Sam reports, "The show was taken from the actual station reel to reel. It was one of the old 10" metal reels. I always thought that they (Backstage Ltd.) were somehow involved/related to the BBC Rock Hour reel to reel shows, as I believe they were both operating in northern New Jersey."

I found a short blurb that said "Backstage Ltd. (was) resigned as the American production company for the BBC/London Wavelength "Rock Concert Hour"" and that Starfleet Studios in Boston handled most of their taping work.  Patrick Griffin is mentioned as the producer, along with Kevin Kalunian as an associate.  Both of them turn up on Supergroups In Concert, A Night On The Road, and On Stage Live shows.  

In addition, there's a press report that Backstage Ltd. was producing a Tanya Tucker concert for ABC Radio.

As to their location...I found a mailing address for Backstage Ltd. in a classified employment ad as 1 Alvirne Drive, Hudson, New Hampshire 03051.  That's a private residence in a ranch-style suburban home, so it isn't where the business was based.  

While I couldn't find a review of the actual show, I've included some 1977 press coverage of the Jam.  I hope you enjoy the vintage newspaper clippings.

We're looking into whether this came out as a BBC Rock Hour in America.  BBC Rock Hour #223 was from Newcastle in 1980, as was BBC College Concert #13.  However, this would have been before London Wavelength switched distribution to vinyl records.  The reel to reel shows are poorly documented, so it may have come out on a reel. 

We don't have a broadcast date, as there was no cue sheet or affidavit included. I thought the ads might provide a clue, but they're not much help.  The broadcast had to be after the date of the show itself, so it was October 1977 or later. Both Jean Michael Jarre's "Oxygene" LP and Rainbow's "On Stage" were issued before the concert took place.  It is LIKELY that the promotion for these two albums would have taken place in late 1977 or early 1978.  My guess is that the show was broadcast in that same time period.

This is a Westwood One show combining 1973 tracks by the Faces with 1976 tracks by Rod Stewart as a solo act.

The Faces tracks are identified as from the BBC in 1973. Four of them are from the April 1, 1973, BBC In Concert show recorded at the Paris Theatre. "Angel" may also be from that show, but I don't see "Angel" listed as played on Setlist.fm.  I cross-referenced it and it's the same track as on "Five Guys Walked Into A Bar." That one is identified as 1973 BBC, so that's how I'm tagging it in the commentary meta-tag.

The Rod Stewart tracks are from his four-night run at Olympia in December 1976. He played December 21, 22, 23, and 24. I believe all of these tracks are from the 24th, which was broadcast on BBC 2 as "The Old Grey Whistle Test brings us Rod Stewart's Christmas concert from Olympia, live, in stereo."

However, the King Biscuit Flower Hour recorded several shows at Oympia.  Concert Vault has the 21, 22, and 23rd in streaming audio.  I haven't cross referenced to check every track.

This show has been bootlegged many times, under many titles.

As per WIKI, "Olympia London, sometimes referred to as the Olympia Exhibition Centre, is an exhibition centre, event space and conference centre in West Kensington, in the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham, London, England. A range of international trade and consumer exhibitions, conferences and sporting events are staged at the venue.

There is an adjacent railway station at Kensington (Olympia) which is both a London Overground station, and a London Underground station."

I've seen this show listed as "Olympia London," "Exhibition Hall," "Olympia Theatre," "Olympia Grand Hall," "Grand Hall Olympia," and "Christmas Concert."

I looked it up...the location is now a chip shop.

December 1976 was a moment when things were shifting.  Teddy Boys riot at a Bill Haley concert.  An unrepentant Bill Grundy stands his ground, claiming he used sarcasm to show up the Sex Pistols. 

And Rod Stewart was riding high.  The critics still loved him; as did his original audience.  From fifty years out, it's hard to remember just how big Rod Stewart was in 1976. He was daily front page news in the United Kingdom. As the Huddersfield Daily Examiner put it, "There's been nothing quite like it since the Beatles."

So... I've put in a plethora of press for you to peruse and ponder.

There's an exchange of bitchy remarks in the press between Rod Stewart and Elton John.  Rod says Elton was born to be chairman of a football club, not a rock star, and Elton tells Rod he should stick to grave-digging.

There's an article mentioning Rod was under police guard after "a gang of youths had hired a local thug to beat him up."

There's a six-part series in the Manchester paper, spread over six days, detailing Rod's rise to superstardom. 

I've got two concert reviews of the 21st, a newspaper advert mentioning the show was starting earlier than advertised, pictures of Rod on stage from one of the nights (not sure which night...) and a follow up article that Rod was cancelling his Glasgow concert due to illness.

You get 300 dpi scans of the disc labels, the cue sheet, an entertainment listing, and two slightly different versions of a concert review from the Fort Worth Star Telegram.

The newspaper review mentions that the audience was small, with only 7,500 out of the 19,000 seats sold.  The opening act was Cold Chisel, an Australian band.

Occasionally we find there are two versions of a radio broadcast.  The most common occurrence is a live radio broadcast from a local station (or a national satellite broadcast from a provider like Starfleet Blair) that is later edited into a syndicated broadcast with national commercials added.  It's unusual to find a show that was syndicated twice by competing networks.

But we have one here.  Joe Walsh's July 10th concert from the Reunion Arena in Dallas, TX was syndicated by NBC's The Source network and by the King Biscuit Flower Hour.  

The Source did the first syndicated broadcast with a window of July 24-25-26, 1981, and then repeated the show on December 19, 1981, and again on September 17-18-19, 1982. The Source show ran Meadows, Over and Over, In The City, A Life of Illusion, The Bomber, Dreams, Theme from Boat Weirdos, Funk #49, You Never Know, Life's Been Good, Rocky Mountain Way, and All Night Long.

King Biscuit carried a different set list on October 11, 1981.  They dropped Over and Over, Dreams, You Never Know and Life's Been Good, and added the encore song of Get Back.

There are a few other minor differences, too.  On Rocky Mountain way, the KBFH version has a weird effect on a few seconds of vocals at the start of "Rocky Mountain Way."  On the Source version, Walsh sings the line, "...spent the last year Dallas Texas Way..."  On the KBFH, the "Dallas Texas way" part is...obscured. 

I'm not sure what they did.  It's not reversed, or beeped, but you can't make it out.  Why the heck they took the time to do that is baffling.  The nationally syndicated shows will edit profanity, but there's no good reason I can think of for this edit.  I've been to Dallas, and it's a pretty nice city.  Well, except for the Dallas Cowboys, but sports rivalry would be a silly reason to obscure the name of a city or state.

The other difference is that "All Night Long" is two minutes longer on the KBFH.  They list it as "All Night Long / All Night Long Reprise" as there's a long stretch of audience noise, followed by the band playing a bit more of the song.  On the Source version, they don't include the reprise.

The best way to present this is to put both shows together, back-to-back.

I did this Source show a few years back...actually, back in 2012, which is more than a few.  This is a fresh digitization. I've gotten better at this in the last 12 years.

Wolfgang's Vault is still identifying this show as October 11, 1981.  That was wrong in 2012, and it's still wrong in 2024.  As mentioned above, the syndicated broadcast by KBFH was on October 11, not the concert itself.  Another rock and roll mystery solved!

Johnette Napolitano is an American singer, songwriter and bassist best known as the lead vocalist/songwriter and bassist for the alternative rock group Concrete Blonde. She now continues writing and recording music as a solo artist.

Here's the much fabled debut solo album by Concrete Blonde singer Johnette Napolitano that was supposed to have been released in 1998, but never saw the light of day. It remains unreleased to this day.

She recorded a solo album titled Sound Of A Woman around 1996-1997, and performed many of the songs on a solo tour opening for Paul Westerberg. The album was set to be released on IRS (a subdivision of Island Records), the label of her old band, Concrete Blonde. 1997-1998 was a bad time for Island, starting with the sudden departure of founder/CEO Chris Blackwell and ending with the total reorganization of the label. Announcer Dan Formento says the show was recorded May 9, 1981 at the "Chicago Amphitheater"
Discogs lists it as "Recorded Live May 09, 1981 At Universal Amphitheatre, Chicago, IL."

First of all, let's solve the mystery of the show's date.

Concert Archives says May 8 was Chicago, and May 9 was Rockford.  These two dates are also on Wikipedia.  

I found confirmation of it being May 8 in the Sunday April 2, 1981 edition of the Chicago Tribune. 

Second, it's the International Amphitheatre, not the Chicago or Universal Amphitheater.

Five National Conventions to nominate the President were held there (two Republican, three Democratic).  The Beatles played there twice.  Elvis Presley wore his gold lame suit for the first time there.

It was torn down in 1999 and is now the site of an Aramark Uniform services plant.

There's a Japanese bootleg CD named "Definitive Chicago 1981" that also claims "Universal Amphitheater" but has the correct May 8th date.  The Swingin' Pig issued a 2-LP bootleg in 1993 also calling it the Universal, but this time the date is June 23, 1981.

I also found a promotional sticker from WMET confirming both May 8 and International Amphitheatre.

WMET switched to the call letters WRXR and some programming horror called "Male Adult Contemporary" in 1986 (Beach Boys, Sade), a year later in 1987 they became WNUA with New Age and Smooth Jazz, 2009 saw them become a Spanish language adult contemporary station until 2012 when they switched to a Regional Mexican format, and then in 2015 switched back to English language Country with new call letters WEBG, and then in 2020 returned to rock and changed the call letters to WCHI.

I paid silly-money for this one on EBAY.  I hope someone in Our Beloved Audience finds it of interest.

Santana has three NBC The Source shows, all of them concerts.

The first was Santana Concert broadcast on December 14-15-16, 1979.

The EBAY ad for this said the source was Osaka, Japan. I don't have a copy of this yet.  Sam and I think that this was the very first concert broadcast on the NBC The Source network.  As such, it is rare and I haven'tt

The next was Santana Concert broadcast May 9-10-11, 1981 (this show) recorded at Santa Cruz, CA Feb. 21, 1981.  The Discogs listing for the 1981 show had the 1979 disc labels posted, which caused some confusion there. I posted the correct labels and added the cue sheet on 01/04/2023.

The third show was The Santana Concert Encore October 9-10-11, 1981. This is a repeat of the Santa Cruz show.

As usual...this is recorded right off the radio discs, declicked by yours truly, comes with 300 dpi scans of the cue sheet, all four disc labels, and has newspaper articles confirming the date and location of the concert.

It says "auditorium" right on the building.

LPs cleaned with the HumminGuru Ultrasonic Vinyl Record Cleaning system prior to transfer of the vinyl to CD-r. A Zerostat Positive Ion gun was used prior to LP playback on said system. No EQ was used during playback, playback was a flat transfer. I used Goldwave to to manualy remove a few real big pops. I did not use a pop fix or noise reduction program as they tend to mar the sound of the waves. 2 minutes of silence for local ads was deleted between tracks 13 & 14. "Long Gone" was separated from "Take It Anyway You Want It" they had run together and "Long Gone" was not listed.
Depending on sources also appearing with The Outlaws were Iron City Houserockers & The Johnny Van Zant Band or Molly Hatchet. The cue sheet I have is signed by the DJ as airing on Super Bowl Sunday. The DJ left little notes for himself on the cue sheet.

One more from the Sam Elliot's Mustache collection.  Sam didn't scan the disc labels, so I grabbed what I found off of Discogs.

A review from Billboard mentions this is the "phenomenally successful rock groups first live concert broadcast."  I don't know if that's true, but their first King Biscuit show didn't air until Feb. 20, 1983, and Westwood One was late to the party with a Superstars Concert in August of 1982. So, it is LIKELY to be true.

The Billboard review also mentions the broadcast was sourced from two nights and mixed by the band's engineer/producer Brad Aaron.

There was noticeable surface noise at the start of track 5 ("Cheyenne Anthem") for about 45 seconds.  I knocked it down as much as possible without distorting the sound.  You'll hear it on headphones; not so much on a stereo...and hey, it's 45 seconds, it will be over before you know it.  Other than that, this show is near-perfect.

As previously mentioned, from the first Source show in 1979 until about September of 1981, there were no numbers printed on the discs.  After that, the numbering system was the last two digits of the year plus an ascending number sequence.  Before then, there were numbers etched into the run-out grooves, but no obvious numbering system.  I'm notating these shows with the year and the month of broadcast. So, I'm calling this 1980-12 for the year, and the month of the broadcast.

Here at our clandestine Voodoo Wagon orbital satellite, I dug into our print archives and uncovered vintage ads for this show.

Check 'em out.  The promoters are Perkins, Perkins & Geragos.  

Yeah, it's THAT Marc Geragos, from the O.J. Simpson trial. Since the Juice just shuffled off this mortal coil, it's timely to repost this show.

At the time, Geragos was a Loyola law student by day, and a rock promoter by night.

On the advertising, you can see the effect of column inch ad rates.  The Los Angeles Times ads are small 1 column x 4 or 5 inch ads, but the lower costs of the L.A. Weekly had them buy a full page ad.

Flac files of wavs, lovingly declicked by Đ®åⒻṬëŕṽøï.  Four 300 dpi scans of the disc labels.  The cue sheet is missing.  You also get an article from the November 20, 1980 issue of Billboard magazine discussing the upcoming radio show, the "Calendar" page from The Sun (Baltimore, MD) from Sept. 26, 1980 listing the show, and even better, the actual print ad for the show from the The Sun (Sept. 28, 1980) with other upcoming shows.

Painter's Mill Music Fair was a theater in the round, with seating for 2,400.  It opened in June, 1960 as a summer tent theater offering Broadway-style shows and Hollywood acts.

The theater's operators, Music Fair Inc., of Pennsylvania got rid of the tent in 1967 and built a year-round venue.

In January 1980, the operation of the theater was taken over by Maryland Theatrical, a company whose principals included two well-known local promoters, Richard Klotzman and Lee Silverman. The name was later changed to Painters Mill Star Theatre.

The last show of the decade was in December 1984.  The next month, a flood, blamed in part on the construction of Interstate 795, forced the theater to close, canceling several concerts.

In March of 1985, the Maryland attorney general's office begins an investigation of the theater after dozens of ticketholders
complain they cannot get refunds; it is revealed the theater owes over $200,000 in federal, state and local taxes, penalties and interest.  Klotzman ends up the target of a IRS investigation. I've included a couple of articles about him, too.

The theater remained empty for five years before reopening in 1990.  It was burned down in March 1991, when burglars used an acetylene torch to break open a safe in the manager's office. I've included an article about the fire.

While Klotzman and the fire don't have any direct connection to the Robert Palmer show, I found them of interest and figured maybe someone else might, too. 

The site is now occupied by a BJ's Wholesale Club.  The only trace of the venue is the street is still carries the name Music Fair Road.

This is a fresh digitization as of April 2024, right off off the original vinyl records.
Once again, the Voodoo Wagon solves a rock and roll mystery.  The Discogs listing reads, "This concert was recorded in November, 1979. Possibly on 11/14,15, or 16 based on the set list including “96 Tears...." 

The Voodoo Wagon Research Team...working from our secret headquarters, uncovered a picture of Rundgren from the January 5, 1980 issue of Billboard captioned, "Rundgren's concert from a Westchester, N.Y. performance is mixed for Jan. 1 broadcast on the new NBC radio network." 

That gives us the likely location.  Cross referencing location with tour calendar reveals the show was recorded at the Westchester Premiere Theatre, Tarrytown, NY on November 14, 1979.  That matches up with the Discogs dates sourced from the set list inclusion of "96 Tears."

Quod erat Voodoo-demonstrandum, folks.

Other things to note about this show:  It is LIKELY to be the second Source broadcast.  The boys in Research found proof of an earlier Santana concert with a broadcast window of December 14-15-16, 1979.  While most Source concerts would list a three day "broadcast window" covering the Friday/Saturday/Sunday weekend, this one only lists January 1-2 on the disc labels.  For the record, January 1 was Tuesday and you can probably figure out the 2nd was Wednesday.  

Also of note is that this show is TITLED. Most Source shows are given obvious designators: The Eddie Money Band Concert, the Robert Plant/Led Zeppelin Special, The Doors Profile.  But every so often, they sprinkle a little bit of promotional magic fairy dust and add a title to the discs, such as "War Is Declared - The U2 Concert" or "April Fixx Day."  Uh...yeah.  That first one is epic, the second is awful.  "Fixx" and "Fools" aren't homophones. 

But you get the point: THEY WERE TRYING TO TELL YOU THIS WAS A BIG DEAL when they added a name on the disc label.  The first broadcast by a new network in a new decade!  Are you ready for the Eighties?

We managed to track down a full page print ad from Radio & Records magazine promoting the show, two weeks prior to the syndicated broadcast.  The ad says the concert was "on more than 175 radio stations throughout the country."

You get: FLAC FILES OF WAVS!  300 DPI SCANS OF DISC LABELS AND CUE SHEET!  A COPY OF PRINT AD! YES!  PRINT AD!  COULD THIS BE MOST EXCITING BLOG POSTING OF YEAR?!  HULK...HULK SMASH!!

Johnette Napolitano has one of the most alluring & haunting voices in music. This offering is no exception. Teeming with her signature sultry voice, she engages and pulls you into the music. Highly recommend this CD, as it is very listenable & I caught myself continually wanting to increase the volume just a bit. It is just a touch different from her Concrete Blonde days, but still connected. She is an engaging & soulful performer.

Johnette has repeatedly proven that she can make music that is clever, thought provoking, beyond entertaining and just plain rockin'!! This album is no different and will make you wonder how so many talentless hacks can get so famous, while an artist with Johnette's raw talent, power and wisdom can go so underappreciated. Thank you Ms. Napolitano.

This historic Lyceum 7 May 1980 concert had air time in the U.S. courtesy of "The Source", a program put out by NBC since 1979, distributed via radio show LPs. Seventy minutes of the live Genesis are supplemented with the usual announcements and adverts. As with the Capital Radio broadcast, the Source presenter mistakenly quotes the venue as Drury Lane Theatre. Note: Follow You, Follow Me from this show was used on the official release Genesis - Three Sides Live.
