There were THREE broadcasts of the Palladium concert in the U.S.A.:
1) the original Starfleet Blair/NBC The Source live satellite radio broadcast on December 31, 1980.
2) The edited NBC The Source NBC 82-6 of Feb. 19, 20, 21 1982 (this show).
3) The edited Captured Live! CL 1283 broadcast on October 10, 1983 (mis-identified by host Perry Stone as being from Providence, Rhode Island).

As I mentioned on Joe Walsh / Dallas show (aired by the Source and King Biscuit), it was unusual for competing networks to carry the same concert.  That may explain why the Captured Live! show is chopped up and reordered and claimed to be from another city.

The Source show closely matches the running order of the full live broadcast, but is missing "I'm Not Like Everybody Else," "C'mon Now," and the closing number "Superman."

The Captured Live! version is missing "I'm Not Like Everybody Else" and "Give The People What They Want" but includes "C'mon Now" and "Superman."  The Captured Live! version, though, re-orders the tracks so that it bears no obvious relation to the two other versions.

The broadcast was fraught with drama.  Starfleet Blair originally intended to broadcast the Allman Brothers, but their manager Steve Masursky insisted New York City be left out of the broadcast because the New York affiliate was WPLJ, and the Allmans were loyal to Scott Muni at WNEW.

So Starfleet Blair signed up the Kinks instead.  Three weeks before the show Ray Davies insisted Starfleet not broadcast in New York, Boston, and L.A. and Starfleet threatened a lawsuit.  The Kinks management kicked in money to help cover the national advertising revenue lost, and show went on...but not in New York, Boston, or Los Angeles.

There's a bit of irony in not running the Allman Brothers minus New York but ending up running the Kinks minus New York, Boston, and Los Angeles, but that's show biz for ya. 

Even more ironic is the live broadcast boosted sales of the Kinks then current album, "One For The Road," from "3,000 units per week before Christmas to 9,000 a week after the concert."  Sales before Christmas are normally very strong due to holiday gift-giving, so tripling sales is a big deal. How many sales did Ray miss by cutting out a quarter of the national radio audience?

The show was also taped and given to BBC Radio One in England, and also to radio services in the Netherlands and Germany.

A bootleg of this named "Another One For The Road" was issued in Europe in 1997.  It's missing six tracks as compared to the full original broadcast.

And can any of Our Beloved Audience provide some details on "Mateus At The Palladium?"  That's printed on the ticket, and the entertainment listing says "Bring your own Mateus."  My guess is the winery was a sponsor of the shows.

*NOTES FROM BINKY REGARDING THIS POST

Today's post is an interesting recording, it's not quite a live concert and the information I've found indicates it's probably a rehearsal for a Kinks tour in the early 90's. It's a live session in the studio with songs given some interesting interpretations and different arrangements. There are instrumentals, incomplete songs and some songs played with a loose "lounge-Vegas" vibe to them that makes for a listening experience that you won't find on record. If you're a fan of the Kinks, you'll love this (if you don't have this already), but if you've never listened to the Kinks, maybe start with a greatest hits album and their late sixties stuff first, then you'll get the humour of this.

This is JAM-PACKED with a great performance by the fabulous Kinks, a commercial
for Cyndi Lauper's first starring role in a motion picture, Whitney Houston singing the hell out of a Diet Coke commercial, Max Headroom running for office, and the mellifluous Steven Downes (the voice of Halo's MASTER CHIEF character) holding down the deejay end of it...and a dash of Cajun spice with a vintage Buckwheat Zydeco commercial for Coca-Cola Classic.

According to the book "The Kinks: All Day and All of the Night" by Mr. Doug Hinman (currently available on Amazon), the full set list was:

Mr. Hinman also says, "This recording was back-up for Live From The Fox Theatre broadcast and was used in syndication."

The Fox Theatre broadcast of April 14, 1988 was "broadcast by satellite."  That's unusual...
in that Westwood One did a satellite broadcast just a week after this show was on the air.

Note that Mr. Hinman's set list has songs in a different order than this syndicated show.  Westwood One often re-ordered set lists.

Mr. Hinman says that the version of "You Really Got Me" was included on Westwood One's faux-concert, "The Isle of Dreams 1988," a Labor Day special where Westwood One took concert segments from their archives plus commercially released live recordings to create an imaginary
concert. There were several "Isle of Dreams" broadcasts, starting with an 18 LP version in 1985.
The 1988 version was a 9-LP set, with the Kinks set as listed as "Low Budget/ You Really Got Me/ Lola/ All Day And All Of The Night."  I don't have 1988 Isle of Dreams show, but I'll keep an eye out for it on Ebay.  How do you guys feel about these compilation shows?  As they are usually truncated versions of more complete shows, I've never bothered to digitize them.  I've got a KBFH "best of" show around here somewhere..is there any interest in that?

While Westwood One often repeated shows, it looks like this Milwaukee show was only broadcast one time and not repeated on later syndications.

The concert ends with one of the Ray Davies greatest compositions, "Celluloid Heroes."  While the song didn't see chart action at the time of release, "Celluloid Heroes" has become a beloved rumination on the fleeting nature of pop cultural fame.

On that note, I offer up to you the WONDERFUL Annette Kellerman.  Virtually forgotten today, one hundred years ago Annette Kellerman was voted "the World's Most Perfect Woman" by an American newspaper poll.  Kellerman first gained fame as a swimmer and a daring diver in her native Austrialia, before moving to international fame with a 17 mile
swim from Putney to Blackwall down the Thames River in England.

Competing against seventeen men in a race down the Seine River, Kellerman came in third.

Kellerman was the first woman to attempt to swim the English Channel (although she failed in that effort).

Kellerman parlayed this into a career in vaudeville, lectures, and popular books on fitness and beauty, invented the one-piece bathing suit for women (and got arrested for wearing it)...with the suits being popularly known as "Kellerman suits" well into the 1920's.

The popular author Jack London referenced her in stories.

This was followed by a successful film career, starring in the first film with a $1,000,000 budget, doing her own stunts, and appearing in the first nude scene by a major Hollywood actress.

Kellerman was a star, but stars fade.   But 100 years ago, she was a mega-babe. As Garth put it in "Wayne's World," "If she were a president she would be Baberaham Lincoln."

Of course, Annette Kellerman could not have been president due to the constitutional requirement that you be a natural born citizen of the United States.  But regardless... in 1916, she would have my vote.

Today in 2016...she's got a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6608 Hollywood Blvd:

"You can see all the stars as you walk down Hollywood Boulevard
Some that you recognize, some that you've hardly even heard of."

So it goes.

100 years later....we have forgotten her.

Kinks Supergroups In Concert

Here's the Kinks Super Groups In Concert that was syndicated in 1982.   Or Supergroups In Concert, as they spell it one way on the cue sheet and another way on the record label.

It's a compilation of two shows.  According to Doug Hinman in "The Kinks - All Day and All of the Night: Day-By-Day Concerts, Recordings and Broadcasts, 1961-1996,"  the "Los Angeles" portion of the show was sourced from Feb. 7, 1977 at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium.  This was originally taped for a King Biscuit Flower Hour broadcast syndicated on April 23, 1977.   Hinman says, "Eight recordings subsequently resyndicated on LP as Supergroups In Concert Aug 7 '82."

The other show ("London")  is most likely the same Hippodrome that's up at W0lfgang's Vault.

That leaves two unidentified tracks.  My guess is they're also from Santa Monica, as they're in the setlist for that date and venue, and I think that Mr. Hinman is wrong about only eight tracks from the '77 show being rebroadcast; the number is probably ten.

Sound quality is fabulous!  I declicked the files one click at a time after cleaning the records with Titebond II wood glue.  Full 300 dpi scans of the cue sheet, promo script, and one of disc labels are included.  All commercials are tracked so they can be dropped by those that don't like them.  The only thing I left off was a test tone, other than that, this is a clone of the discs.
