Larry Coryell & the 11th House - Boston, MA. 1973

Larry Coryell & the 11th House
Jazz Workshop
Boston, Mass.
December 4, 1973

FM Source @flac
1st set

performance quality: A good stuff
recording quality: B to B+ (good
fidelity, but some static in parts)
source: FM broadcast (2nd gen.?)
runtime: 55:30 (minutes/seconds)

lineage: Maxell XLII 90 min. trade cassette (2nd gen.?) >
played on nak. bx-300 into soundforge (wav) >
flac (sb's aligned) > torrentially yours.

Setlist:
1. radio announcer introduction 0:25
2. yin 7:47
3. Low-Lee-Tah 6:39
4. the funky waltz 6:20
5. ism 4:40
6. gratitude 6:05
7. band introductions 2:13
8. joyride (end applause spliced, tape flip) 12:04
9. drum solo > birdfinger and radio announcer outro 9:15

Line-up:
Larry Coryell: guitar
Randy Brecker: trumpet
Mike Mandel: keyboards
Danny Trifan: bass
Alphonse Mouzon: drums

notes:
Although Larry had been broadcasted with his "foreplay" band the year before
in Boston, this was the 1st time the 11th house was broadcasted live in Boston
(and not the last) probably during a three night run which was the usual
scheduling policy for shows at the Jazz Workshop and next-door Paul's Mall.
this set is featuring music from the band's great self titled debut album.
although this would probably be Larry's most familiar band to most folks,
he had already shared some wonderful music before forming the 11th house,
which would become one of the premiere of all fusion bands of the 1970's,
along with such company as the Mahavishnu Orchestra, and Return to Forever.
although the performance is clearly not of a band that's been playing together
for a long time, raw and fresh and a little rough around a few edges, it was
still a very nice performance in a small club gig. many of the artists who
have played there would move into much larger venues later, including Miles Davis
(who was there in 1972 and 73), Herbie Hancock (twice in 1973), Return to Forever
(at least twice, in 1973), the McCoy Tyner group, and Jack DeJohnette's Directions.
it's a really awful sounding dive pit of a club with a legendary history of
shows from the 70's, rivaled in Boston only by the rock oriented Boston Tea Party
a few years earlier, another awful sounding dive pit of a room.
thanks to the unknown soul who was resourceful and bright enough to record this
classic show, and without any of the music or stage talk getting cut.
I really appreciate that, even more so with early 70's era shows.
some work was done to remove the worst of the static (as much as possible without
ruining the recording) especially during "gratitude" and the drum solo.
it was pretty hard to listen to before, but the finished result in here
came out rather enjoyably. it took some doing and patience but was worth it,
since it's Larry from the early 70's, and he even clarifies the correct spelling
for track 3's title. this set is seamless (no gaps or interruptions.)

Thanks to the taper and sharers!

Pink Floyd - Paris 1977

By now, every fart, burp, wrong note, wrong key that Pink Floyd has ever brought to the stage has been bootlegged. For whatever reason, that I don't understand fans have gotta have it. While I'm at it, don't you think that it would be nice if every once and a while a band would deviate from their same old tired, played out set? Hell I'm pretty sure Nick Mason has asked himself, once or twice "Oh great, it's Roger's time to sing Money"  "I hope he doesn't go off on a tanget and complain about the shitty room service last night, before I count it down"  Imagne if you will..Pink Floyd getting up on stage and playing a set of Mott The Hoople covers. Or David Bowie and band breaking into a version of "Flirting With Disaster" Think about the chaos it would cause if the Sex Pistols started doing "Ruby,Don't Take Your Love To Town" And with that I give you this.See scans

Gil Scott-Heron - Baden-Baden, Germany 1984

Gil Scott-Heron - Ohne Filter
Baden-Baden, Germany

March 1984
Broadcast source @320

2 Un-chaptered files @ 58:18

This set includes songs from his most recent album at that time, "Moving Target" (1982), as well as from his earlier albums.

No set list was available for this recording.

Musicians:
Gil Scott-Heron - Piano & Vocals
Kim Jordan - Keyboards & Backup Vocals
Ron Holloway - Saxophone
Robert Gordon - Bass
Larry McDonald - Percussion
Rodney Young - Drums

Gil Scott-Heron  was an American jazz poet, singer, musician, and author known for his work as a spoken-word performer in the 1970s and 1980s. His collaborative efforts with musician Brian Jackson fused jazz, blues, and soul with lyrics relative to social and political issues of the time, delivered in both rapping and melismatic vocal styles. He referred to himself as a "bluesologist", his own term for "a scientist who is concerned with the origin of the blues". His poem "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised", delivered over a jazz-soul beat, is considered a major influence on hip hop music.

Scott-Heron's music, particularly on the albums Pieces of a Man and Winter in America during the early 1970s, influenced and foreshadowed later African-American music genres, including hip hop and neo soul. His recording work received much critical acclaim, especially for "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised". AllMusic's John Bush called him "one of the most important progenitors of rap music", stating that "his aggressive, no-nonsense street poetry inspired a legion of intelligent rappers while his engaging songwriting skills placed him square in the R&B charts later in his career."

Scott-Heron remained active until his death, and in 2010 released his first new album in 16 years, titled I'm New Here. A memoir he had been working on for years up to the time of his death, The Last Holiday, was published posthumously in January 2012. Scott-Heron received a posthumous Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012. He also is included in the exhibits at the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) that officially opened on September 24, 2016, on the National Mall, and in an NMAAHC publication, Dream a World Anew. In 2021, Scott-Heron was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, as a recipient of the Early Influence Award. (Wikipedia)

Ohne Filter was a live television program featuring international pop and rock groups from 1983 to 2001, broadcast by German public TV station SWF (Südwestrundfunk). In contrast to Rockpalast (WDR), which was broadcast from larger venues such as the Grugahalle, Ohne Filter was produced at the more intimate setting of a regular TV studio. By the end of 1983, it had become one of the most popular German television music programs. Around 300 episodes were produced, including performances by Chaka Khan, Joe Cocker, and Deep Purple, to name but a few. (Wikipedia)

Sonny Landreth – Louisiana Code - Live Grant Park Blues Festival Chicago 1993

Sonny Landreth – Louisiana Code - Live Grant Park Blues Festival Chicago 1993

WXRT FM Broadcast

01 – Common Law Love    02 – Meet Your New Landlord    03 – Tuning    04 – Speak Of The Devil    05 – Talking, Pt.1    06 – Instrumental No.1    07 – Talking, Pt.2    08 – Blues Attack    09 – Band Intros   10 – Sacred Ground    11 – Talking, Pt.3    12 – Bad Weather    13 – Congo Square

Slide guitarist Sonny Landreth is known in guitar circles as The King of Slydeco. Landreth comes from the deep south of the United States, from Louisiana where the local music style is zydeco. Landreth began his career in 1979 as a member of Clifton Chenier's Red Hot Louisiana Band. Chenier was then the zydeco artist in the New Orleans music scene.
Landreth plays with The Goners (Kenneth Blevins on drums, Dave Ransom on bass and Steven Cohn on organ, accordion and vocals) a number of songs from the early 90's albums (Blues Attack from 1981, Down In Louisiana from 1986 and Outward Bound from 1992).

And from the first song, Common Law Love, the zydeco blues blasts out of the speakers with beautiful interaction between Landreth's slide guitar and Cohn's accordion. In the second song, Webb Wilder's Meet Your New Landlord, Landreth lets his slide guitar whine, screech and scream in the intro before the cheerful and very danceable music breaks loose.

It goes on like this throughout the album with Speak Of The Devil (by the Pirates Of Mississippi) with beautiful organ playing by Cohn and with the banging Blues Attack that fully deserves that title. In all those songs, Landreth shows that it is not for nothing that he is counted among the greatest slide guitarists in the music scene by colleagues/fans such as Eric Clapton, Robben Ford and Mark Knopfler.

The live concert closes with two of his most famous songs, the exciting Bad Weather and Congo Square (the square in New Orleans where the slaves who worked on the cotton fields used to gather on Sundays to dance to the zydeco music).
