our pal Steve Downes is back once again to handle the announcing duties.

Another in our ongoing series of KFOG tapes from down in my basement.  Digitizeed from my master copy of the broadcast, recorded on high-bias tape.  I can't check if it was Maxell or TDK, as the basement is now two blocks away (we moved to a new apartment but kept the storage...)  But it was either TDK SA or Maxell XL-IIS, those were my "go to" tapes for live broadcasts.  

This digitization was updated May 2021 with better tagging: Album, Year, Comment, Disc Number, Album Artist, and Composer have been added.  FLAC files from .wavs.

And yes, I let the "KFOG Outro" go on for the full three minutes of d.j. chatter.  I used to cut that stuff off, now I think it's a part of history.  Never thought I'd miss John Grappone's voice....but I do.

I have a cassette of the original live broadcast.  The original transmission of the show dropped the feed from the Plant several times; KFOG covered by shifting to their usual playlist, and going back to the Plant when the link was recovered.  The original broadcast did NOT include the encore of the cover of the Ramones "I Wanna Be Sedated."  I never digitized my original tape because it dropped the broadcast...but even if it was complete, it would have missed the WONDERFUL cover of the Ramones "I Wanna Be Sedated."

This is NOT sourced from one of my master tapes.  As the show includes the (originally unbroadcast) encore, this likely comes from a later rebroadcast of the show.  Given that the original broadcast was marred by repeated drops of the live feed, it's not surprising KFOG rebroadcast the show.  While I don't know the generation, this is an excellent recording, and I recommend it to you.

Little Village / Warfield Theatre, SF - Westwood One In Concert #92-26

Little Village was a short-lived project by John Hiatt, Nick Lowe, Ry Cooder and Jim Keltner.  They left behind one so-so album and several radio broadcasts.  I know they did a BBC broadcast, a WBCN-FM (Boston), and a WXRT (Chicago), but their most well circulated show is this Westwood One syndicated show from the Warfield Theatre in San Francisco.  The show was picked up by European bootleggers in the mid-90s, appearing as "Living Action," "Solar Sex Panel," "Anywhere USA," "On The Border," and "Live San Francisco '92"...and most recently resurfaced as a gray market release called "The Action In Frisco" that's easily available on Amazon.

All of these come from the Westwood One In Concert broadcast.  I've only spotted one single syndication of this show, as an In Concert for the week of June 22, 1992,  but there may be other syndication dates out there as Westwood One usually did more than one broadcast of a show.   

While this is sort of "old hat" with all the multiple versions out there, I wanted a copy of for my archives of the original show and figure someone else might want it, too.  So, here's the original broadcast, with commercials edited out.

UPDATE: The bootleggers have often listed the date as December 7, 1992 for this show.  But the Westwood One show was broadcast "the week of June 22, 1992," so it's IMPOSSIBLE (unless Nick Lowe has a time-traveling DeLorean...) for this show to have taken place in December 1992.  There's a image up on Getty Images of the band at the Warfield that confirms the date of this show as April 7, 1992.  While it's possible they did play a December 1992 show later in the year, that date is just plain wrong.  

The most recent issue of this show as "Little Village ‎– The Action In Frisco: The San Francisco Broadcast 1992" makes the claim that "when the tour bus pulled up in San Fran and the fancy gear was unloaded into the Fox Warfield Theatre, the whole affair was broadcast across the greater Frisco area by local FM radio. "  It's possible that there was a local FM broadcast, but if it existed it would have MORE songs.  There's a show from the Orpheum in Boston later in April that has 19 songs; this has 13.  Plus, if there was a "local broadcast," a copy would have turned up on the Internet by now. Their source wasn't a "local broadcast," they just bootlegged the Westwood One show.

Earlier this year I posted a 1987 Robert Cray show and mentioned that it had been a double-bill broadcast...and we had a C-box request for the Hiatt portion.  So...we aim to please, so here it is.  It's short, but as is often the case with a short set from the opening act, Hiatt and band are on fire.

I should mention that I have the Hiatt show from 1989 at the Warfield, too, as well as a 1994 broadcast from Slim's.  Are you interested in those, too?
