*Original Notes*
The original line-up’s last UK tour was in support of the 10 album. I saw them several times on this stint and thought it was always an amazing gig! They were to lose Hugh Cornwell by August, but this is probably the ultimate document of this era.

A tight and energetic show they clearly are having fun and are at the top of their game. They were recording every show they did after being put in prison in 1980 in Nice, France, owing to comments allegedly made by bass player JJ Burnel.

Being free spirits who didn’t buy corporate bullshit they were always one comment away from controversy. This is why I love them. So luckily for us, a few of these tapes has found thee way into fans’ hands and this is one of the best.

This is a great recording. All the effects and left / right panning you’d hear at the gig are present. The band did release a lot of tracks from this tour as B-sides and extras and I suspect a professional got their hands on this before I did.

It’s a medium generation tape, ripped and mastered at 24bit/96k. Finalized as 16 bit/44k FLAC

As Always...Thanks To The Original Source!!!

The Stranglers - Live Minneapolis, MN 1981

The Stranglers - Live Sam's
May 20, 1981
Minneapolis, MN
Soundboard Master @flac

*Original Notes*
This is a rare master recording unearthed a couple of years ago which has thus far only been circulated on a very limited level. To celebrate The Stranglers' 40 years in the biz (on tour now) I thought it was time it got a bit more exposure.
The person who kindly allowed me to rip this cannot remember who gave it to them...
This is The Stranglers at their peak. Playing material from The Raven, and The Gospel According To The Meninblack LP they were promoting, the music is interspersed with Hugh Cornwell’s acid wit. Hugh is on top form throughout, riffing after almost every song.
The cassette is a TDK AD90 and the inlay card has notes that read:
“Desk: PM1000 out of subs into active combining network mixed by Kevin Hortmann”

I have ripped this tape clean to digital with no processing at all.
It's a stunning document of a band several decades ahead of their time...
Enjoy!!!

The Purple Helmets - Rise Again - 1989 {Out of Print}

The Purple Helmets - Rise Again (1989)
Studio recordings @flac
{Out of Print}

Whether the result of, or the impetus for, the Stranglers' penchant for covering rock'n'roll standards (or just an indication of artistic burnout), J.J. Burnel and D. Greenfield launched a just-for-kicks sideband with Stranglers' saxman Alex Gifford (also piano with Van The Man & half of the Propellerheads), ex-Vibrators guitarist John Ellis (he had opened for the Stranglers in the 1970s as a member of The Vibrators, filled in for H. Cornwell during his time in prison in 1980 and became the future Stranglers' guitarist during near ten years) and Manny Elias ( drummer for : Interview , Tears for Fears , P. Gabriel, etc...). On two similarly titled but totally different albums, the Purple Helmets (nice name...) do nothing but relive the songs of their misspent youth. Whether they're playing "Woolly Bully," "I Can't Explain," "Over Under Sideways Down" and "Not Fade Away" on the live "Ride Again" or "She's Not There," "Money" and "First I Look at the Purse" on "Rise Again", a slightly more accomplished studio concoction. The Purple Helmets approach their chosen jukebox classics with the enthusiasm of teenagers and the skill of seasoned professionals.

"Old Codger"
What an old codger I am
What an old codger I am
What an old codger I am
What an old codger I am
What an old codger I am
What an old codger I am

Communion's got a lot of grace
It's got style and bread and wine
But they're not mine!
You know what I like!

What an old codger I am
What an old codger I am
What an old codger I am
What an old codger I am
What an old codger I am
What an old codger I am

I may be long in tooth and jaw
But I've got a lot of nerve
When it comes to an angel boy
Pray for me!

What an old codger I am
What an old codger I am
What an old codger I am
What an old codger I am
What an old codger I am
What an old codger I am

When the choir is singing in the aisles
And the moon tomes up over the steeple
I might just turn into a bol-weevil
And creep up on you with my beef-jerky!

Hey baby!
We're gonna shave 'em dry
You know what shave 'em dry is?
You'll learn!
Mmmm, that's good, that's good!
That's very good!
Just close your eyes baby and think of England!
Well why not?
I always keep my socks on!

I was rather interested to discover that vintage video footage of the Stranglers' infamous 1978 open-air gig in London's Battersea Park, complete with male and female strippers onstage during Nice 'n' Sleazy, has been posted on YouTube (in the restricted section which requires users to log in).  It's been there for almost nine months now, so evidently YouTube are perfectly cool with it, which is reassuringly non-uptight.

What strikes me most about the video is how preposterously tame it now looks  -  almost like a scene out of the once-outrageous but now rather embarrassing Hair.  In fact, it's not just tame, it's positively cheesy.  And yet there's a sort of innocent charm to it, almost of the girl next door variety, which on the one hand is faintly endearing but which on the other hand makes it even harder to get one's head around the fact that way back in '78 this was considered a "sexy" occurrence.

Personally I've never quite understood how anyone except a twelve-year-old boy could possibly get turned on by anything as naff and laboured as striptease.  But this particular bit of videotape certainly stands up as a quaint social document of what used to be considered outrageous  -  and as one of the (female) viewers has commented underneath the video, it's also good to see a bunch of young ladies whose wazongas haven't been 'enhanced' to bursting point by having unnatural substances shoehorned into them.
