About 4 or 5 inches of snow has fallen this week. It's snowing right now and everything out back looks so peaceful as I sit here drinking my morning coffee. This show from quite a few years ago is playing on the stereo. One of my favorite Jazz Fusion outfits playing on yet another program usually reserved for Rock and it's many off shoots. So many Metal Heads I know are into Return To Forever, it would amaze you. Most say it's for the guitar playing no matter which guitar player is in the group. My guitarist in Psychosis said it was for the song writing. My bass player of course said it was for Stanley Clarke. I have to agree with my guitarist that it's for the song writing. This remaster is a great example of the awesome live performances that also made Return To Forever a favorite of many....

justdave's notes Audio Rip:
I ripped the waves with DVD Audio Extractor. I then used Goldwave to raise the volume and add a faed out/fade in at the beginning and end of the show. No EQ or Noise reduction was used. The DVD had lossy audio so I used Traders Little Helper to encode the waves to MP3 320kbps.

justdave's notes on DVD:
I downloaded the MKV file from the net. I then used Nero 2015 Platinum to make chapter, a menu, and encode the MKV to a DVD. Really pleased with how well this DVD turned out.

Wish I had the lossless version of this one to share with you, it's such a great show! Stanley Clarke's playing in the 20 minute Vulcan Worlds is enough to make a lot of bass players lay the instrument done and walk away! The band is in fine form, this is an absolute must have recording (yep I know I say that a lot)

Great set that includes the at the time unreleased "Overture". The track would later be recorded by The Chick Corea Elektric Band. The new Al Di Meola track "The Phantom" would also be played on this tour, unfortunately not at this show. The song would be recorded later for Al Di Meola's Kiss My Axe album.

More Spanish Guitar flavored Jazz from the master Al Di Meola. Al's step away from the electric guitar came from necessity. He has suffered hearing damage from playing at loud volumes and has tinnitus. The acoustic guitar gives him less discomfort than an electric. Al's style of playing was a huge influence on the Heavy Metal genre, influencing many Shredders like Yngwie Malmsteen, Steve Vai, and James Murphy (Death, Testament, Obituary, Konkra) who recorded a version of Di Meola's "Race with Devil on Spanish Highway" on his solo album. This recording is highly recommended for all lovers of guitar driven music, Jazz, Metal, Rock or other.

Great recording from the 2008 reunion of the "classic" line-up of Return To Forever. Really wish I had the lossless files for this show to share with you, but I have not been able to locate a lossless source. This tour was documented on the Returns live CD and the Return To Forever Returns: Live At Montreux DVD. Even if you have those releases you need this recording as well.

The second of our Sunday Morning Jazz offerings is a pretty special recording. This is the first live performance of Return To Forever with guitarist Al Di Meola. Guitarist Bill Conners had left to pursue a solo career, Detroit native Earl Klugh was brought in to cover some of the gigs. Earl Klugh had to go back to Detroit for some personal reasons and the guitarist spot was once again empty. A friend of Chick Corea's gave him a tape of 19 year old Al Di Meola and insisted he listen to the tape. Al and the group then had 4 days to practice the material for this gig. They sound great. Also some of the songs played on this night were played in front of an audience for the first time. Highly recommended!

A nice sounding recording, and great performance from early in Al's career. Al's playing has had a big influence on the world of Heavy Metal, as well as Jazz. Instrumental Heavy Metal guitarists such as Steve Vai, James Murphy, Alex Skolnick, and Joe Satriani continuously name Al Di Meola as well as Frank Zappa as being a key influence on their style.
