Country Style USA was a radio program syndicated by the US Army Band and Recruiting Services and broadcast as a recruiting tool for them.

Produced by the U.S. Treasury Department in the 1940s and 1950s as a public service program, Guest Star features a different often top-name "guest star" (singer, actor, comedian) each week to promote the sales of savings bonds

Previoulsy circulated with incorrect dates of 1958 & 1959. listening to talk n these and doing a bit of digging around determined to be earlier broadcast than originally circulated as

*13 . Get Rhythm " Our Latest Release on Sun" - recorded 1956
released as the B side of Walk The Line - April 2 1956

Difficult to pin down an actual date on this - the website  http://www.otrsite.com/logs/logc1075.htm starts at episode 39 broadcast 07-05-1956 - these would have been recorded at least a couple weeks before broadcast - it is very possible that a May - June 1956 recording date is correct here since that would be correct time in regards to a latest release

1959-06-28  Guest Star best guess per http://www.otrcat.com/guest-star-radio-p-1350.html

Yes you will find these programs for sale online , however these programs were produced by the US Government originally and as such have fallen into the public domain

Rosanne Cash - Westwood One Presents #89-37 - Bottom Line, NYC

Rosanne Cash
Westwood One Presents #89-37
for broadcast September 4, 1989
run out groove: L-89-37-1
run out groove: L-89-37-2

Another mystery to track down:

The announcer, Jim Duncan, says this was recorded at the Bottom Line, New York City, NY. The 1989 broadcast date of this syndicated radio show is not the date the show was recorded.

The setlist also matches the Live From Gilley's setlist for L 88-22 broadcast on May 23, 1988, so the show was definitely not recorded in 1989.  (Note that the Live From Gilley's shows were not always recorded at Gilley's).

The archive of Bottom Line shows at http://www.bottomlinecabaret.net/tline_index.html
does not list a Rosanne Cash show for 1988 or 1989.  It does list a show from November 24, 1987, so that is likely the source date of this show.

There was a bootleg CD named Rosanne Cash – At The Bottom Line on the Royal Sound Music label (RSM 006) which also says this was from 1988, but I say they're wrong.

Digitized directly from the syndicated radio disc Dec. 2018.

300 dpi scans of the disc labels and cue sheets!

No year is listed on the cue sheet, but it's from the early 1980s, most likely in 1983.  Mr. Friedman was featuring songs from his 1983 LP, "Under The Double Ego."

On Discogs, there is an album entitled "Live From The Lone Star Cafe."  I don't have copy but it's likely these are the same songs from the same show...however, this radio show has three songs not listed "People Who Read People Magazine," "Fraulein," and "The Ballad of Charles Whitman."

There's no date listed on the release on Discogs.  A search on Newspapers.com found proof that Mr. Friedman played the Lone Star Cafe in 1983 on September 20th and December 3rd.

The promo says it includes guests Tompall Glaser and NBC's Don Imus but I don't hear either of 'em on the show.

Friedman first came along in the early 70's when he was too weird for country radio and too country for rock radio...which was unfortunate for his career.  I recall a review that referred to him as "the Frank Zappa of Country Music," which is a poor comparison.  While Friedman uses humor in his best known songs, he also can write with a sincerity not present in Mr. Zappa's lyrics (and Friedman's music exhibits none of Zappa's technical prowess).

While this includes several of his humorous (and/or controversial) songs, most of it is committed, sincere country and western music (although...does anyone else hear the two-chord vamp of "Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way" as sounding very much like the Velvet Underground's "Heroin?")

There's not a lot of live Friedman circulating, so I'm glad to have won the bid for this LP on Ebay, and to have a chance to share it with you.

Also, of note:  Mr. Friedman does his infamous "The Ballad of Charles Whitman," a surprising choice for a national radio broadcast. Whitman was the infamous Texas Tower Sniper who killed seventeen people and wounded dozens of others in 1966.

Let's see...what else?  Oh, a vintage XEROX ad for an early personal photocopier, by Celtics star John Havlicek!  Plus announcing by New York City disk jockey, Dan Daniel, "known on the air as Dandy Dan Daniel and Triple-D."

"Top 40" in your town wasn't the same as in my town.  There was the NATIONAL USA Top 40,
but that's not what we heard...we heard what was on the local
radio, and that may have been very different.

For example... consider Jerry Jeff Walker. He never had a Top 40 hit.  But he was a hit in certain markets.

I direct your attention to the wonderful ARSA website at http://las-solanas.com/arsa/

This great site compiles LOCAL charts of hundreds of radio stations.  Do you remember those
little radio surveys distributed by every radio station at your record store back in the 60's and 70's?
Well, this site compiles them into a database.

To see all the data, you have to register, but go ahead and do it...they don't send you a bunch
of SPAM if you sign up.

Now, the data isn't perfect, they only track what's been uploaded, so there are gaps, and those surveys fell out of style so the data is better for the 60's and 70's and isn't much use after that.

For a guy like Jerry Jeff Walker...with NO Top 40 Billboard Hits...search under the ARTIST category, and you find 168 radio surveys for "Mr. Bojangles," and 30 surveys for "L.A. Freeway."  You can sort
by chart position:  "Mr. Bojangles" was Top Ten in San Francisco, "L.A. Freeway" was NUMBER ONE in Sacramento, CA on two stations (KNDE and KROY) and was Top 10 in San Francisco and Dallas/Fort Worth.

Where I grew up (Northern California), Jerry Jeff actually had hits.  The ARSA site has also been very useful to me in tracking down songs that were regional hits, and has helped me learn a lot more about 1960s R&B.

Anyway... here's a Live From Gilleys syndicated radio show of Jerry Jeff Walker & the Lost Gonzo band playing at Gilley's ("the worlds largest night club") back in 1985.  The vinyl was a bit rough, but I cleaned it up as best I could.  I've included a scan of the very inaccurate cue sheet, and the scarred and defaced record label.  Why write on the label AND attach a sticker?  Pick one or the other, not both.

Flac files of wavs.  This version digitized December 2017.

Bobby Bare's long career started with rock and roll releases in the 1950s.  He had a notable snafu with his first self-penned hit, "The All American Boy."  Bare made a demo for Bill Parsons to teach him the song, Capitol Records pressed up Bare's demo instead of Parson's take, but credited the record to Parsons.  The incorrectly credited song went to #2 in the U.S.A. and #22 on the British charts, and still shows up as a hit for Bill Parsons.

In the 1960's, Bare moved from rock n' roll to straight country, and had a string of hits, including some that crossed over to the pop charts.  These pop cross-overs led to Bare's inclusion in Dave Marsh's 1989 book, The Heart of Rock and Soul: The 1001 Greatest Singles Ever Made.  Marsh listed two entries by Bobby Bare, both from 1963: "Detroit City" at #337 and "500 Miles Away From Home" at #901.

While it wasn't included in Marsh's list, Bare had another hit in 1966 that's become a
standard.   Bare recorded the original hit version of "Streets of Baltimore," a song written by Tompall Glaser and Harlan Howard in 1966.  While there were many cover versions,
an early 1970's cover by Gram Parsons is a definitive version, and was recently topically featured on the HBO series The Wire, as the show is set in Baltimore.

In the mid to late 70's, Bare had a series of humorous novelty hits, including "Numbers," "The Winner," and the sublimely ridiculous "Dropkick Me, Jesus."  (Note:  The word "tempestion" appears to have been entirely made up just for this for this song.)

This syndicated show was produced by the Clayton Webster Corp. of St. Louis, Missouri.  Incorporated in January of 1978, the Clayton Webster Corp. also produced the "Retro Rock" show, syndicated from 1981 to 1984.  The "outro" to the show says that the Live From The Lone Star Cafe show was carried on "more than 200 American radio stations...every week," which gives us an approximate number of copies pressed.  The numbering sequence on the shows included a three letter code of "LSC" followed by a year and and an ascending show number:  LSC-7901, LSC-7902, LSC-7903, etc. I've seen copies of Live From The Lone Star Cafe series with numbering indicating the show ran from 1979 to 1981. It looks like Clayton Webster got out of syndication of live concerts by the mid-80s.

Flac files of wavs, and I've included a scan of the disc label.
