Mort Garson was a visionary Canadian composer whose pioneering work with the Moog synthesizer helped shape the soundscape of electronic music in the 20th century.
Born in Saint John, New Brunswick in 1924, Mort Garson’s musical journey began with classical training at Juilliard, followed by early success as a pop arranger and songwriter. He co-wrote the 1963 hit “Our Day Will Come” for Ruby & the Romantics, a tune later covered by artists ranging from Frankie Valli to Amy Winehouse.
Mort Garson adopted a series of evocative aliases throughout his career, each tailored to the mood and concept of his electronic experiments. As Lucifer, he released Black Mass (1971), a dark, occult-themed Moog album that blended eerie textures with ritualistic flair. Under the name Ataraxia, he explored paranormal phenomena and psychic themes on The Unexplained (1975), pairing lush synths with mysterious spoken-word elements. His sensual side emerged as Z, with Music for Sensuous Lovers (1971), designed as erotic soundscapes for intimate listening. Earlier, he had recorded The Zodiac: Cosmic Sounds (1967) as The Zodiac, a psychedelic concept album that prefigured the New Age movement. These aliases weren’t just branding, they were portals into distinct sonic worlds, each reflecting Garson’s restless creativity and his commitment to pushing the boundaries of analog synthesis.
But Garson’s true legacy lies in his experimental electronic compositions of the late 1960s and 1970s. He was among the first to embrace the Moog synthesizer, crafting lush, otherworldly soundscapes that blended sci-fi textures, mysticism, and ambient moods. His 1967 album The Zodia, Cosmic Sounds was a psychedelic concept record with spoken-word astrology themes, while Electronic Hair Pieces (1969) reimagined Broadway tunes through analog circuitry.
Perhaps his most iconic work is Mother Earth’s Plantasia (1976), subtitled “warm earth music for plants and the people who love them.” Originally given away with houseplants at a Los Angeles store, the album became a cult classic decades later, celebrated for its gentle, melodic Moog arrangements and its ahead-of-its-time embrace of ambient and new-age aesthetics.
Garson also composed music for television and film, including scoring the CBS News broadcast of the Apollo 11 moon landing in 1969, a fitting assignment for a composer whose work often felt cosmic in scope.
He passed away in 2008 in San Francisco, but his influence continues to grow. With reissues and renewed interest in analog synth music, Garson is now recognized as a foundational figure in electronic music, bridging the gap between pop, psychedelia, and ambient experimentation.
Mort Garson’s score for Black Eye (1974) is a rare and largely unreleased soundtrack composed for the Blaxploitation-era crime thriller directed by Jack Arnold and starring Fred Williamson. The film blends noir tension with urban grit, and Garson’s music reflects that mood, leaning into funk, soul, and suspenseful instrumental cues. The soundtrack was never officially released on vinyl or CD during its original run. However, a private pressing of 15 stereo copies surfaced much later. (B)
