Another from the Sam Eliot's Mustache Collection.

This is a companion piece to the recent digitizations done by JustDave from over at The New JDP.  A few weeks back, JustDave digitized Westwood One Superstar Concert 90-02 (syndicated broadcast date of Feb. 16-18, 1990).  Sam Eliot's Mustache had a copy of the In Concert 90-34 version. It's the same set of songs in the same order as the Superstars version... but Blood On Blood is a longer version than on the Superstars Concert.

You can visit the most excellent The New JDP herehttps://thenewjdp.blogspot.com/

JustDave also tells me that there are differences "Westwood One #90-34 actually edits around Ozzy's swearing differently than on my #90-02. On #90-34 they edit around the cuss words and use parts of the sentence."

You'd think that Westwood One would master and edit the shows just once, and swap in different announcers and commercials, but we keep finding examples where the source material is edited differently but with the same set list.

JustDave and Sam Eliot's Mustache both had copies of the original satellite broadcast, so JustDave tackled converting both copies.

The In Concert version has the Miller Genuine Draft commercials that featured bands doing their jingle.  Unlike the Budweiser ads, the bands get their name mentioned.  My take on this is the Miller bands tended to be less well known acts, whereas the Bud bands already had airplay, and you were expected to be reminded of a recent hit that you'd already heard and recognize them just from their sound.
Yes, you can own his
used clothing...

There are two here I've never heard of (The Joneses, Billy Hill), and two I have (Mason Ruffner, The Rave-Ups).  Hey, the Rave-Ups were Molly Ringwald's favorite band!
We're missing the cues and disc labels on this one, but I put a stack of newspaper articles about the Moscow Peace Concert into a folder for your reading pleasure.

From Wiki:
The Moscow Music Peace Festival was a rock concert that took place in the USSR on 12 and 13 August 1989 at Central Lenin Stadium (now called Luzhniki Stadium) in Moscow. Occurring during the glasnost era, it was one of first hard rock and heavy metal acts from abroad that were granted permission to perform in the capital city, (being the first the ten shows the British band Uriah Heep played from 7 to 16 December 1987 at the Olympic Stadium). Over 100,000 people attended and it was broadcast live to 59 nations including MTV in the United States. The event promoted understanding between the Western Bloc and the Eastern Bloc during the Cold War and also raised money to help those addicted to drugs and alcohol. The concert featured six bands from abroad and three Russian bands. The concert ended with the various band members participating in jam session. An album and documentary were released.

It inspired the 1990 song "Wind of Change" by Scorpions, one of the bands that performed at the concert. The song became one of the best selling singles of all time.

Modeled as a "Russian Woodstock" the concert was a joint production by Russian musician Stas Namin and American music manager Doc McGhee.

The groovy runout grooves say:
BC-82-12-A >  ALSHIRE   L-10219
BC-82-12-B >  ALSHIRE   L-10219-X

The eagle-eyed members of Our Beloved Audience immediately noticed that the runout etchings are 82-12 while the disc label and cue are 82-13.  We double-checked, and yes, the numbers do not match.

Includes 300 dpi scans of the cue sheet, both disc labels, the full front cover (the back cover is a blank white expanse with nothin' on it). Plus! Print ads!  And as a, added bonus, our pal JustDave from The New JDP
(https://thenewjdp.blogspot.com/) took the time to write a guest essay "About Millie Jackson" that's included.

The first thing to cover is that the recording location is unknown, but it is LIKELY to be the Checkerdome in St. Louis, Missouri, on September 12, 1981.

During the program, it's mentioned that it's the Budweiser Superfest.  I checked Discogs, and there's no listing for the 82-13 show, but there's a Budweiser BC 81-9 with Millie Jackson and the O'Jays that says "Budweiser Superfest" right on the disc label.  That's likely to be the same (or similar) set list as this one, but there's no cue sheet on Discogs so I can't check it.

I ran a search for "Budweiser Superfest" on Newspapers.com and found there were ads or listings for three Budweiser Superfests:

Giants Stadium (June 28) Ashford & Simpson, Stephanie Mills, Rick James and the Stone City Band, the Gap Band, Peabo Bryson, Sister Sledge, and Maze featuring Frankie Beverly.

Astrodome (August 22) The O'Jays, Smokey Robinson, Ashford & Simpson, Rick James and the Stone City Band, Maze featuring Frankie Beverly, and Patrice Rushen.

Checkerdome (September 12) The O'Jays, Stephanie Mills, Maze featuring  Frankie Beverly, Peabo Bryson, and "The one and only" Millie Jackson.
From the Kansas City paper...

Millie Jackson only played the Checkerdome show, so that's the most likely source for this concert.

Print ads ran in a very large geography: Ads ran in Kansas City and Decatur, respectively 243 miles and 123 miles from the St. Louis concert.  We do get ads here in the Bay Area for shows in the Reno/Tahoe area, so it's not unheard of...but it's also connected to a gambling/skiing resort vacation destination with lots more to do than see a show.  You can ski in the winter, swim or boat in the summer. This seems like an unusually broad distribution for print advertising for a concert.

If this is from the Checkerdome, the review says, "The Budweiser Superfest on Saturday night broke the Checkerdome concert attendance record by drawing 20,085 people to its epic length - more than six hours - show."  Billboard reported that the concert grossed $206,636.00.

There were articles in the trade magazines that mention possible concerts in Chicago and Los Angeles, but there's no evidence they took plac

Nucleus - Live in Bremen, Germany 1971

Back From The Dead...
Originally posted September 20, 2014

Nucleus - Live Bremen
Bremen, Germany 1971
Soundboard @256
{Out of Print}

The result of a productive continuing partnership between Cuneiform Records and Radio Bremen, this double CD captures a 1971 concert by the Nucleus sextet, led by Ian Carr on trumpet and flugelhorn. Fans of the Soft Machine will be intrigued by the fact that none other than Karl Jenkins (Hohner electric piano and oboe), Roy Babbington (bass), and John Marshall (drums) are all on this recording. All three later left Nucleus to join Soft Machine and helped drive that band after the third line-up change in its history.

Track List:
cd1
1. Song for the Bearded Lady
2. By the Pool
3. Kookie and the Zoom Club
4. Torrid Zone
5. Zoom Out

cd2
1. Snkehips' Dream
2. Oasis/Money Mad
3. Dortmund Backtrack
4. Bremen Dreams
5. Elastic Rock
6. A Bit for Vic
7. Persephone's Jive

This fabulous 2 disc set is a legit release of a concert taped in 1971 for
German radio. We have to thank Cuneiform a hundred times over for locating
and releasing this excellent sounding live concert from one of the greats
of British jazz-rock. The band consists of Ian Carr-trumpet,flugelhorn,
percussion; Karl Jenkins-oboe, electric piano; Brian Smith-saxes, flutes,
percussion; Roy Babbington-bass; John Marshall-drums,percussion; and the
only appearance with the group of guitarist Ray Russell. Brit-jazz lovers
will recognize the name but for those who haven't had the pleasure of
hearing Russell's outstanding fretwork - wow! Imagine Allan Holdsworth
trying to sound like Jeff Beck & playing with Soft Machine in 1971! Nice
liner notes and some archival photos round out this superb release!

A British sextet formed by trumpeter/flugelhorn player Ian Carr in 1969,
Nucleus were articulating their own take on the fusing of jazz and rock
before Bitches Brew hit the streets.  The key difference between the
British unit and their Stateside contemporaries was their attack, which
was markedly less alloyed by jazz practice.  Though the front line of
Carr and saxophonist/flautist Brian Smith had considerable jazz experience
Nucleus were noticeably, if not painstakingly seeking a rock credibility
in their continuous, largely groove-driven sets.

Once again, we excavate lost rock stars of Philadelphia, courtesy of our pal, Sam Eliot's Mustache and his collection of local radio broadcasts.

This one is a band that (as far as I know) never released a record.  Richard Bush had been the lead singer and half of the Notte/Bush songwriting team behind the A's, who'd managed to get two albums out on Arista in '79 and '81.

After the breakup of the A's, he put together the Lion Choir, which included "Michael Pilla from Robert Hazard's Heroes, former A's member Mikey Snyder on drums, Gary Lee on bass, and Michelle Harron (ex Chet Bolins) on keyboards and rhythm guitar." (as per the Philadelphia Daily News)

I had the A's first LP back in 1979 but from the remote vantage point of San Francisco, they were East Coast, didn't tour out here, and I lost track of them.  From listening to this tape, it's clear that Richard Bush was an excellent front man with solid songwriting and a good band.  The songs here were worthy of release.

I've chosen to keep the two commercials at the end of the show as they are for two local nightclubs and there's bound to be someone who finds them of interest.

Born from the tumult of spiritual rebirth and worldly rejection, David Eugene Edwards is a man uncomfortable in the skin he considers a mortal restraint. It’s not to say that the man behind the alternative country act 16 Horsepower and the mercurial but no less influential Wovenhand considers himself above this world. Quite the opposite, actually. Edwards has for years now used the reckoning between his Christian beliefs and the world around him as a conduit to create a music that is utterly earnest and unhindered by listener expectation.

The Garage Tapes Live In The Studio was hosted by Q102 (Dallas/Fort Worth, TX) disk jockey Redbeard. This "Garage Tapes" show was originally distributed by the Album Network, and officially issued as a promo in Canada.  This is a copy of the Canadian promo CD.

The original broadcast presented eleven songs recorded live in early December 1991 at Belmont Mall Studio in Belmont, Indiana.  The promotional CD cover refers to the studio as "The Garage."  On the Album Network broadcast, interspersed with the music were short interviews by Redbeard with Mellencamp and band members.  On the Canadian promo CD, some of the interviews are placed at the end, and set up so that a disc jockey could ask a question and play the pre-recorded answer by Mellencamp, giving the impression that he was there in the studio.

The broadcast also included two songs ("Small Town," "Pink Houses") recorded at Q102 in October.

The Album Network version included a live concert version of "Like A Rolling Stone" recorded in 1987, and "Sweet Suzanne" from the Falling From Grace soundtrack.  These are not included on the Canadian promo CD.

The promotional CD did not identify that "Small Town" and "Pink Houses" were from another date and location.

The music portion was bootlegged on John's Garage Tape (Unbelievable Music UM 002), Live Rehearsals (Kiss The Stone KTS 090), and Welcome To The Garage (Beech Marten Records BM 068)

I forgot to give credit for this one to our pal Matt...one of Our Beloved Audience who sent me the files.

Wet Willie - Live At Tipitina's New Orleans La. 2006

Wet Willie have resurfaced in the 21st century in a slightly amended form, yet still sporting their special finger-lickin' fusion of blues with Southern rock. Previous leader Jimmy Hall isn't with the aggregate as presented on Playing Live Tonight: The Wet Willie Band, recorded appropriately enough at the legendary Tipitina's in New Orleans. However, John Anthony (keyboards/vocals), Jack Hall, Jr. (bass/vocals), and Donna Hall (vocals) circa the "classic" mid-'70s incarnation are present and accounted for. T.K. Lively (drums/percussion/vocals) represents the late '70s Epic Records era lineup and recent recruit Ric Seymour pulls double duty as guitarist and primary singer.

Greg Kihn / Willie Nile "King Biscuit Flower Hours Presents Greg King Band & Willie Nile"

Greg Kihn / Willie Nile
"King Biscuit Flower Hours Presents

Greg King Band & Willie Nile"
Catalog Number on CD spine: DIR 366.2

01 Greg Kihn - Rendezvous
02 Greg Kihn - Girl Most Likely
03 Greg Kihn - The Breakup Song (They Don't Write 'em)
04 Greg Kihn - Sheila
05 Greg Kihn - Madison Avenue

08 Willie Nile - Grenade
09 Willie Nile - Poor Boy
10 Willie Nile - Shoulders
11 Willie Nile - Vagabond Man
12 Willie Nile - Golden Down
13 Willie Nile - Hide Your Love

As a Kihn collector, I couldn't pass this unusual CD up when I spotted it on EBAY.  On first glance, it looked like one of the officially released King Biscuit Flower Hour Records CDs issued in the late 1990s. The KBFH logo is used, as is the "In Concert" title.

Closer examination reveals differences.

There are several misspellings, such as the plural on "Hours" on the front cover of the CD.  Song titles are off; "Rendezvous" is "Rendevous."  Well, that's French, and their spelling is tricky.  "Can't Stop" is "Can't Stop Hurting Myself," but that's forgivable.

Where I draw the line is "B's Song" for "The Breakup Song (They Don't Write 'em)."

That screams "bootleg" to me.

Plus, as if that's not enough, King Biscuit Flower Hour Records did not issue "two artist" CDs that were duplicates of an original broadcast, stripped of commercials and Bill Minkin's announcements.  They presented one artist only, usually in a longer release than the original radio show.

Anyway...a duplicate of the original radio show's live material is what this is.

It's a copy of "Greg Khin Band / Willie Nile King Biscuit Flower Hour D.I.R. Broadcasdting - 366 Air Date: May 10, 1981"

Greg Kihn was recorded live at the Savoy, New York City, NY, USA, 26 April 1981
Willie Nile was recorded live in New York, NY, USA, 14 April 1981

And yeah, the original King Biscuit LP had it as "Khin."

Another from the fabulous Sam Eliot's Mustache Collection.

This one is from WLIR-FM, out on the eastern end of Long Island.  For the heck of it, I tossed in some vintage newspaper mentions of the radio station.

So...here's a question for the New Yorkers in the audience:
How far did WLIR reach?  Could you hear it in northern New Jersey?

From Discogs:
Matrix / Runout (Side A, Etched): KB-431-A MCR Joe
Matrix / Runout (Side B, Etched): KB-431-B MCR Joe
Matrix / Runout (Side C, Etched): KB-431-C MCR Joe

Note: the "Joe" is a cursive script squiggle, also interpreted as Bre, gre, SRE or Joe.
MCR stands for "Master Cutting Room," and the squiggle for Joe Brescio, the mastering engineer. As his first name is "Joe" and last name starts with "Bre" it's possible he intended it to be both.

Another from the Sam Eliot's Mustache Collection.

The scans of the disc labels are from Discogs, so they're a bit blurry.

There is a longer version of the Krokus set up at Concert Vault.  Concert Vault does not have this ZZ Top show posted.

"Dust My Broom" is listed as "Blues Jam" on the cue sheet.

I found a newspaper article from the Austin American Statesman that says, "tonight's who at the Erwin Center will be the first Austin appearance in eight years, which dryly refers to itself as "the little 'ole band from Texas."
