A little Carla Bley after everything slows down, just what the soul needs to relax and enjoy the morning (or what's left of it) with a cup of coffee and a little morning smoke to help slow things down. The deer are laying in my back yard again this morning, I think I have been adopted as a sanctuary for hunting season. I lived in the country for 7 years never had a deer lay in my yard...now I live in the city of Pontiac and deer and turkey are in my yard all the time. Smarter than the average hunter they are lol! Yes 1974-1976:
Jon Anderson – lead vocals, guitars, percussion
Steve Howe – guitars, backing vocals
Chris Squire – bass, backing vocals
Alan White – drums, percussion, backing vocals
Patrick Moraz – keyboards

Gryphon 1974-1975:
Dave Oberlé – drums, percussion, lead vocals
Brian Gulland – bassoon, trombone, crumhorn, recorder, keyboards, vocals
Richard Harvey – recorder, crumhorn, mandolin, keyboards, vocals
Graeme Taylor – guitars, vocals, keyboards
Philip Nestor – bass, vocals (on 1974 dates)
Malcolm Bennett – bass, flute  (on 1975 dates known since 1989 as Malcolm Markovich)

JustDave's Notes:
- A huge debt of gratitude goes out to Sam Elliot's Mustache for sending me the CD-rs of his personal reels to The Collective for encoding.
- A big thank you goes out to my fellow members of The Collective Of Live Music for their help, support and inspiration

Known Faults:
- "Roundabout" is missing from this version of the show but is on the DVD-A version of the Discrete 4-Channel Quad Reels.
- Due to the equipment of the era there is an audible hum from thhe amplifiers on stage.

Recording Notes:
- The encore, "Roundabout", is missing from this version of the show, however we do get three songs from Gryphon's Boston Garden set.
- "Ritual (Nous Sommes du Soleil)" is also missing from this version of the show as in all versions but the audience recording and a matrix of Wolfgang's streaming version of Yes' set.
- The recording of "Roundabout" on the circulating versions may be from the Wolfgang's Vault streaming version as well.

Editing Notes:
- Ripped the CD-rs with Exact Audio Copy to wave 16bit/44,1khz.
- Used Goldwave to edit some track marks and seperate the Bill Minkin voiceover tracks from the music tracks.
- Used Trader's Little Helper to encode the wave files to flac level 8 and align any sector boundary errors.

Other Notes:
- Recording Date, Broadcast Date and Show Number Info From http://www.eclipse67.com/kbi.htm a great fan generated database on King Biscuit Flower Hower, BBC Presents and British Biscuit broadcasts.
- The only recordings of this Yes line-up are the studio album Relayer and any live concert recordings from 1974-1976.
- The Relayer album was written and recorded by Anderson, Howe, Squire & White before Patrick Moraz joined the band. Moraz had to write his keyboard parts around the already recorded guitar and bass tracks. Usually a band writes with the keyboards in mind but without doing that and having Moraz write and record his parts afterward resulted in a very dense sounding record. Also Steve Howe was using a newly adopted, very agressive guitar style for this album which influenced Squire and White to play more agressively too. This resulted in a very heavy album as well as the dense sound.
- A personal note, this is my favorite album from Yes to this day due to this dense and heavy sound quality.
- Gryphon was on their first tour in the United States. They toured 1974-1975 as the opening act for the Yes Relayer tour.
- Gryphon replaced bass player Philip Nestor with Malcolm Bennett in 1975 while still touring The United States with Yes.
- The studio version of Gryphon's second song "Midnight Mushrumps" is 19 minutes, the band just peforms the last 7 minutes of the track at this show.
- The studio version of the Gryphon song "Checkmate" is 10 minutes in length but Gryphon only performs a 4 minute version.
- The Gryphon set in Pre-FM has not surfaced in Trading Circles until now. The only recording to surface is a streaming version on Wolfgang's Vault. The Collective of Live Music is proud to finally liberate this "lost recording"!!

Encoded By JustDave For The Collective Of Live Music

I have DVD-As of some King Biscuit Flower Hour Discrete Quadraphonic Reels that I downloaded from The Trader's Den. I have encoded this one in Quadraphonic and Stereo Formats. Foobar2000 and VLC Media Player can play Quadraphonic files, Foobar2000 may need an additional plug in for Quad (I can't remember).

This version of the show has the encore "Roundabout" but is still missing "Ritual (Nous Sommes du Soleil)". There is an audience and Wolfgang's Vault audio stream matrix in trade circles that has "Ritual (Nous Sommes du Soleil)" but as of yet I do not have that version.

I separated the Quad flac into 2 downloads due to size each part opens independently. I did this because MEGA can sometimes stall on large files.

Ten songs were released on VHS as The Liberty Concert. The final song (a cover of "Hot Fun In The Summertime") is not here. I need to look into whether it was broadcast. It is on the VHS tape.

JustDave's Notes:
- A BIG Thank You to my associates in The Collective Of Live Music for help and insperation.
- Thank You to Draftervoi for the research he did on Asleep At The Wheel Live From Gilley's Show #LG-89-01.

Known Faults:
- Westwood One packs over 50 minutes of music and commercials on 2 sides of vinyl making for groove crowding.
- Groove crowding can cause needle damage to the vinyl causing more pops, snaps & needle noise or rumble.
- The crowd applause on Live From Gilley's recordings can sound like pops and crackles sometimes, this has always bugged me but I have never noted it before the encoding of this show.
- There was a skip in the only Campbells Soup commercial that could not be fixed, a substitute commercial was used.

Recording Notes:
- There was no show promo on the record, it seems to be that by 1987 they quit including them and Jim Duncan would just tell you at the end of the program who was coming the next week.

Editing Notes:
- A Zerostat Positive Ion gun was used on LP prior to playback.
- A carbon fiber record brush, then a microfiber disc cleaner was used on the record prior to playback.
- Records hand cleaned with Record Research Lab Super Record Wash before playback.
- LP cleaned with the HumminGuru Ultrasonic Vinyl Record Cleaning System prior to playback.
- Raw transfer: EQ off, treble and bass levels set at +/- zero for most accurate sound of LP.
- Turntable balanced: Needle Tracking, Azimuth Set: Needle Pressure Digitally Dialed In:
- Soundcard stereo field maximized
- Goldwave always set to record while filtering any offset.
- Recording and all editing done in 24bit/96khz.
- Preservation being key the show is encoded complete with commercials and voiceovers.
- Declicked manually and some noise reduction used depending on what best served situation.
- A high pass filter with an initial cut off of 50hz and static steepness of 2 was used to ease rumble caused by the tight grooves on the album.
- A Campbells Soup commercial from a Gene Watson 1987 broadcast was used to replace the Campbells Soup commercial that skipped on this record.

Other Notes:
- This same concert has been broadcast by Westwood One at least 3 times. As Live From Gilley's #LG-86-05 and as Live From Gilley's #LG-85-12. All with the same setlist just different commercials.
- Draftervoi determined that the concert was from a 1985 appearance by Asleep At The Wheel since the concert was first aired January of 1986. Also songs in the set come from the 1985 album but no later. More clues to the show being before 1986 are: singer Chris O'Connell left the band in 1986, fiddle player Larry Alvin Franklin joined in the band in 1985, piano player "Professor" Tim Alexander joined in 1985.
- Draftervoi found an advertisement for Asleep At The Wheel for a November 29, 1985 concert that has been included in a folder called Press.

I ripped the waves with DVD Audio Extractor. I then used Goldwave to re-edit some track marks and even out the volume and raise the volume level. Traders Little Helper was used to encode the waves to MP3 320kbps since the DVD had lossy audio.

There was a few spots in the broadcast where the stream stopped, this is found on every source that I have found. These rough spots are few in number and do not take away from the listening pleasure of this recording.

A great performance from Lyle Mays and his band. The Pat Metheny Group's keyboardist playing with a fabulous Sextet including one of my favorite sax players Joe Lovano. Everyone who follows Pat Metheny has a good idea how this group may sound. Though this Sextet doesn't use the exact same tone and timbre of The Pat Metheny Group, Lyle May's talent in such musical areas are clearly on display. The solo piano in "Mars" is example enough of Lyle's talents.

I just got this show a few weeks ago and it is the reason I reposted 2 other Lyle Mays boots. An FM broadcast from the Lyle Mays Quartet's 1992 Umeå Jazzfestival appearance. The other is the Power Station Demos for Lyle Mays 1st album. Sorry today's Jazz On Sunday is just from a single artist. Lucky for all it's someone as talented as the late Lyle Mays

Lyle Mays passed away February 10, 2020 after a long illness, he was 66. So for our Jazz offerings this round of uploads, we have the 1986 Demos from the making of Lyle's eponymously titled first solo album. For those who may not know, Lyle Mays was the keyboardist co-founder of The Pat Metheny Group. Lyle co-wrote with Pat Metheny on almost all of their recorded output. It was the playing of Bill Evans, Chick Corea & Herbie Hancock that inspired the keyboard legend to play Jazz. By 14 years old Lyle was playing organ at his church. In his lifetime Lyle was nominated for 23 Grammys, he won 10. These demos sound pretty damn good and are a great look at the making of a fabulous album.

From the Retirement Sucks Tour, Geezer still in the line-up but would leave again. Dean Castronovo would also split. I always love hearing Ozzy songs with Geezer on bass. Bob Daisley writes some good stuff no denying, but I am sorry I love Geezer's playing that much more. He plays around with the riff on anything he plays. He doesn't seem to change Bob's riffs much. I like Dean Castronovo's druming too. His playing on Ozmosis is great but his playing on Geezer's G//Z/R debut Plastic Planet that really impressed me.

G//Z/R was an Industrial Death Metal band that also featured Burton C. Bell of Fear Factory on vocals. I saw them play live on a very short promo tour. When they started playing their first song plaster fell from the theater's ceiling. A mosh pit broke out then parted as a stage diver was in mid air. He got up after landing on my friend who was drunk and passed out in the pit. Me and another from our group picked up our buddy and put him in the car for safe keeping then quickly heading back in. After the show I stopped at the merch table to buy a shirt. Behind the table was Geezer's wife, sitting next to her was Geezer. I asked for an autograph and he gave it, then handed me a clip board and says "Now gimme your's". It was the mailing list, so I signed up. Every month for 2 years I received a hand written note from Mrs. Butler and a sheet detailing what was going on with Geezer's solo project. When Burton C. Bell left to go back to Fear Factory the fan club got a request for demo tapes for auditions to replace Bell. I sent mine because hey why not? I received a hand written letter from Geezer thanking me for my submission but....he was going with Clark Brown. I don't care I got a hand written rejection letter from Geezer....Other musicians understand lol!!!

Man, I love this band! One of those "should have been bigger" bands. One of the best actually. To think of melding the Southern Rock swagger of Lynyrd Skynyrd with the Hard Rock/Pop sensibility of Grand Funk Railroad. I have a show where the band performs fabulous versions of Skynyrd's "On The Hunt" and Grand Funk's "Walk Like A Man". Okay I already hear the questions "will you post that show?" Sure I'll post it soon within the next few days. Rosebud and I both have been enjoying this Milwaukee Summerfest recording lately so it is being posted first. Truthfully I actually thought I had already posted the other. We do have a few other Cry Of Love shows posted on the blog here for your enjoyment and all the links should be live.

Alright now to freak everyone out a little bit I will be posting a show from someone there might have been doubts that I would like. To surprise some, I grew up in Detroit so I like a lot of Soul, R & B, and Funk. Growing up in the 1970s, when you learned what music to play when the lights went off, Barry White was quick to mind. Right there with Marvin Gaye, Teddy Pendergrass et al. Barry White was required Mood Music. I was a teen in the early 1980s so a lot of my girlfriends would put on Air Supply as "kissing music". If you put on some Marvin, Teddy P. or Barry White you might get all the way to....second base, come on we were kids then, LOL!!

OK now this is kind of a rarity, an FM broadcast from Paul Carrack's first recording outfit Ace. Ace of course had a pretty big hit with the Paul Carrack written and sung "How Long". The song hit #3 in The USA, #3 in Canada and #20 in The UK. The song is still played by Paul on his solo tours. The song is also still in play on the so called "Classic Rock" radio stations. Their second and last charting single was 1975's "Time For Another" hit #71 in The USA failing to chart any where else. The band folded in 1977. Paul Carrack, Terry Comer and Fran Byrne spent some time with Frankie Miller's band. Paul Carrack also spent some time in Roxy Music before moving on to Squeeze. While in Squeeze, Carrack sang lead vocal on the bands single "Tempted" which hit Billboards Mainstream Rock Charts at #8. The bands biggest USA hit single. Paul of course went on to sing for Mike Rutherford's Mike & The Mechanics, where the hits continued. Paul Carrack still enjoys a successful solo career playing all those hits and more.

JustDave's Notes:
- Thank you to My fellow members of The Collective Of Live Music for help and inspiration.
- This one is dedicated to my Dad who made me a Dionne Warwick fan when I was very young. Miss you Dad, listening to this, I'm go back to being in the backseat of your 1965 Ford Galixie.

Known Faults:
- There were a few volume fluctuations where it would increase in volume considerably that had to be evened out.
- A few very small inperfections in the vinyl which caused a few pops in this otherwise Near Mint 40 year old piece of vinyl.
- This is a vinyl record, some vinnyl noises may have been missed during the editing process or left due to removing the noise would make a worse problem.

Recording Notes:
- There is a locked groove show promo at the end of side 4. It was ecoded and included.
- The first 3 songs run together in a medley of Dionne Warwick's 1960s - 1970s catolog

Editing Notes:
- A Zerostat Positive Ion gun was used on LPs prior to playback.
- A carbon fiber record brush, then a microfiber disc cleaner was used on the records prior to playback.
- Records hand cleaned with Record Research Lab Super Record Wash before playback.
- LPs cleaned with the HumminGuru Ultrasonic Vinyl Record Cleaning System prior to playback.
- Raw transfer: EQ off, treble and bass levels set at +/- zero for most accurate sound of LP.
- Turntable balanced: Needle Tracking & Azimuth Set: Needle Pressure Digitally Dialed In.
- Soundcard stereo field maximized.
- Goldwave always set to record while filtering any offset.
- Recording and all editing done in 24bit/96khz.
- Preservation being key the show is encoded complete with commercials and voiceovers.
- Declicked manually and some noise reduction used depending on what best served situation.

Other Notes:
- Dionne Warwick introduces the song "Love At Second Sight" as her favorite song from the album. The song is from her 2nd album of 1985 called Friends. Friends was released November of 1985.

JustDave's Notes:
- As always a big Thank You to my fellow members of The Collective Of Live Music.

Known Faults:
- Pressing fault Side 2 during "Sunday Papers" gives the song a low thump-thump-thump sound.
- At the beginning of Side 2 the right channel is silent for .03 seconds since the left channel was too different from the right in sound to use as a patch, the drop out was left alone. Why make an odd sound to cover another odd sound?.

Recording Notes:
- Concert is hosted but like all other shows in the Westwood One Concerts & Specials the host doesn't identify himself.
- This concert has been released by Westwood One at least 3 times; Westwood One In Concert 83-02-X for air January 28, 1983: Westwood One Concerts & Specials PC-83-3 for air January 31, 1983: Joe Jackson/Concrete Blonde In Concert: New Rock 93-32 for air the week of August 2, 1993.
- The Westwood One In Concert 83-02-X has the most songs but is missing "Breaking Us In Two". Westwood One Concerts & Specials PC-83-3 has "Breaking Us In Two" but is missing "Target", "T.V. Age", "Beat Crazy", "Got The Time", "A Slow Song" and "I'm The Man". Joe Jackson/Concrete Blonde In Concert: New Rock 93-32 is missing "On The Radio", "Another World", "Fools In Love", "Target", "T.V. Age", "Got The Time", "A Slow Song" and the set list is in a completely different order.

Editing Notes:
- A Zerostat Positive Ion gun was used on LPs prior to playback.

- Declicked manually and some noise reduction used depending on what best served situation.

Other Notes:
- Joe Jackson Orpheum Theater, Boston, Massachusetts December 9, 1982 date listed on onamrecords.com, also on etree.com, setlist.fm, concertarchives.org, jj-archive.net, also discogs for the Westwood One In Concert record
- During the A cappella version of "Is She Really Going Out With Him?" the second time Joe sings "Look over there.." the audience screams "Where?" loud enough to make Joe miss his next line.
