The Rolling Stones played Giants Stadium in East Rutherford on August 12, 14, 15, and 17, 1994.In December 2010, the Westwood One Superstars In Concert syndicated radio show featured songs drawn from those performances. The songs chosen for inclusion by Westwood One are pretty much what you’d expect from a radio show – the usual big hits. It’s the Stones, it’s sourced directly from the original radio disc, and I included a scan of the cue sheet. I can’t find anything that indicates that Westwood One broadcast material from Giants Stadium prior to 2010.

This is a duplicate of the set, with no editing.  I extracted the wav files, compressed to flac, and named the files.  Other than that, I didn't normalize volume, this is a duplicate of the discs.  The tracks are chaptered by Westwood One.  I didn't move any of the editing points, or break out announcers from the music.  Everything is the way Westwood One created it. I've included 300 dpi scans of the discs and the cue sheet.  I took scans of the CD matrix numbers. As they can only be read from underneath, I provided mirrored images to make it easier to read.

First of all, let's start with words of wisdom from Keith Richards.  Mr. Richards was 54 at the time. 

"...we're late bloomers, I guess, we look at each other and (mumble) how long we been doin' this, how come this, it's getting easier, though, yeah yeah yeah, the joy of all this is really is playin' with the same guys, for all this and other time because there's nothing that can... to a musicians that can play together there's nothing like playing together for a long, long time, you get to know, you know, everybody's body here, just uh every little move every little body talk, you know and every little wink and look and you get more and more and you sort of know each other on another level, which is like the playing level, and dizz and eh it's a blessing, you know uh it's an extra in life to be able to go out with the same guys and keep honing it down and say come on yeah we're getting there, we're getting there boys y'know hey but everybody feels like they, we're still looking for the Stones, we're still looking for 'em."

This one is an unusual item.

First of all, the Rolling Stones played Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, California on February 3, 1998. Westwood One broadcast the concert nationally by satellite.  National and local commercials were inserted into the live show. The ads were added by tape-delaying the concert. Hosts were Coe Lewis and John Leslie from San Diego's KGB-FM. I digitized my master copy of the live broadcast and it's in our archives at V-W, complete with commercials.

This is not from the live broadcast.  It's a 3-cd set of the broadcast without commercials.  The cd's have a custom design copied from the BRIDGES TO BABYLON album cover.  Lewis & Leslie's announcements are included, but no ads. There's a cue sheet, but no affidavit.  The cue sheet does not have a broadcast date, but has the concert date on it.  It's written as if it's part of a long title, "The Rolling Stones Concert Special  Live In San Diego  February 3, 1998."

Usually, the date on the Westwood One cue sheet is the date of the broadcast, not the date of the concert itself.  The CDs were not used for the original broadcast. There are no commercials on these CDs.

The songs are chaptered, not in big blocks of several songs run together as on Westwood One's Superstars In Concert shows.

The discs have "MADE IN THE USA BY METATEC CORPORATION" on the run-out.  Metatec is known to have manufactured discs for Westwood One.  If it didn't say Metatec, I would suspect this of being a bootleg. 

We think this may have been issued as some sort of promotional item, or perhaps for non-comm (non-commercial) stations...although both explanations would be unusual for Westwood One.  We're not aware of other examples.

To add to the confusion, we saw a variation on Ebay using the same custom disc design, but WITH commercials.  The cue sheet says "THE ROLLING STONES LIVE IN SAN DIEGO Show #98-06 for broadcast the week of February 2, 1998." The cue sheets have commercials matching the ads on the live broadcast.

While I haven't examined this second version in person, it raises some questions.  A broadcast window starting on February 2nd for a show taking place on February 3rd is odd.  The show number of #98-06 was used for a John Mellencamp show aired the week of January 26, 1998.  The fonts on the affidavit look real to me.  Bootlegs and pirates would have no reason to include the commercials.  So it looks real, but the broadcast date isn't possible.

Announcer John Leslie died on New Years Day January 2000 in the shower of his home.  His body was not discovered until January 11.  Death was attributed to alcohol abuse and poor nutrition.  "Friends say John had been drinking heavily since being fired from KGB last summer."  So...two years after hosting the Rolling Stones national live broadcast, he was dead.

Coe Lewis lasted on KGB until 2020.  She's on Facebook.

Okay, gang, here's one for the archives.

This is an off-the-air copy of the Rolling Stones concert of February 3, 1998 from Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, California.   Hosts are Coe Lewis and John Leslie from San Diego's KGB-FM.

Westwood One broadcast the concert nationally.  There were breaks where national commercials were inserted into the show, with slots left for local commercials after the block of national ads.

Here in the Bay Area, the broadcast was carried by San Francisco's KFOG-FM, so you get Lake Tahoe ski resort ads (it was February...) and KFOG promotions.  On another radio station, you would have different local spots.

It's roughly 2 hours of music interspersed with 40 minutes of advertising and announcements.  The commercial breaks were 5 to 6 minutes long.  My understanding is breaks were added by tape-delay.  I recall reading that people attending the concert were able to hear the encore on the radio as they were leaving the concert, but I haven't tracked down a hard copy of that reference.  

The insertion of local commercials into a broadcast being delayed means there are a few fumbles along the way. At several of the transitions from the local commercials back into the national broadcast you can hear that KFOG ran a few seconds late, and they're running over the national hosts who are already doing the segment introduction. 

All the commercials and breaks are tracked so you can skip over or delete them.

MCR stands for "Master Cutting Room," and the squiggle for Joe Brescio, the mastering engineer. As his first name is "Joe" and last name starts with "Bre" it's possible he intended it to be both.

While the cue sheet says "recorded at the Silverdome in Pontiac, Michigan," this is not only not true, it's ridiculous because the stage announcer starts the show by saying, "Washington D.C we thank you very much for waiting, would you welcome please the Rolling Stones."  

But Washington is not where the entire show was recorded, or even where the track after the introduction (Under My Thumb) was recorded.  After an obvious splice where you hear the "Under My Thumb" riff start, stop, and start again...you get Under My Thumb from East Rutherford.

The blog author Nico was instrumental in figuring out the source of all of these tracks and was kind enough to put up with my incessant inquiries about variations in the various versions of Beast of Burden.

So....if the tracks are NOT exclusively from Pontiac (as on the cue sheet), or from Washington (as the announcer says), where were they recorded?

The tracks are sourced from 1981 shows at East Rutherford, NJ,  Rosemont, IL ("Chicago"), Hampton, VA,  Pontiac, MI ("Detroit"), Largo, MD ("Washington, D.C."), New Orleans, and Tempe, AZ ("Phoenix"). 

Using The Complete Works website, the 1982 Supergroups show contains the same tracks as the Still Life album, a Still Life B-Side (Beast of Burden), plus the additional tracks Black Limousine, Hang Fire, Jumpin' Jack Flash, Let It Bleed, Miss You, She's So Cold, and You Can't Always Get What You Want.  

The Still Life tracks were edited and overdubbed, and the versions on the 1982 Supergroups shows have the same overdubs and edits.  I came to a similar conclusion as AussieRocker...the radio shows could be renamed Still Life Revamped, Still Life Expanded, Still Life Deluxe, etc.  

My version is a replica of the radio discs, including all commercials, disk jockey chatter, reference tone, etc.

I chose to follow the DISCOGS track breakdown as much as possible.  The Discogs entry has "Rolling Stones – Interview Segment" after track 7 (Emotional Rescue) but there's nothing there like an interview.  Tracks 31 and 32 are reversed on the vinyl (that is, Discogs has it as Segment Break followed by Interview Segment, and it's the opposite.

I did not digitize the vinyl.  I was sent the unprocessed files by an internet friend.  He didn't have scans included, but I found 72 dpi scans on Discogs.

The show is about 85 minutes long, but only 2 LPs were used.  While 2 LPs was the standard for KBFH 60 minute shows, they were pushing the limits on a 33 1/2 LP.  Side C is 23 1/2 minutes long.  The vinyl source was heavily worn with a lot of surface noise.  Normally I don't take a "brute force" approach to click removal, but this one required multiple passes of Click Fix to clean it up.
The only real reason to listen to this is for the interviews.  The tracks are available on official releases in far better sound.  As the interviews are faded in and out of the music, I chose to place the breaks so that the interviews are fully on the tracks, and the music is less than the full track.

So...yeah...this is not up to my usual standards.  The recording is still noisy, the scans are lower resolution than my usual 300 dpi.  But it's of interest to Rolling Stones collectors, and the price range on Discogs ($59.99 to $217.09) and the last time sold (August 2021) tells me most of us have never seen a copy.....so here ya go!

One more thing:  while this says "Rolling Stones," Keith Richards is NOT there.

The disc jockeys present are Mark Parenteau from WBCN in Boston, (who was later sentenced to three years in federal prison for sexual child abuse, and who passed away in 2016), Norm Winer from WXRT in Chicago (who quit being a DJ in 2016 after 37 years at WXRT), Tempi Lindsey from KTXQ in Dallas, Jack Snyder from KMET in Los Angeles and Charlie Kendall from WMMR in Philadelphia (who later appeared as a regular host of Westwood One's Superstar Concert Series). The entire group met at the WNEW studios in New York, where they all sat around a table drinking, smoking, telling stories and asking / answering questions from the various DJs. Some questions from "fans" are also presented, but no call-in audience members are present. One can actually hear cigarette lighters clicking, beer cans popping open and being poured, and glasses clinking throughout the show. Tracks from the most recent Stones album at the time, The Rolling Stones - Emotional Rescue, were also featured during the show. Original commercial blocks are also included."

Prior to the Tattoo You Tour, the Rolling Stones rehearsed at Long View Farm recording studios in North Brookfield, Massachusetts from August 14 through September 25. During that time, journalist Lisa Robinson interviewed Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Bill Wyman, and Ron Wood for the ABC Rock Radio Networks "Super Groups In Concert" program.

When the Super Groups series started in 1979, the shows featured a few short interview segments, but this had been discontinued. The presentation was live music, interspersed with national commercials, without interviews.  This Rolling Stones show is unusual for Super Groups in that it not only reverts to the original format, but includes far more interviews, some studio tracks from the new album, and older live recordings.  It's not "in concert" at all. 

In the case of "Time Is On My Side," the recording dates back to the screaming riots of the mid-60s.  The rest is pulled from the 1978 (and possibly 1973) tours, as those were recorded for the King Biscuit Flower Hour...which, like Super Groups, was produced by DIR Broadcasting Corporation, giving them access to the same pool of live tapes.  

This digitization is as of October 31, 2021...exactly forty years to the day from the original broadcast date.  I bought two copies of this show on EBAY...the first was worthless as a source, as it was in terrible condition. The second copy had groove noise...but no skips and was usable.  I cleaned it up as best as I could, but this is a below my normal standards.  It will have to do until I track down a mint condition version of the LPs (and win the auction...I just got outbid on a Ted Nugent Captured Live! at $76.00...jeez...I have my limits on what I'll spend.)

As an experiment, I chose to follow the "Discogs.com" track listing as much as possible.  I had to make a few exceptions, as breaking out Tony Pigg's "segment breaks" sometimes resulted in tracks that were only 1 second long.  The program I use to burn CDs doesn't allow tracks shorter than 4 seconds, so I kept those as part of a longer track.  Several of the interviews overlap with the music, so I had to use my best judgement on where to place the track breaks.  

Tony Pigg was a deejay for WPLJ-FM in New York City, which (like Super Groups) was owned by ABC.

The Rolling Stones were featured four times on Super Groups:

September 4, 1982 (a "best of" show, three songs)
March 19, 1983 (Detroit, Chicago, Tempe, and Washington D.C.)
