The Clash - Live De Brakke Grond, Amsterdam 1977

A special Dave Sez contribution!!!

The Clash - Live De Brakke Grond,
Amsterdam, Netherlands
May 14, 1977
A+ Audience Recording @Flac

From the Dave Sez archive: an excellent and extremely rare FLAC audience recording by Hans Devente of the Clash at a private gig in 1977. Hans released this recording (and other Dutch recordings by him of Television, XTC and Talking Heads) on very shortlived posts at guitars101; their quality, rarity and historical significance merit a more permanent presence on the Web. Despite its size (1.1 GB), reposted in FLAC as requested by Hans. Please do not circulate in mp3. Full artwork by Trystereo included.

Chrome Cranks - self titled - 1994 {Out of Print}

Chrome Cranks - self titled
Studio Recordings @ 160
Out of Print

Formed in Ohio by Peter Aaron (vocals, guitar) and William Weber in 1988, the band more or less plodded indistinguishably until relocating to New York City in the early '90s. In 1992, the Cranks were joined by former Honeymoon Killers' bassist Jerry Teel. Drummer Dan Willis signed on at the same time. At that juncture, the band was given a sense of purpose and a definite aesthetic. Where early recordings certainly reflect an interest in garage rock and noisy indie bands like the Jesus and Mary Chain, it wasn't until Teel joined that the Chrome Cranks' sound solidified itself. From that point, the band picked up where the Honeymoon Killers left off, churning out a stripped down, deconstructive bastardization of garage rock tradition, retooling everything from the Stooges to Kim Salmon. The new lineup inaugurated their recording career with the debut EP Eight-Track Mind on PCP in 1992, thus establishing their Cramps meets Pussy Galore aesthetic -- sleaze-rock, essentially. A heap of other singles followed in the successive years.

In 1994, PCP released the quartet's self-titled debut album, quite possibly their best. Dead Cool followed in 1995, with Bob Bert, previously of Sonic Youth, Pussy Galore, and many other bands of note, on drums. The album lacked the visceral rawness of its predecessor. The Chrome Cranks' final studio album, Love in Exile, appeared in 1996. Although the band folded that year, sporadic singles followed, as well as the album of outtakes and demos, Oily Cranks, and the potent live document, Live in Exile, both in 1997.

Oddly enough, it's the debut, the first Chrome Cranks album, that rocks the hardest. Where it takes most bands a few discs to fully develop their style, their chops, their sure-footedness -- if they are to develop it at all -- the Chrome Cranks, with this self-titled debut, show themselves as a band in absolute command of its trade. This is possibly the strongest album in the Chrome Cranks' oeuvre, and likely the bluesiest, noisiest, and grittiest.

Fleet Foxes - Live Primavera Sound 2011

Fleet Foxes - Live Primavera Sound Festival
Barcelona, Spain,
May 28, 2011
Soundboard or FM Source @256

Since releasing their 2008 debut album, Fleet Foxes have represented a high point in the scramble to reinvigorate rural music: anchored by frontman Robin Pecknold's ghostly tenor, the band's beguiling pop songs borrow from a century and a half of folk tradition, nodding to everyone from Harry Smith to Vashti Bunyan to Brian Wilson. Helplessness Blues, the band's second record, is an ambitious leap forward, crammed with confessions and sweet-and-lonesome melodies-- all too good to forget.

Pecknold is typically described as a shy, somewhat reluctant emissary-- he's soft-spoken and endearingly humble-- but he's also a whip-smart and critical consumer of culture. The night before Fleet Foxes kicked off a mostly sold-out North American tour, we spoke about the Pacific Northwest, the selfishness of art, and why authenticity still matters to music fans.
