Formed in 2000 after the 4 members met at a High on Fire show in Atlanta Georgia. Mastodon is a Progressive Metal band that combines many of the eclectic underground metal styles to come up with a style that is uniquely their own. Mastodon choose to not draw attention to themselves during their performances, much like Tool or Pink Floyd, wanting the audience to focus on the music instead. In keeping with that spirit, during their 2010 tour the band projected films on a big screen to further enhance the effect.

Mastodon have been nominated for 2 Grammy Awards, in 2007 for the song "Colony Of Birchmen" for best metal performance, and 2012 for the song "Curl Of The Burl" for Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance.

For the best representation of a Mastodon show I recommend the bands official live DVD Live At The Aragon.

Nice sounding broadcast from the Blood Mountain World Tour. Bassist Troy Sanders actually addresses the crowd at this show, something that he rarely does. But then again he says that he is quite stoned after smoking many joints before the gig. The performance does not suffer from Sanders' self confessed stoned state, Mastodon deliver the goods 100%.

Great recording from the Blood Mountain World Tour. Mastodon rip through this set without hardly a word to the audience, which is usual, preferring to let the music stand alone. This is a killer set and well worth the free download. If you have to choose one of the Mastodon shows I posted here.. I recommend more hard drive space because I couldn't choose. I have more to come as well!

Pinkpop Festival is held on the Pentecost Weekend which in Dutch is Pinksteren, hence the pink in the name. The annual festival was first held in 1970 and has hosted such diverse acts as Metallica, Kid Creole & The Coconuts, Lauryn Hill, KOrn, Argent, Jimmy Cliff, & Jewel to name a few.

This is a great set from Mastodon, and a nice recording too. Mastodon has gone from an indie label band to a major label success on it's own terms. Mastodon signed a recording/distribution contract with Warner/Reprise Worldwide in 2005. However in the US where the band is from they still record for independent label Relapse Records. The band has even been nominated for 2 Grammy Awards, yet the American Recording Industry is still built around the disposable sounds of the American Idol generation. Stale and processed sounds sold to the masses, pushed by the major radio networks that profit from being in bed with the fast-food type recording industry.
