Sing The Truth

Three women with superhuman voices — Angelique Kidjo, Cecile McLorin Salvant, Lizz Wright— will be touring together again under the banner of Sing The Truth. The program weaves together songs of empowerment and love into an evening that will leave no heart untouched, no soul unloved, and no one leaving without a bountiful of joy. When these three sing the truth they are keeping it real. In these times, it is imperative to place great women artists and their music and their songs front and center.

Gilbert "Gil" Scott-Heron (April 1, 1949 – May 27, 2011)was an American soul and jazz poet, musician, and author, known primarily for his work as a spoken word performer in the 1970s and '80s. His collaborative efforts with musician Brian Jackson featured a musical fusion of jazz, blues, and soul, as well as lyrical content concerning social and political issues of the time, delivered in both rapping and melismatic vocal styles by Scott-Heron. His own term for himself was "bluesologist", which he defined as "a scientist who is concerned with the origin of the blues." His music, most notably on Pieces of a Man and Winter in America in the early 1970s, influenced and helped engender later African-American music genres such as hip hop and neo soul.

3 Mustapha 3 @ Peel

3 Mustaphas 3 is a British World music band formed in 1982. Core members are Ben Mandelson (under the name Hijaz Mustapha), Tim Fienburgh (1954–2008) (under the name Niaveti III) Colin Bass (under the name Sabah Habas Mustapha), and Nigel Watson (under the name Houzam Mustapha), around which orbit many other Mustaphas – all supposed to be the nephews of Uncle Patrel Mustapha. They claim to originate from the Balkans, but play music from various parts of the world.

Their slogan, "Forward in all directions!", is an expression of this musical diversity. Active at the end of the 1980s and the beginning of the 1990s, they have now stopped producing and performing together, but haven't officially disbanded.

This was my chance in 1979 to see the band live and this show impressed me in two aspects: it was a hell of a, no second wasted, pure energy. I was in heaven then. I remember Snowy White on stage but i'm not sure, if there also was Gary Moore too aside of Phil Lynott.

2nd aspect: we left the venue (as far as i remember, it was werner goldi balzert who took me with him that day) quietly, no words to express what we just saw - and went to a pizzeria.

Goldi was the guy who organized for Unikult Saarbrücken very great shows those days and often engaged me to work there as a roadie for ie. Ultravox!, Eddie & The Hot Rods, Dr. Feelgood, Steve Hillage, Steel Pulse to name a few, when they were young & hot. Some "archivalia" on him and Unikult to be found here

There at the pizzeria the guy who came to our table with the menu card opened his mouth and made some funny movements but stayed silent - i thought "Is he joking me??". But than i realized, i was completely deaf (don't panic, just for some times). Never made that experience before or after. Seems they were the loudest band i ever heard (well, i missed Grand Funk Railroad ... in their better days when one of their shows was noted as "earthquake")

Eric Carmen - Live Hollwood, CA. 1975

Eric Carmen Band
West Hollywood 1975
Live at The Roxy, Sunset Boulevard, West Hollywood, CA.
December 19, 1975.
FM Source @320
KMET-FM 94.7 (Los Angeles)

Thanks to elegymart for sharing the show at Dime.

elegymart noted:

This show took place on the eve before “All by Myself,” hand-picked by Clive Davis as the first single off Eric Carmen’s debut album, entered the Billboard Hot 100 Chart. At this point Carmen was two decades away from Celine Dion’s mega-popular remake, and it was long before “American Idol” contestants would be judged for their covers of the song in front of Simon Cowell and company.

Although Eric Carmen didn’t sell out and become the king of schmaltz, he was certainly being nudged along in that direction and further away from the power pop of of his former band, The Raspberries. Having Shaun Cassidy cover “That’s Rock and Roll” probably didn’t do much to bolster his rock credibility. If soft rock is your thing, there’s enough of that here to keep you satiated. Otherwise, ending with “Go All the Way” is really what redeems this set.

The sound quality here is decent, but seems to be lacking in the higher frequencies, and some tape flutter can be found in “On Broadway.” The KMET DJ seems compelled to give on-air IDs after every song.

Grand Duchy: Rare & Popular

Bands from the "Grand Duchy of Luxembourg" aren't very well known outside the small country, even Luke Haas, musician, comic-author, did his best to write the history of Luxembourg's Rock & Roll in (afaik) two books. I purchased the first one at the end of the 80ies in a local german grocery, but, you know: books. Someone's says "Oh, beautiful book, can i take it with me to read it at home?", and then they disappear ...

I had the chance to meet Luke Haas at the yearly comic-festival at Contern, where he sold me a copy of the "Lëtzebuerger Rocklexikon II".

Rock is always kind of histories to tell and Luke did a great job in collecting an archive for these bands. He died some years ago but his work has survived him.

 Thierry Van Werveke

First I saw Thierry in "Troublemaker", a small independent movie from Luxembourg about two guys, leaving prison, starting instantly new robberies, getting catched by the police, going to jail, leavin' it, starting a bank robbery and so on ... a wild and really funny circle of jail & robbery, troubles & shootings through that small & beautiful country. I instantly became a fan of the actor and the musician.

He then became famous in germany as an actor in some popular movies like "Knocking On Heaven's Door" (he's the perfect actor for troublemaking punks ...). But then, at the age of 50, he suddenly died in 2009. He didn't need a doctor - he knew, what was wrong with him.

Thierry was at his best singing in his Lëtzebuerg dialect, somewhere between Jacques Brel, Serge Gainsbourg & Tom Waits. A great and unforgotten artist.

On the rare and never that popular side of the country, there are two rare CD's in the archives. The first is a copy from a friend (burning CDs for friends became popular those days) of the band "Galileo"

Galileo (LUX) - V

There's no further information on this record, Google isn't really my friend and given that there's a european satellite project sitting in Luxembourg called "Galileo"... yep, no further information on that. "V" may be a hint, that there are maybe records from "I-IV" ...

Sleepwalk - Fir Wat?

"Fir Wat?" is luxembourgish dialect for "Why". This EP reached a certain popularity (in Luxembourg ... and, surprise, in my wife's record collection)

If visiting Luxembourg, don't miss "The Family Of Man" ...

24 Sour Milk Sea(3:50)

Thanks to itsjustme 2.0

Booklet Notes:
As the title suggests, there is some digital sleight of hand at work here.
"Men and Horses, Hoops and Garters" a collection of Beatles tracks that were
created by combining various versions or elements of certain performances into
new and unique interpretations of the songs. Many times this resulted in a
"before and after" image, much like what was done with "Yes It Is" on "Anthology 2"
(which was the inspiration for this effort), in other cases completely new mixes
have been created. All of these tracks are fully composed of Beatles performances.
Other than some slight tempo adjustment, nothing has been added to any of these
performances.

Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
is a remix of the isolated 5.1 tracks. This version emphasizes the churning
rhythm groove.

With A Little Help From My Friends
OOPSed version of the remix from the "Yellow Submarine Songtrack". This particular
track draws your attention to Lennon's vocals, as well as the inverted chord
structure of the Beatles' background harmonies.

Glass Onion
consists of a remix of Lennon's demo version followed by the second half of the
commercial version.

And I Love Her
is the Anthology rehearsal take cross-faded into the CV during the guitar break.

She Loves You
"She Loves You" (stereo) is especially stunning when heard on headphones; the
doubling of the guitars and vocals on the chorus makes this a true power pop
performance.

Eight Days A Week
is the CV book-ended with studio banter and vocal rehearsal.

She's A Woman
is take 1 cross-faded with the CV.

Good Morning, Good Morning
"Good Morning, Good Morning" combines five different sources into an aural
documentary of this classic song.

I Me Mine
is a rehearsal take cross-faded into the CV.

Honey Pie
"Honey Pie" emphasizes how much more fun the demo is to listen to than the
commercial version.

It's Only Love
is the Anthology rehearsal take cross-faded in to the CV.

Get Back
The extended ending version, fading out and in (much like "Strawberry Fields
Forever").

Sour Milk Sea
"Sour Milk Sea" combines the Kinfauns demo with the Jackie Lomax recording.
When it works, the effect is very intriguing.

I Am The Walrus
"I Am The Walrus" combines the commercial version, the Anthology track, the
extended ending from "Acetates", and the isolated "King Lear" speech and a
small bit from the Lost Lennon Tapes into a new stereo version.

Old Brown Shoe
cross-fades the Anthology demo with the CV at the middle eight. The dual
lead guitars work together pretty well here.

Why Don't We Do It In The Road
"Why Don't We Do It In The Road" highlights the extreme differences between
the acoustic demo and the finished version.

What You're Doing
combines the rehearsal version with the CV. A bit of digital cut-and-paste
added some dramatic effect to the seque.

Everybody's Got Something To Hide Except For Me And My Monkey
features an extended crossfade from the Kinfauns demo into the CV. Some
slight tempo adjustment was necessary to make it work.

Across The Universe
"Across The Universe" combines unique elements from both the Phil Spector
mix and the George Martin mix.

Let It Be
The double length lead guitar version (George's leads presented consecutively,
not simultaneously).

Isn't It A Pity/Hey Jude
emphasizes the similarities in the choruses of both songs.

"Tracks 1, 3, 5, 12 and 19 are contributions from other sources, and I must say
"thank you" to those people who very generously offered to share their hard work
to help complete this collection. My gratitude also goes to those who have offered
suggestions, inspiration and encouragement. A big thanks also to xx for his hard
work in designing the artwork for this set. See you next time..

Magma - 1974-02-06 Radio Bremen Studio F

from tumblr

Magma is one of my favourite french bands of all time. They created their own world and language (sounds sometimes a bit like a mix of German and Klingonian) and I remember being compeletly overwhelmed by their music when i first heard their records played by a french friend in the 70ies where we went to our first holiday without family.

Means: We went to an old hippie cooking perfect "crêpes" and offered the finest of his weed - Thanks a lot, Francois, the episode combining weed, crêpes & Max Romeos "War Ina Babylon", your perfect pantomime then is one of the most recalled family tales over here ;)

We came back from Provence with Max Romeo, Dr Feelgood, The Clash and ... Magma newly added to our musical universe. Going along with that band along its path for now 40 years never was dissapointing to me.

I found this show, played at one of my fav german radio stations, in the net and as it's a german show ... Thanks to the unknown original uploader

The second part follows "toute suite" and brings you (hopefully) back to that better planet ;)

*Original Notes*
This was originally seeded on Dime, I believe, in 2014. The original master was quite quiet, althought the instruments were actually fairly well defined despite having a bit too much presence on the treble. I've widened the sound a little bit, so it feels more epic, more live. Although, again, the upper range is slightly narrower than the original master, because I felt it was too overbearing. Now, I know what you're thinking - 'how can you have overbearing and Ghost in the same sentence?' They are, after all, a wonderful exercise in excess. Silly excess, but excess nonetheless. In salute of this, there's a much stronger guitar presence on this version and more attack on the bass generally. It's been a while since I saw the band live myself, but I've tried to bring this master as close as I could to capturing their live sound. Ghost are a fun band, but they are, when all is said and done, a metal band. And one needs to be able to headbang to metal, which one cannot do if the guitars are as buried as they were on the original master. I have edited out DJ chatter. In some places I've had to move crowd noise around in order to compensate. I've made no other 'executive creative decisions' other than this. I hope it isn't too dissapointing.

Aswad - 1980-07-03 WDR Studio-B Cologne

When Aswad played the Rockpalast recording at the Studio-B of the Westdeutscher Rundfunk nowbody expected them to become pop stars in the future, yet. At this time they still were part of the London punky reggae party, which Lee Perry initialized with a Bob Marley song, on which the 18 year old Drummie Zeb did the drumming. Aswad, as well as Steel Pulse and Matumbi, joined the coalition of British underdogs against the upcoming Thatcherism and played together with punk bands in the line-up of the Rock Against Racism campaign in universities, youth centers and clubs throughout the island. The Rockpalast concert shows the Band in an early stage, as they only already released two of their about 30 albums: influenced by punk, raw and untamed, years before they rose to be one of the most important reggae bands from Great Britain next to Steel Pulse (source)
