justdave's notes:
I ripped the waves with DVD Audio Extractor. I then used Goldwave to edit track marks, adjust the volume of all tracks to be uniform, add fade outs/ins and cross fades. No EQ or noise reduction was used. The DVD had lossy audio so I encoded the waves to MP3 320kbps with Trader's Little Helper.

The recording shows a little age, and maybe a couple generations, not so much that it is unlistenable though. I never thought I would find a soundboard recording of Grim Reaper. Finding a Pro-Shot DVD from the only tour I caught them on was far from my mind. I heard of Grim Reaper through Hit Parader magazine. There was an add for See You In Hell. You could send a stamped self addressed envelope for the to send you a floppy sampler of Grim Reaper & White Wolf. The floppy record had snippets of "See You In Hell" & "Dead On Arrival" plus 2 unmemorable tunes by White Wolf. The floppy came with mail order info so I bought See You In Hell. I bought all the Grim Reaper releases, along with Helloween & Armored Saint. When I heard they were touring together I had to see them. It was awesome, this Metal Head was in Heaven.

As we continue to pay Tribute To Rosebud's Favorite Singers, we have to mention Brad Delp of Boston. Boston would have sounded so different if Brad Delp never sang for them. His voice is just so perfect for the aural assault imagined by Tom Scholz. The "Boston Sound" was layer upon layer of multi-tracked guitars and vocals to give a full and polished studio sound. They sought to recreate this sound on stage. With Tom Scholz's custom built amps & effects they were pretty successful.

I can remember the first time I heard Boston. I came home from school, went to my room to do my home work. I turned on my stereo and hit FM while I looked through my albums for something to say yeah pick me. I grabbed my copy of The Doors 13, a great compilation, and started to put it on when I heard the start of "Foreplay/Long Time". I was blown away to say the least. After hearing the organ in that medley I put away The Doors and threw on Uriah Heep's Greatest Hits. I had to hear Ken Hensley make his organ growl, howl and scream after that. I went out and bought Boston's 1st album with my saved allowance money. I caught them live on the Don't Look Back Tour. They kicked ass live. I can't remember who opened for them either. They were that kind of live band though, so damn good you would forget who ever played with them that night. Rosebud never caught the band live unfortunately, with this show in her collection at least she can hear them!

justdave's notes:
Alleged European only live LP released by Blue Öyster Cult. It's not being sold on the bands website or listed. There is some pretty bad fluctuations in the sound during "Dominance And Submission". The bass goes in and out of the mix, sounding real bad when it comes in. I actually find it hard that this was actually marketed by Blue Öyster Cult. The label says that Sandy Pearlman was Executive Producer and it was released on the Castle Communications label. It sounds like a un-mixed soundboard recording to me. The soundman seems to be having a hard time with mixing the bass through out the recording. I am not saying it is a bad listen, it's not. It's actually a nice listen.

It is also out of print so I figured I would post it here. I have a few more out of print live albums that I will be posting. This is the 1st of a series.

Long Misty Days is a great album and I was pretty excited to find these demos at The Traders Den. When I received this show in flac from a Trader, it was in Japanese. I had to decode the flacs and re-encode them. My computer could not play them in Japanese. I renamed the files but still could not play them until I decoded then re-encoded the flac files.

For our next post of our Tribute To Rosebud's Favorite Singers is another from Steve Perry & Journey. Yet again live in Tokyo, Japan. Jonathan Cain is now in the line up, becoming a key song writer. Jonathan Cain would co-write every song released by Journey from the Escape album to Trial By Fire. He actually wrote more songs than Neal Schon in this period. For those that love this period of Journey you'll love this hit filled show.

The next installment of Rosebud's Salute To Here Favorite Singers we have Steve Perry with Journey. This recording is after the departure of drummer Aynsley Dunbar but before Greg Rolie's departure (pun unintended JD). The addition of Steve Perry came with a change in sound that some early fans were not happy with. The shift from Progressive Rock leaning instrumentals to Arena Rock Anthems brought bigger sales and hits.

Steve Perry made his live debut with Journey October of 1977. The next 10 years would be a whirlwind of bigger hits, bigger sales and bigger tours. With Greg Rolie leaving the band after one more studio album and tour. He would pick his own replacement while on that tour. The opening act was The Babys (I saw that tour in Detroit, the show was awesome JD), and their keyboard player Jonathan Cain was auditioning without even knowing. With Cain onboard, the music went even further away from their original sound. Some fans, myself included, decided it was time to jump ship. Others, like Rosebud, carried on with every shift the band made.

After Greg Rolie left the sets no longer featured songs from the earlier Progressive period of the band. The hits would still roll in...

Our Tribute To Progressive Rock continues with another British Progressive Rock Collective Camel. Camel is another band counted in the Canterbury Scene blending Folk, Classical, Rock, and Jazz into a sound sometimes called Symphonic-Prog-Rock. The songs are largely instrumental, when not lyrics deal with Fantasy and even the world of comic book heroes.

This line-up of Camel never recorded a studio album, and from my research I do believe no live recordings have been officially released either. Well we just have to take care of that ourselves then. Thankfully we can with this double CD FM broadcast recording from San Jose California. The tape shows a little age but is a great listening experience.

As I said this line-up of Camel never recorded a studio or live album. This line up was a transitional one after the departure of founding keyboardist Peter Bardens. Peter was "replaced" by Dave Sinclair & Jan Schelhaas both having been in Caravan. Both did however play on the 1978 Breathless album which was the last to feature Bardens. So Thank You goes to the unknown taper of this great show!

Odin is yet another Progressive Rock band from England. Not sure how these guys didn't make it bigger than they did. They only recorded one album which was released in 1971. So live recordings  from the band are going to be very rare. We're pretty lucky that this show was shared on the net. Here the bands set is made up of 2 Frank Zappa covers, a Brian Auger song and one Untitled track which I do believe is an original. The band is tight and does a great job with the chosen material. I would say if you like Prog-Rock or Frank Zappa this ones a must have.

I ripped the waves with DVD Audio Extractor. I then used Goldwave to adjust a few track markings. I also raised the volume a little. No use of noise reduction, EQ or remixing of the audio was done. The DVD had lossy audio so using Trader's Little Helper, I encoded the waves to MP3 320kbps.

Another show from Whitesnake for Rosebud's Tribute To Her Favorite Singers. This one is from the 1980's Hair Metal era that most of their America fans know of. I like this era of the band but for me I like it more when David Coverdale sings in his proper range (He forced his voice to hit notes it shouldn't be reaching for. He ended up paying for that later as his voice started to give out on tours). Rosebud & I have caught only one Whitesnake show together and this was late in the 1990's and Dave's voice sounded real good. He didn't hit the real high notes on some songs but sounded real good on all the material. This boot is a great addition to your Whitesnake collction

Rosebud's Salute To Her Favorite Singers keeps moving on with a show from David Coverdale and Whitesnake. Rosebud was already a fan of Whitesnake's 1980's output when I met her. From me she learned of Whitesnakes more Bluesy Hard Rock of their early records. She also learned about the Deep Purple MKIII era from me. She fell in love with the sound of Glenn Hughes & David Coverdale's vocal trade off. Burn is now on her list of favorite albums. This recording from Dave and The 'Snakes comes after the release of the Snakebite EP (not released in the USA). The EP was actually Whitesnake's official debut release. Coverdale's first 2 LP's were solo albums with The White Snake Band as his backing band. This is a great look at David Coverdale's career after leaving Deep Purple. The band's sound is a little far from the Platinum Selling 1980's Hair Metal Monster that it would become.

Music & Laughter, what could be better. That's exactly what this recording offers. There is Great Holiday Music combined with the wit of vocalist Clare Teal. Rosebud & I Love Christmas, when our children were young we went all out with the decorations. The decorating has tamed a little, we still have a tree, I still put a little village under the tree. My daughter has carried on that tradition with her family. It started with my Grandfather. Every year his village was bigger and more elaborate. We would buy him pieces for his village for Christmas all the time. They would always be incorporated into the village the next year. All us grandkids have a village under our trees. Every year my Mom and all her brothers and sisters would bring all their kids to my Grandparents one bedroom apartment in the hood for Christmas. Family, we were taught real young, is all you have or need to get through life so our family has always been tight.

Now the family get together has to happen at a hall because our family has grown so big. All 20 of the original grandchildren, have kids who have kids. My cousin Teresa has 23 kids. She had 3 of her own then became a foster parent and adopted every child that was brought to her home. They all now have at least 2 kids, and that is just one cousin. It's a large family, but every young child still gets a present. Santa brings them in to be passed out. Everyone always has plenty to eat, with more to take home. The Christmas tree always has a village. It gets bigger every year.

Everyone who follows the blog knows I love Jazz bands playing songs from non-Jazz songwriters. Jazz Guitarist Bill Frisell has worked with his present quartet for long enough that they didn't figure out the arraignments to the songs before entering the studio. As Bill Frisell said in an interview they "..just went for it." The album they were recording was All We Are Saying ... A Tribute To The Music Of John Lennon. The songs, though arraigned for a Jazz Quartet, are not unrecognizable. The band let the melodies of the original songs guide the arrangement. I think lovers of John Lennon solo and Beatles material will love this show, so download it, it's not a Jazzy Freak out. Jazz lovers that doesn't mean this is Muzak. It's Bill Frisell, enough said......

Fields Of The Nephilim was the first Gothic Rock band a Heavy Metal Head would say if you asked him to name one. Now it's Type O Negative or Fields Of The Nephilim (most Metal Heads kind of avoid the Goth music scene). The music of course was stylistically very different. This soundboard recording features the original line up of Fields on tour promoting their 2nd release album The Nephilim. 8 of the albums 9 tracks are presented in a 14 track set. The band is firing on all cylinders here. 3 years later the original line-up of the band would break up. Carl McCoy would later resurrect the name in 2000, releasing a new single. Not one original member was in the band for the album the came shortly after. Original bassist Tony Pettitt has had an in and out and in and out relationship with the new Fields Of The Nephilim line up. Anyway to hear the original Fields Of The Nephilim live we have a show for you

Opeth is one of my favorite bands. They have gone through some changes in their career musically, like all Progressive Rock/Metal bands do. Some of Opeth's original fans (myself included) dislike the fact that the Death Metal vocals have been completely stricken form the newer music. I however still love the band and have loved every musical change Mikael has taken Opeth's fans on. I mean they still play the old stuff live too so no harm done. The music is still a complex combination of styles.

This CD was given as a promo CD with every copy of Rock Hard Magazine #292-9/2011. The official studio track from Opeth's album Heritage has been removed. So enjoy some free professionally recorded and mixed Progressive Metal. There are 15 more Opeth shows on the site. If you would like more Opeth music click here.

With the people of the state of Georgia having been thrust into the world spotlight because of American politics I figure everyone is in need of a Big F#%king Joint! This awesome performance from Les Claypool & Sean Lennon's Psychedelic Progressive Rock project is perfect accompaniment for sitting back and floating. It's perfect that they are playing Georgia's Sweetwater 420 Fest, on 4/21 no less (if I have to explain the being late joke you have never smoked). Les & Sean do apologize for their tardiness. The bands set is peppered with some great covers. King Crimson's "The Court Of The Crimson King", Pink Floyd's "Astronomy Domine", The Who's "Boris The Spider", all from their EP Lime and Limpid Green. The set also includes The Beatles "Tomorrow Never Knows" which the band has not recorded or released.

If you missed it we have 1 more show from The Claypool Lennon Delirium. The bands performance which includes a cover of "Up On The Roof" by The Fearless Flying Frog Brigade at The Outside Lands Music Festival from 2016 click this link.

This is some great Progressive Psychedelic/Space Rock, so now everyone with me...headphones on, press play, light up and meet me in the Cosmic Akashic Wave.

Alright to continue my Salute To Progressive Rock we have It Bites from Cumbria, England. It Bites may be a controversial choice for Prog-Rock Purists. The band combines a sort of Power Pop vocal, verse big chorus style, with solo sections filtered through a John Abercrombie, John McLaughlin play book. There is also the touch of Heavy Metal/Hard Rock in the music that should make It Bites fit well with Porcupine Tree fans. That's almost a good way to describe It Bites but of course the best way is to see for yourself is to download the show. By the way I really recommend this band.

The Flac, being 24bit makes for a great listen and a Audio DVD ready wave file. It also makes a large download so I split it in 2 parts. All parts unzip separately.

This weeks installment of Rosebud's Salute To Her Favorite Singers brings us 2 from Elvis Presley. For the 2 of us Elvis was among the first records we owned. Personally I was a huge Elvis fan from a young age. Elvis records out numbered a lot of bands in my collection back then. I looked forward to the summer when a local channel would have an Elvis Movie Week. For my birthday one year I unwrapped a copy of Elvis' Separate Ways LP, that had an autographed birthday card from Elvis to me. My Aunt had somehow swung this when Elvis' last tour had come through Michigan. I still have that card in my memorabilia collection with the rest of the autographs I collected over the years. Right next to Alice Cooper (signed copy of Alice Cooper's 1st Comic Book), all 4 members of Fear Factory (Ozzfest Ticket), Max Cavalera of Soulfly (CD insert from 1st album Soulfly), Nergal & Orion of Behemoth (back of my Still Satanic Tour Shirt), Charlie Martin of The Silver Bullet Band (flyer from a Christmas show Charlie sang at), Lord Worm vocalist of the Death Metal band Crytopsy (limited edition of Once Was Not CD).

This brings the total of Elvis shows on The New JDP to 6. To see the rest including 2 Christmas collections just click here or the Elvis Presley link to the right of the posts. All Elvis Presley shows are now back on line.

When we pay Tribute To Rosebud's Favorite Singers we have to include another fav that her and I share, Elvis Presley. Elvis really helped to make Rock & Roll acceptable enough for white American parents to hate but tolerate. Before that the representatives of Rock & Roll, the architects and innovators, where black. It was not okay for Fats Domino to be black and ruin little Johnny's mind. Now a nice white boy from Tupelo is quite a different story. Before Elvis, the records were not even tolerated in the house, now they allowed their kids to watch Elvis on Sullivan while they parentally expounded on the dangers of that sexual swagger.

Elvis helped to clear the debris and pave the way for The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. More dirtier white boys than he, they too were allowed in the house. Soon came a time when we welcomed Otis Redding, The Temptations and The Four Tops. Polite talking, suit wearing, men of color who sang about the sweetness and pain of love. Then came James Brown, wearing his sexuality as a neon sign as Little Richard had before him. This time it was allowed in the house. James had helped to bring it full circle.

Chuck Berry, Little Richard are just as important to the development and popularization of Rock & Roll as the others mentioned in this narrative as those mentioned and not. Elvis was declared the King Of Rock & Roll. This at one time was used by both whites and blacks as a symbol of the racism ingrained in this country. A point that no one can successfully argue against if you look at the evidence. I however have always saw it differently and I offer this different narrative here. I see it as an example of the power of music to bring people of all color together. Jazz and Blues in the 1920's brought colored musicians into the white clubs. Rock & Roll and Blues brought the white kids to the black clubs in the 1950's. One of those country boys fell in love with that music. His dream was to perform the music he loved. Some record company people saw this as a chance to make money (of course). Rock & Roll ended up conquering the world. We haven't conquered racism yet, but I believe in the power of music to help bring us all together in the end.

I ripped the audio with DVD Audio Extractor. I then used Goldwave to re-edit some track marks and to double the volume. No EG or noise reduction used. No remixing or remastering done. The waves were lossy so using Traders Little Helper I encoded them to MP3 320kbps.

I am a Stanley Clarke fanatic, love his playing. He's the kind of bass player that makes others lay down their instrument and bow. Just to watch him play is amazing. The way he holds his hand looks like he's making duck shadow puppets not playing bass. The most amazing sounds come from that duck shadow puppet plucking hand. When you have Mother Pluckers like Victor Wooten, Marcus Miller, Les Claypool, Flea, and Bootsy Collins calling you an influence, you are good at what you do. Anyway I digress a lot. Combine the Legendary Stanley Clarke with the very talented, criminally underrated drummer from The Police Stewart Copeland with 2 young highly talented young players, what do you get? A hell of a concert that's what! A lot of Rockers want to try playing Jazz. A lot of them do try it. A lot of them suck at it. The 3 members of The Police have all stretched out in Jazz. All 3 of them, according to the shows I possess, have done it very well. Sure it's Stanley Clarke playing another solo in the middle of "No Mystery". Every other performance on this tape is just as good!

Keith Jarrett piano

Keith Jarrett solo on the piano in front of a live audience. I love listening to that. Keith Jarrett had 2 strokes in 2018. One in February then another in May. Since recovering Keith can only play piano with one hand. His left side of his body is partially paralyzed. For those who never caught Keith Jarrett live there is thankfully some very nice recordings to at least hear him live.

This show was originally downloaded from The Live Jazz Lounge. Every once in a while I post a show from his site because there is so much stuff there that Jazz fans really need to visit the site. I am sure there is stuff there I may not like but you will. So you may never know it was downloadable until you visit the place.

It's been a little while since we posted any Country Music and it just so happens I had a taste for some Outlaw Country last night. Around the time of this recording Hank Williams Jr.'s star was burning as bright as the end of a home grown roll in the country moonlight. Hank was crossing over into the mainstream quite a lot because Southern Rock was huge on Album Rock Radio stations. Before I retired I had this young redneck kid working for me that I really liked (and I say redneck having a family that came from Kentucky to Detroit for Auto assembly work so no hate). His parents named him Sawyer as in Tom Sawyer. He hated it. With no middle name to go by he started calling himself Bubba (truth!). He couldn't understand that Charlie Daniels, Marshall Tucker, Pure Prarie League, and Hank Williams Jr wasn't played on Country Radio. The same way others his age can't imagine why they would be played on Rock Radio. So anyway here is a great look at Bocephus when even my Grandmother knew who he was.

Another great sounding Marillion show. This time Marillion is playing a Music Festival with Queen. As a matter of fact Queen's set from the same festival is on the site here. This is also another installment of my Salute To Progressive Rock Bands. It wouldn't be a salute to Prog-Rock without them now would it?
