14. Westwood One Superstar Concert #05-07 Outro

As of July 4, 2004, the Westwood One Superstar Concert shows were cut down from a ninety minute show on two CDs to one hour on one Cd.  Show #05-07 is another grab bag of previously aired tracks sourced from 2002 and 2003, plus three new tracks from 2004.

The reduction in air time in 2005 also corresponds with the end of the King Biscuit Flower Hour.  Syndicated shows were in decline, fewer stations were carrying them. By 2007, the Westwood One cue sheets also have the note that the "files were available for download."  While the majority of the Westwood One shows were being sourced from previous years, this show is a good example of how new content continued to be released.

During the mid-80s, Westwood One print ads claimed the show was carried by 450 stations.  This gives us some idea of the number of copies pressed.  I don't know the number of shows in the 2000s, but the later years do not turn up on Ebay very often.

Also:  I am moving this comment from our reader, Rudolf Schmidt, into some posts to increase visibility:

"This seems like a good time to introduce my John Mellencamp live bootlegs archive:

Inspired by livepetty.com, I tried to create a site where the average joe looking for JM live recordings can find the best (IMO) versions without getting into all the minutiae we do here. Of course, most of my stuff is just draftervoi's stuff but I managed to add a few things. Hopefully, it will prevent a few people from paying to download the same recordings from greedy bootleggers. I remember reading a comment by someone who was tickled pink because he had just bought a copy of Mellencamp's 4 July 1992 concert on "audiophile vinyl".

This is sourced from a radio broadcast.  I checked EBAY and found an original radio disc with the cue sheet for sale.  As my recording has a bit of hiss, I considered putting in a bid, but someone bought it for the "Buy It Now" price.  I've included the image of the disc and cue sheet for reference.

As it's XMAS, I figured we needed a Christmas show here to put all of Our Beloved Voodoo Wagon Audience in a Holiday mood.

Flac files of wavs, comes with 300 dpi scans of the cue sheet, both disc labels, and reviews of the concert from the Daily Telegraph, the Observer, and the Guardian.

One of the things I'm trying to do for Our Beloved Voodoo Wagon Audience is find more than just the music.  I'm looking for concert ticket scans, posters, newspaper articles, tour passes...and if any of you run across anything and can email it to me, or post a link, or just tell me about it....I will greatly appreciate it.  Any new information will be added to the download...just last night, I found a full page Billboard ad for the '87 Huey Lewis show, so I dug up the file, tossed the pdf into the "artwork" folder and uploaded it again.  So, seriously...anything you guys run across and can share about these shows, please let me know!

Flac files of wavs, digitized December 2022 by you know who.  I had a version of this I'd downloaded as mp3, and it was good.. but had some surface snap, crackle, n' pops, and no disc labels, so I figured I'd do an "archival" version of the syndicated release, and share it with you.

Comes with 300 dpi scans of the cue sheet and both disc labels.  As an added bonus I tracked down a newspaper interview from the Guardian done in advance of the London show, and a review of a previous show in Birmingham.

Okay, gang, first of all, the stupid stuff.  If you look at the disc label scans, someone took a pencil and crossed out the large "A" on Side 2, and wrote in "B" next to it, as if the record has been misprinted with two "side a's."

The "A" is not an indication of which side of the record you're looking at, that's what "Side 1" and "Side 2" are trying to tell you and is clearly printed over there on the left.

The big "A" or "B" on a BBC Rock Hour LP has to do with the commercials.  On the "B" version of this, there's some difference in the commercials.

Other versions of this show are the BBC In Concert #312 transcription disc (LP), and the Classic In Concert #518 (CD, 1994)  Both of these were only issued to radio stations.  "Want You More," and "Looking For Clues" are missing from BBC Rock Hour #439 as compared to the two other BBC transcriptions.

The Hammersmith show was officially issued on At The BBC in 2010 by Spectrum Music in UK & Europe (but not here in the US of A, Canada, Australia...) with the two missing songs restored...plus two additional songs (Some Guys Have All The Luck, and Best of Both Worlds)...PLUS a 15th song (Johnny And Mary) which isn't from the Hammersmith show but from British television show Friday Night...Saturday Morning.  At The BBC is out of print but you can find copies on EBAY and Discogs.  That CD will have better sound than this vinyl extraction, but you'll miss out on the vintage commercials.

The one brand new copy of At The BBC available on Amazon as of this writing is set at $197.00, while a used copy can be had for $9.99 on EBAY.   So if you like this, track down a used copy at a reasonable price.  $197.00?  Jeepers, man, that's ridiculous.

CO 90 • 07 5     DBT KM
CO 90 • 07 6     DBT KM

No cue sheet.  300 dpi scans of all six disc labels.  I tracked down a Miami Herald newspaper article from September 2nd about Palmer, but didn't find a review of the concert.  I found a ticket scan from the show, and included backstage passes from the tour.

This is the same show as 88-24, and similar to CO 89-13 (which may swap out Riptide and replace it with Shoot The Moon...I can't confirm that as I don't have 89-13).  All three of these are 3 LP vinyl sets.  Show #04-28 is a shorter, one hour show, drawn from the same source with the tracks in a different order, and issued on CD.  I don't have that, either. There may be more, my list is not complete.

88-24 was in our archives, and readers may remember that there was a vinyl defect on my copy, causing a short noise on Every Kinda People.  I took 9/10ths of a second from 90-07 version and dropped it in EXACTLY, replacing the defective part of the 88-24 version of Every Kinda People, retagged the files, uploaded and updated the links. So..now we have two versions of the same show, but with different commercials. I took down the post in the archives and reposted the show.

The set list has covers of Jermaine Jackson (Tell Me I'm Not Dreamin'), Lee Dorsey (Sneakin' Sally Through The Alley), Cherelle (I Didn't Mean To Turn You On), Guy Lombardo & his Royal Canadians (Riptide), Inga Rumpf (Walk Beside Me), the Gap Band (Early In The Morning), Motorhead (Eat The Rich), and Moon Martin (Bad Case Of Lovin' You), plus two songs by the Power Station (Some Like It Hot and Communication).

The Motorhead and Inga Rumpf covers were never issued officially by Palmer.  Come to think of it....Has there ever been another show where Guy Lombardo AND Motorhead covers were in the same set list?

On the commercials...GREAT GOOGA-MOOGA, what a find! The fabulous Run DMC, hip-hoppin' for Miller Lite!  That alone makes this version worth having!

Robert Palmer / Superstar Concert #88-24 James L. Knight Center, Miami - September 7, 1988

Robert Palmer
Westwood One Superstar Concert Series Show #88-24
For Broadcast the weekend of October 28-30, 1988

Recorded at the

James L. Knight Center, Miami, FL, USA on September 7, 1988 from the Heavy Nova Tour

Repair added. Files retagged as of November 27, 2022.  I added a newspaper article, ticket scan, and backstage passes. Flac files of .wavs.  Includes 300 dpi scans of the cue sheet, and for the first time, ALL SIX DISC LABELS.

There was a 1/2 second long vinyl defect in Track 10 (Every Kind Of People) that I patched with .9 seconds of the exact same song, but from Superstar Concert 90-07.  That's the exact same show, but with a different set of commercials. If you listen carefully on headphones, you can hear the "center" of the vocal shift slightly, but it's nearly perfect.

I'm posting both shows.  The music is the same music, so you don't need both versions, unless (like me), you're a completist.  The original version of this was picked up and posted at several other sites.  If you've got one of those versions, I recommend this repaired version to you as a replacement.

On the introduction, Jeff Gonzer says, "At Farm Aid 2003 held in Columbus, Ohio, John took a page right out of Neil Young's book and featured music from his latest Trouble No More.  That album is Mellencamp's take on some vintage blues and folk songs.  And as with some Neil Young concerts of the past, many fans were left wanting to hear their favorites.  So with a little creative production,  we've combined his Farm Aid 2003 concert with his performance at Farm Aid 2002 to give you what you want."

What follows is three songs from 2002, three from 2003, two from 2002, three from 2003...then a song from 2001, not mentioned by Mr. Gonzer, and finally two songs from 2003.  Setlists.fm only lists five songs as played in 2003, and we've got eight on this set.  I checked Newspapers.com and found a clipping that reveals Mellencamp played nine songs, so we're only missing one song.

The clipping reveals the missing song as "To Washington," which (as per the Indianapolis Star's reporter) "characterized Bush as a leader who's quick to fight".  Gonzer didn't mention it, but they probably left that one on the cutting room floor to avoid political controversy.

The 2003 songs are noteworthy, as they're done in a different musical style than his "Arena Americana.".  As usual, he has excellent taste in cover songs, with Robert Johnson, Son House, Bob Dylan, and Howlin' Wolf in the set list.

You get:  300 dpit scans of the cue sheet, discs, and a copy of the Indianapolis Star's review of the 2003 show.

"Wilko Johnson has died. He passed away at home on Monday evening, 21 November 2022.

SADLY

R.I.P.

Always thought she was the secret weapon of the band. Not a music post here, but if you're not familiar with this song might I suggest you give it a listen. Hell I can even tolerate Stevie Nicks here. This song should have been HUGE.

Lou Reed - Wild Goin Wild *NOW BACK FROM THE DEAD THANKS TO THE BLOG THAT NOBODY READS

*BACK FROM THE DEAD FIRST PUBLISHED 8-2-19
*SPECIAL THANKS TO THE BLOG THAT NOBODY READS

So last Saturday was the second annual record show I sell at. Business was fantastic. I damn near did a grand in old vinyl and CD's that I no longer had a need for. Well..at said record show was a seller whom I have been dealing with for years. He specializes in boots. He told me he was getting out of selling his wares. Said there is no market for it anymore. But in the meantime I managed to cough up 200 dollars to buy his product. The whole time I was thinking of you and our blog sites. So all of my next posts will consist of stuff I bought from Mr. Boot Dealer. I'm sure some of these are on other sites but until you see me thanking the original poster these will all be my rips. So let's get started with a stereo soundboard recording of Sweet Lou from 2000. Great show here. Just turn it up a little. See scans

I'M GOING TO THE CAFE I HOPE THEY'VE GOT MUSIC AND I HOPE THEY CAN PLAY

The Penthouse / Omni Magazine College Rock Concert CC 1016
LW's Limited Broadcast Week of January 22, 1984
Recorded live at the Dominion Theatre, London, UK on October 23, 1983

01 Intro - Pete Larkin and Richard Skinner
02 African
03 Coming In Hot
04 Not Gonna Give It Up
05 Where You Gonna Run

07 Break
08 Glass House
09 Can't Blame The Youth/Dem Ha Fe Get a Beatin'/Babylon Queendom (Medley)
10 Johnny B. Goode
11 Mama Africa
12 Outro

Coming In Hot is listed on the cue sheet as Firing The Shot.

One of the songs was originally issued with two different names, it's Don't Blame The Youth, or Can't Blame The Youth.

A sharp-eyed reader spotted that this track (9) is actually a medley, and I've updated the track listing and retagged the files.  Or is that "sharp-eared?"  Either way, he picked up on the fact that the song is actually a medley of three songs: Can't Blame The Youth, Dem Ha Fe Get a Beatin', and Babylon Queendom.  I've retagged the file, updated the txt file, and uploaded it to reflect this new knowledge.

I'm awarding the very first Voodoo Wagon No-prize Award to Dan, for meritorious service to the cause of Voodoo Wagondom in catching my error.  The No-prize has no cash value, but is virtually priceless as it makes you the envy of everyone else in Our Beloved Audience.

The run out grooves get groovy with:
COLLEGE ROCK CONCERT #1016-A CC84-2
COLLEGE ROCK CONCERT #1016-B CC84-2

This the same show as BBC In Concert 318 (issued on LP), and also Classic In Concert 39 (issued on CD)  Both of these were issued only to radio stations.  The CD had a booklet listing the band members.  I've included a scan I found on Discogs.com..

The LW releases are often one or two songs shorter than the BBC transcription discs, but this release is identical across all three releases (BBC In Concert, Classic In Concert, and this release).
The tracks were released in 2012 in Europe as a bonus disc on Peter Tosh 1978-1987, a 6 CD compilation of Bush Doctor, Mystic Man,  Wanted Dread and Alive, Mama Africa, No Nuclear War and Captured Live.  This set also featured a disc of alternative versions (extended mixes, single edits), and a disc with this previously unreleased Dominion show.  The show has never been issued in the USA.  Obviously...if you like this, go track down and buy a copy of 1978-1987.

The Penthouse/Omni Magazine College Concert was produced by London Wavelength for five months from September 11, 1983 to February 12, 1984.  The show ran every week, with a 3 week holiday break from late December to mid January. The numbering was sequential, running 1000, 1001, 1002...1019, for a total of 19 shows.  Most were concert broadcasts, but at least three were interviews interspersed with released studio tracks. Six were repeats of prior London Wavelength shows from the BBC Rock Hour.
