ORIGINAL NOTES: Received these from a trader in the UK around 1992 that was affiliated with the BBC. He claims all were from his masters that he recorded himself, making them 1st gen. copies. Gklainer transferred these from the original cassettes to .wav files in 1998.  Note that the set list from 1/28/75 is from the day before he recorded the BBC 1 Radio Live In Concert CD.

This is what Miles wrote in his autobiography: “Airto Moreira quit early in 1971 and I got Jimmy Heath’s son, Mtume, to replace him on percussion. We didn’t record for a while because you have to let a band get used to playing together before you record anything. We went out on the road to try to get things together.
“Jack DeJohnette left the group late in 1971, around the same time Keith Jarrett left. I wanted the drummer to play certain funk rhythms, a role just like everybody else in the group had. I didn’t want the band playing totally free all the time, because I was moving closer to the funk groove in my head. Now, Jack could play drums like a motherf***er in a groove; he could really do that shit, but he also wanted to do other things, play a little freer, be a leader, do things his own way, so he left…
“I tried out Leon Ndugu Chancler… But after Gary Bartz, Keith, and Jack left my working band, I got my musicians from funk groups and not jazz bands because that’s the way I was going. Those guys were the last pure jazz players I’ve had in my bands up until today.”

The Jimi Hendrix Experience were booked to perform on April 26, 1969 with opening acts Chicago Transit Authority (soon-to-be renamed Chicago) and Cat Mother & The All Night Newsboys, the latter of whom shared management with the headliners. By the time The Jimi Hendrix Experience took the stage to blaze through a spirited set, live concert sound had drastically improved from the time of The Beatles baseball stadium tours, but crowd control was still a major concern. Between songs, Jimi pled with audience members to stop rushing the stage. A heavy police presence is felt; lyrics for their hit “Purple Haze” are altered (“’Scuse me while I kiss that policeman!”) and Jimi dedicates “Spanish Castle Magic” to “the plain clothes police out there and other goofballs.”

OK, here's an almost-upgrade for everyone. I grabbed a version of this FM broadcast off of Dime in December of 2009. It was decent except that it was missing the encore. What I offer here is a slightly better sound quality version, but not only includes the encore but also a cool, short interview with Robin right after he leaves the stage that was broadcast. Unfortunately, my version is missing Bridge of Sighs, whereas the first version had a complete(?) version of it. So, given all of that I wasn't sure how I was going to share this, so I decided to offer two slightly different versions:

96/24 version: My cassette version as-is with no edits (not included here)
44/16 version: My cassette version with Bridge of Sighs from the first source spliced in (didn't come out too bad, fairly seamless, but slightly off-key)

The date of this music is uncertain. The Davis Septet was booked for several nights at Paul's Mall in mid-October 1973. One set from October 17 has been issued on JMY ME-6403. My guess is that these sets took place before the October 17 date but after the recording sessions for Liebman's Lookout Farm, which took place at Generation Sound Studios in New York on October 10-11.

Although these shows have circulated for years with the venue as the Jazz Workshop, according to Jim Rose, a member of the Davis entourage from 1972 on, the venue was Paul's Mall.

Devotion is a hard driving, spaced-out, distorted hard-jazz-rock album featuring organist Larry Young, drummer Buddy Miles, and the little known bassist Billy Rich. This album was recorded close to the period when McLaughlin had been jamming with Jimi Hendrix, Young, Miles and Dave Holland. Terrible bootlegs exist of some of their jams, but bad sound quality and McLaughlin's guitar on the fritz make the bootlegs a ripoff.
Devotion was also sort of a ripoff. To this day, McLaughlin is angry about the way former Hendrix producer Alan Douglas mixed this record. Apparently, Douglas spliced bits of music together here and there that were not supposed to be connected. Despite this obvious problem, and the fact Douglas paid McLaughlin only $2,000 to record both Devotion and My Goal’s Beyond , this album is chock full of wonderfully ominous riffs and sounds. Devotion is an overlooked landmark album.
