Halloween Double "The Limiñanas" Feature

Ah, the French.

They have so much great bands like Magma, Heldon, Les Rita Mitsouko, Stereolab, Air (to name a few of the many). In the great krautrock band Faust there's also kind of a protoptype of a French/German collaboration. The French love Krautrock and bands like Stereolab or the here presented Limiñanas show openly their admiration and that they're heavily influenced by the Can. So they play a fine cover version of their "Mother Sky"

As last night a German Radiostation aired one of their shows at Paris I grab the opportunity to give a double feature of them, one show, 2018-01-18 Paris FM isn't my own record but found at the net. The second I recorded myself (in fact it was my computer ...) so I can share it as a FLAC record
Until recently, The Limiñanas were more famous abroad than in their own country, France. Their fanbase is made of prestigious celebrities (Franz Ferdinand, Jack White, Bobby Gillespie, Andrew Weatherall…) and the guest list on their new album is just as impressive. Released last January, Shadow People brings together French actress Emmanuelle Seigner and her sexy voice, legendary bass player Peter Hook (from Joy Division and New Order), French singer-songwriter Bertrand Belin and, last but not least, Anton Newcombe (from The Brian Jonestown Massacre), who recorded this album at his home-studio in Berlin, sang on the amazing song “Istanbul Is Sleepy” and played many different instruments throughout the record.

Happily married and based in Cabestany, a small town near Perpignan, Lionel (guitarist) and Marie (drummer) Limiñana are finally getting the recognition they long deserved. On stage, The Limiñanas become an extended family of musicians and singers, but the core of the band is this perfectly matched couple who share a passion for garage rock, French yé-yé songs, psychedelia, new wave and soundtracks by Ennio Morricone or John Barry – they both possess an encyclopedic culture. They started making music as The Limiñanas at home, in 2009. Alternating between French and English, their albums obviously reflect what they listen to, in a paradoxical but wonderful mixture of raw, primitive sounds and a sophisticated, nonchalant delivery. The history of rock has already shown other couples with the same sense of unity, from The Cramps to The White Stripes or The Kills. The Limiñanas belong to this explosive lineage.

Ah, btw. Perpignan ... They have an Airport there and one of the most beautiful sites I ever had the luck to enjoy are the so called "Gorges de Galamus", a canyon where the Romans once walked by. One has to climb a bit to find a private place to take a bath ;)

Perpignan is "in the south of France where the ladies love to dance", to quote on of my fav bands. Near the Spanish border - one short jump away from the famous Dali-Museum. The region itself, the "Pays Cathare" is a wonderful place (where I spent 22 years on holiday). You may be aware of its secrets when you enjoyed Dan Browns (or better Michael Beigents) books on the Holy Grail ;)

So for now: Enjoy the French.

St. Louis, MO.

February 15, 1990
Soundboard @flac
Liberated Bootleg

*Incomplete concert recorded live at the Mississippi Nights, St. Louis, February 15, 1990.
This recording seemed to be mis-labeled as the Royal Grove Ballroom, Omaha, February 13, 1990 show due to an error of Al, who misidentified the city during the concert.

Recorded from the soundboard, "Breathe" fades in, "Burning Inside" fades out (due to the 45-minute tape flip on the original master tape, missing the last 2 minutes of the song), and "The Land Of Rape And Honey" fades out (due to the time limit of the CD).

"Thieves" contains an impromptu intro rendition of the Z.Z. Top track "La Grange".
"Stainless Steel Providers" is incorrectly listed as "Stainless Steel Pounders" on the back insert.

This unofficial CD is the longest and best source for this concert, but "The Land Of Rape And Honey" is only available in full on the Warzone unofficial LP.

My first encounter with Kevin Coyne (being a fan of this beautiful loser for years) took place at this festival across the (hard then) french border: Rettel 1980

On stage with him that day The Clash, "London Calling" was just released, UFO (i would like to have seen them 10 years earlier) and The Cure (presenting "17 Seconds") ... sounds like one has to be overwelmed by the big C's. But, this fat social worker in pink dungarees blew them straight away.

I don't know the members of his band, sometimes i argue it could've been The Ruts (he had just made a 2LP "Sanity Stomp", one record with Brian Godding and Robert Wyatt and one with The Ruts as band). I dunno, but what I remember was the pure energy just blowing me away (maybe a bit of Mescal was also involved in the experience, too).

What a beautiful loser! There's a story out there on the Doors asking him to be their singer after jims dead and him just answering "no" to that offer - great work over 3 decades and always heart-touching. When later stranded lost in germany he found his second wife and stayed at nurenberg to his death some decade later.

[fun fact: also the great moondog found a home in germany, where he stayed living with a family who picked him up for some christmas meal, on an invitation proposed by the daughter as xMas wish ...]

This Rockpalast-Record also shows the legendary Zoot Money playing keybords for kevin. Enjoy!

PS: There's a Youtube Audio out there of the Clash set.

Don't ask about Roxy Music. The didn't showed up.

This is an audience recording that was apparently broadcast by WFMU-FM at some point.  The sound quality is reasonably good, perhaps a little boomy at times, but otherwise quite listenable.  This show is from near the end of the original lineup.  Cale would be ousted from the group a few months later by Reed.

As we say around here:  Enjoy or Not.

Here is the other. This one features songs from the critically underrated "Dry Dreams" album (never on CD) If you can hook a brother up with other JC shows that feature songs from "Dry Dreams" it would be greatly appreciated. Also the only flaw I hear is some static interference during "Barricades" but it's real short and doesn't deter you from hearing this great sounding show. See (homemade) scans

The Dread At The Controls

the story of these two tapes, as far as i remember it, goes like this: a german student exploring the rasta-culture to get his degree or being payed by his university to do so, visits mikey dread at the radio JBC studios in kingston, jamaica, where mikey dread had a weekly show "saturday night at radio JBC". having his mono-tape-recorder with him for an interview, he plugged in and recorded the next three hours.

befriended with our beloved artist "snoid studios" he sent him a copy of the tapes ... the rest is (to us at the so called "hinterwald") history.

i remember 1980 everyone of us had a copy. when a car of a friend drove by that summer with windows open you could be sure hearing these tapes played loud. our "summer of 1980" tape, favourite in the  "hinterwald" scene, where those days a punk-reggae-party took place: deadheads, punks & reggaefans created in 1981 the "hinterwald free & outside" festival which will have its 40th anniversary in the next summer.

following the link above you can get a slight impression of the historic events, the bands from that time, photos, the festival-posters and other artwork by "snoid studios". musically i suggest "Anssets Choice", that's my personal compilation of almost live stuff i recorded those days. yup, that's some weird german laguage, even for germans, some sung in our local dialect.

so i may call these tapes the "basic constitution", the musical place where we all met, opening the ears of even die hard deadheads (you know that: you enter a room and there are tapes with no names on it but only a date and a location ...) for some clash-stuff (mikey helped them making "sandinista") and we - the more punk or new wave freaks - learned about the secrets of listening to a week of deadshows ;)

the show itself is just wonderful. mikey extends some songs in various versions, original, dub, toasted ... spices them up with some animal sounds, noises, cries and creates this unique experience he never released as record. so you can't purchase it or anything else like this.

the opener takes a bit time, but then he's in a flow you'll hopefully enjoy as we did in the summer of 1980, a good year for roots rock reggae.

fun fact: my friendship to "snoid studios" is based on our common love to max romeo's "war in a babylon" and it lasts at this point in time & space more than 40 years, so the upsetter seems a solid foundation for friendship ;)

04 Nayaghab Keith
05 Foggy Road

This is recorded with sennheiser binaural mikes plugged in my ears and with this fine sony recorder

in my jacket. so put your headphones on and stand with me that day in front of the stage (trying to keep my head straight and not too much being stressed by the folks 'round me talking or singing along with burning spear). the mikes give you a perfect impression of the room, front is in front, back is in the back - and if there's a voice coming "out of you" that's mine ;)

i know, not  the best of bitrate, but that show along with one of alexis korner (feat. alan hodgkinson on bass, i'll post that in the near future) is one of the first i scratched from tape, when mp3 was invented and one could burn CDs. comes a time i'll re-rip both.

2nd show of burning spear i had the luck to see, sorry no record made, took place at the same place, where gravenites & cippolina played in 1980

greetings from the hinterwald. wadawasaw means love, man!

"This show in Detroit has turned up on a number of titles including the dodgy Creamset on Gold Standard. It's a very good show rightly regarded by Cream fans as one of the best of the late '67 tour of the US. For its vintage, the recording is very good and you can really hear why Cream had such an impact as a live act. On Sweet Wine and Rollin' and Tumbin' Ginger and Jack really lock together allowing Eric free rein to shine: and shine he does. Highly recommended. - DR"
