This next post in our Roots Of Heavy Metal Series comes from Dutch Hard Rockers Golden Earring. This power house band that's criminally under rated and under represented on American Radio. That being the case in the US Golden Earring is known more for "Radar Love" & "Twilight Zone" than there name. Now the song "Radar Love" in America is considered to be one of the Greatest Rock songs to drive to. It's also in the top 10 songs that make you get a speeding ticket. Now the other thing about "Radar Love", with that riff Golden Earring spawned thousands of Hard Rock/Hair Metal bands. Hair Metal band White Lion even hit the charts with their (rather lame) cover of "Radar Love". This posting is dedicated to George Kooymans. On February 5, 2021 Golden Earring announced they were putting the band to bed. The reason is that George Kooymans has been diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and can no longer tour.

Gary Wright was opening for Rick Wakeman on this tour. This is the only solo Gary Wright show that I have come across in my days of collecting. I usually don't post audience recordings but a Dan Lampinski recording is different. Dan Lampinski and Mike Millard both were audience taping superstars. Their recordings were clear and very listenable. Some even get mistaken for soundboard or FM recordings because of the quality. This recording is no exception to that rule, it Rocks. The music is clear, you can hear everything even the vocals. The bass is nice without being muddy as well. I recommend downloading this one, really it's a great listen & like I said Gary Wright shows are kinda rare.

The Flac is in 24bit so it makes for a large download. I separated the Flac into 2 parts both parts will open separately.

What can I say about The Legendary Herbie Hancock that I haven't said already. For that matter the same goes for Wayne Shorter and Dave Holland. There are 17 Herbie Hancock related shows on the site (here), 10 Wayne Shorter related shows (here), and a staggering 21 Dave Holland related shows (here). So I am going to concentrate my comments on the awe inspiring performance on the drums by Brian Blade. Brian Blade has recorded/performed with more Jazz artists than I want to name here but Chick Corea, Joshua Redman, Brad Mehldah & Daniel Lanois have all used Brian for drums. Brian is the perfect anchor for the wandering improvisation that Herbie, Wayne & Dave want to present here. The man can go from powerhouse to soft inflections on a dime. The intricacies are superbly accented & supported by Brian's playing. This is another show from the quartets Forensic Music Tour. If you want more the 1st one posted on the site can be found (here).

I love that Jean-Luc Ponty's music was deemed Rock & Roll enough to be on The King Biscuit Flower Hour. It's a short set, barely over 30 minutes, and Jean-Luc's performance makes it go by way too quick. In  other words he leaves you wanting so much more. Fans of Jean-Luc Ponty would be very wrong to let this one slip by without downloading it.

This is a Request from our friend Andy, so hear you are my friend! This great show from Whitesnake comes from when the band was still quite young. The set actually still has 2 MKIII Deep Purple tracks in it. "Might Just Take Your Life" wont last too many tours but "Mistreated" still pops up in Whitesnake setlists. Anyway after 2 solo albums David Coverdale
formed Whitesnake. At first the band was billed David Coverdale's Whitesnake but Dave stressed it was a band not a backing band. The band would release 5 Heavy Blues inflected Hard Rock albums. In 1984 there came a change in the music. The Blues inflected Hard Rock evolved into a Commercial Heavy Metal sound. This happened with the Slide It In album. Actually it came with the American version of the album. The album was not only remixed to have a heavier sound but parts were actually re-recorded. Guitar and bass parts were re-recorded by John Sykes and Neil Murray respectively. Both are great players and have recorded some awesome music but the change hurt a lot of original core fans. The bands transformation to a full on Los Angeles Hair Metal sound was completed by the 1987 self titled album. The fans Whitesnake lost were replaced by new ones, Coverdale's gamble paid off. The 25th Anniversary Version of Slide It In contains 8 of the original UK mixes (got it), the 35th Anniversary version includes them all (have to have it).

Tracks from the Greg Kihn Band's 1981 Country Club show were broadcast at least twice by Westwood One. Westwood One In Concert 81-10 with the Greg Kihn Band is sourced from the same concert at Wolf and Rissmiller's Country Club. Five songs are duplicated on both shows, but 81-10 has seven unique songs, and 82-12 has four unique songs.

The set list for 81-10 is:
Rendezvous (repeated on 82-12)
Womankind
Valerie
Trouble In Paradise (repeated on 82-12)
The Girl Most Likely
Sheila

Billboard Magazine of Sept. 19, 1981 mentions that the August 28, 1981 Kihn show at the Country Club was filmed for MTV. There is a YouTube video of When The Music Starts that matches this WW1 performance.

justdave's notes:
Just one of the many Pre-FM recordings encoded by Draftervoi
that Rosebud and I have in our archives. I decided that we have way too many of them just sitting there on hard drives doing nothing. So for the next month or so we will be including a Pre-FM show in every upload. These are all prime encodings of some great shows so that means you are in for a lot of good stuff starting here with The Greg Kihn Band and Southern Rockers Point Blank....Yeah That's Right A Point Blank Pre-FM ... Ever think you would see that ... Well we have Draftervoi to thank for it. He gets in bidding wars for Pre-FM vinyl and CD sets then carefully encodes them. The vinyl ones he meticulously de-clicks them in Audacity 1 click at a time. So download and sit back and listen to some great music

Today's post in our Salute To Progressive Rock Bands is by Focus. The Dutch Progressive Rockers are known by most New JDP readers, we have featured them before. Their Jazz/Hard Rock mostly instrumental brand of Progressive Rock is a favorite of mine. I love this show in particular because it consists of just one song, a almost 50 minute version of "Eruption" off of Focus II or Moving Waves as it was called in The U.S.A. It was my first Focus album purchase, of course bought for "Hocus Pocus" which was the only song I ever heard from Focus on American Radio. I soon however, began spinning side 2 of that album over and over again. The single track on side 2 was "Eruption" and I loved to get stoned and listen to it, like "Echoes" on Pink Floyd's Meddle.

The Legendary "Mister Soul" Donny Hathaway is another gone way too soon story. Donny got his start in music as a young songwriter, musician producer for Curtis Mayfields Curtom Records. He work sessions for The Staple Sisters, Jerry Butler, Aretha Franklin and Curtis Mayfield himself. It wasn't long before this bright young star in the making had his own singles out. In his short career Donny released 4 studio albums, one live album and a handful of singles. From those releases Donny received 4 Grammy Nominations winning one. Donny's energetic live shows and sweet voice made him a concert favorite where ever he played. Unfortunately Donny Hathaway started to experience the onset of mental illness during his career peak. Hathaway was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia in 1971. The following years were a roller coaster ride as Donny didn't take his medication regularly. In 1979 while working with Roberta Flack on  second album of duets, Donny broke down again. This time his mental state resulted in the sessions being shelved. Some hours after Donny Hathaway was found dead. He had jumped from his 15th floor apartment, he was just 33. Donny Hathaway's music will keep the memory alive of this talented young man. We all should work for a day when stories like Donny Hathaway's have better endings. Mental illness is no joke, nor is it a dirty secret to be swept under the proverbial family rug. If you know someone who needs a hand keep reaching out no matter how many times it takes. If you need help there are many outlets, please, please seek them out...
