King Biscuit Boy - King Biscuit Boy {1974}

King Biscuit Boy - King Biscuit Boy
Studio recordings @320
Out of Print

CD $40+ at the 'Zon

King Biscuit Boy aka Richard Alfred Newell, the Canadian blues musician noted for his harmonica playing. The name was taken from the 'King Biscuit Time' radio program, and was given to him by rock 'n' roll musician Ronald "Ronnie" Hawkins whilst he was playing as part of his backing band.

This recording has very little in common with the rest of Richard Newell's output, and for good reason. It was produced by Allen Toussaint at his creative apex, and is saturated with his New Orleans funk imprint. Blues traditionalists who enjoy the other Newell albums may not like this one as well, but to those who enjoy the Toussaint-style musical gumbo this offers a gem. It is excellent bluesy R&B. If it is your cup of tea you will want to investigate three other blue-eyed Toussaint productions from the same period: two albums whose titles are the names of the artists, "Browning Bryant" and "Jess Roden," and Frankie Miller's "High Life." Of course, Robert Palmer's first album, "Sneaking Sally Through the Alley," was recorded at Toussaint's studio with the Meters backing, and though not as fully Toussaintized, it is a fine album. ~N. The Helpful Soul - (1969) First Album (Out Of Print)

 *MY RIP

Hi folks. Been away for a while after a bout with Covid. I have been vaccinated so thank God for that. If you've had it you know what a motherfucker it is. Anyway I'm on the mend and ready to bring you my unique wit and wisdom and songs for your listening pleasure. Boy there sure has been some shit going down huh? Anyway about this post. Imagine The Standells, The Shadows Of Knight, The Seeds and you'll have a pretty good idea of what your getting here. Mostly cover songs trying to stay as true to the originals as possible. I think this band wanted to  be a mixture of The Jimi Hendrix Experience and Cream but came out as sounding like a garage band seeing themselves on the stage of the Fillmore. I wonder whose idea it was to try and copy Spoonful, Wheels Of Fire version. If your a fan of the above mentioned bands this is right up your alley. I love this stuff. See scan.

Songs

1.Blues For My Baby 8:06

2.Fire 2:42

3.Peace For Fools 10:33

4.You Got Me Floatin' 3:14

5.Spoonful 14:48

6.Kansas City 3:42

7.Crossroads 5:13

8.Little Wing 3:48

9.Aladin's Theme 2:34

Various venues-various dates @320

Recorded at various dates during the European leg for the Another Planet album, the set list is heavy on material from that and It, plus a number of singles cuts from around that time, demonstrating nicely that the group was far from a revival act even when most of its Batcave contemporaries had long since disappeared. ~AllMusic.com

Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit - Daytrotter Sessions

Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit
Daytrotter Sessions (2009-2013)

Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit is an American southern rock/ alt-country band based in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, and led by Jason Isbell, a former member of the Drive-By Truckers. The 400 Unit is Derry deBorja (keyboards), Jimbo Hart (bass) and Browan Lollar (guitar). Matt Pence (Centro-matic/South San Gabriel) lends his talents as co-producer, drummer and engineer.

The album, which was released in 2009, was co-produced by Isbell and The 400 Unit with Matt Pence. “I want it to be known that it’s a band record,” says Isbell. “I want it to be known that it’s something we all did together. Even though I wrote the songs, it was a very inclusive project.” Isbell has posted the new track, “Seven-Mile Island,” on the band’s MySpace site.

The album was recorded at the renowned FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, AL. Isbell, who Details Magazine calls “one of America’s best young songwriters,” is following in the tradition of American songwriters who have recorded in North Alabama. Much like Arthur Alexander, Eddie Hinton and Spooner Oldham, Isbell mixes a soulful vocal style with songs that are passionate and unrepentant in their sense of place and direct in their stubborn Southerness.

Isbell is known for his songwriting, in particular his storytelling about common folks from the South and their perspectives on life. Whether it's a song about a marriage on the rocks because of a soldier's PTSD in "Soldiers Get Strange" or a narrator relating his inner thoughts as a bar closes in "Streetlights," Isbell provides the inner lives of characters that connect to listeners because of his honest and sometimes darkly humorous lyrics.

Wayne Shorter Quartet - Live Marseille & Newport 2013

Excellent FM source @224

Saxophonist Wayne Shorter will be 80 on August 25 and this performance at the Festival des Cinq Continents in Marseille has been touted as an 80th birthday celebration. If only all of us could be so fortunate! And in February 2013, Shorter made his return to Blue Note Records after 43 years and released Without A Net, his new album with his long-running Quartet featuring pianist Danilo Perez, bassist John Patitucci, and drummer Brian Blade.

Reviewing Without A Net for the BBC, Marcus J. Moore wrote:
Jazz great Wayne Shorter recently spoke to the heart of his genre. “The six years I was with Miles (Davis), we never talked about music,” he told National Public Radio in the US. “We never had a rehearsal. How do you rehearse the unknown?”

He’s absolutely right. When done properly, jazz is a boundless medium through which improvisation is allowed to breathe. In fact, it’s encouraged…So in the truest essence of jazz, Without a Net is a sharp return to the music’s brighter days. Orbits is a repurposed version of the Miles Davis Quintet’s 1967 song of the same name. Shorter played on the original, a sprightly number of quick drum snares and lively piano chords. Shorter’s version is a bit darker and more methodical: above unsettled piano keys and cascading percussion, he infuses the melody with sporadic horn fills. It all makes for an exceptional recording, the saxophonist’s first since 2005’s Beyond the Sound Barrier. Here, Shorter is firmly at the helm, yet benevolent enough to play the background when needed. The rhythm has taken him far.

Lineup:
Wayne Shorter - saxophone
Danilo Perez - piano
John Patitucci - bass
Brian Blade - drums

*Original Notes*
The original line-up’s last UK tour was in support of the 10 album. I saw them several times on this stint and thought it was always an amazing gig! They were to lose Hugh Cornwell by August, but this is probably the ultimate document of this era.

A tight and energetic show they clearly are having fun and are at the top of their game. They were recording every show they did after being put in prison in 1980 in Nice, France, owing to comments allegedly made by bass player JJ Burnel.

Being free spirits who didn’t buy corporate bullshit they were always one comment away from controversy. This is why I love them. So luckily for us, a few of these tapes has found thee way into fans’ hands and this is one of the best.

This is a great recording. All the effects and left / right panning you’d hear at the gig are present. The band did release a lot of tracks from this tour as B-sides and extras and I suspect a professional got their hands on this before I did.

It’s a medium generation tape, ripped and mastered at 24bit/96k. Finalized as 16 bit/44k FLAC

As Always...Thanks To The Original Source!!!
