VA - King R&B Box Set [1996] (4 x CDs)

Collectors usually encounter The King R&B Box Set the same way they would an old archive drawer, opening it out of curiosity and then realizing how much history sits inside. Issued across four discs and drawing from the catalogue of King Records, the set gathers recordings made between 1945 and 1966, years when rhythm and blues was still defining its shape. The label’s Cincinnati operation recorded, pressed, and shipped its own records under one roof, and that practical spirit carries through the entire box.

The early stretch places the listener right inside the late-forties rhythm and blues circuit. Wynonie Harris and Roy Brown arrive with the kind of punch that once drove jukeboxes and Saturday night dances. Horns push hard, pianos roll underneath, and the recordings feel immediate rather than polished.

As the sequence settles into the mid-fifties, the character of the label broadens. Groups like The Royals bring tight vocal interplay and guitar driven arrangements, while Hank Ballard adds a tougher rhythmic edge that hints at the rock and soul currents forming around the time. The emotional tone deepens through singers such as Little Willie John, whose recordings show how King’s catalogue moved naturally toward early soul.

Instrumental blues arrives through Freddie King, his guitar lines cutting cleanly through the arrangements. Toward the end, early recordings by James Brown appear not as a grand finale but as a continuation of the sound that had been building across the discs.

CD4 closes in an unusual way. After the final music tracks, the box includes three short interview excerpts featuring King founder Syd Nathan. They are brief, almost offhand conversations, yet they place a human voice behind the label that shaped everything heard before.

Played from beginning to end, the set feels less like a retrospective and more like a long stack of original singles turning on the spindle, each one revealing another corner of the King sound. (B)

My favorite R&B Box set of the last few months... Enjoy

VA - Whatever You Want Bob Crewe's 60s Soul Sounds [2022]

Whatever You Want, Bob Crewe's 60s Soul Sounds is one of those compilations that quietly reveals a world behind the familiar story of 1960s pop and soul. The name that ties it together is Bob Crewe, widely known for his work with Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons, yet this set steps slightly to the side of that narrative and lets the soul material speak in its own rhythm. The twenty-four tracks were issued in 2022 on the Kent label, gathering recordings Crewe wrote or produced during the mid-1960s for a wide circle of singers and studios.

Voices like Ben E. King and Chuck Jackson appear early, reminding you how naturally Crewe’s songwriting could move between church-rooted soul and polished New York studio arrangements. As the disc unfolds, the atmosphere widens. Tracey Dey, Dee Dee Sharp, and Barbara Lewis bring lighter textures that feel connected to the Brill Building world, while the mid-section introduces tougher edges. Mitch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels inject a burst of teenage urgency, and the appearance of James Carr adds a deeper southern weight. None of it feels scattered, the pacing moves naturally between moods, showing how many corners of the soul landscape Crewe’s productions touched. The final stretch leans into reflection. Walter Jackson and Kiki Dee bring warmth and restraint before the Time Keepers close the set with “3 Minutes Heavy”, a brisk, optimistic dancer that leaves the door open rather than sealing the story shut.

This compilation becomes less about a producer’s résumé and more about a moment in the mid-sixties when pop craft and soul feeling often shared the same studio floor. The songs sit comfortably beside one another, waiting for the listener to notice how those worlds overlap. Whether approached track by track or in one uninterrupted sitting, Whatever You Want simply lays out the evidence and lets the listening unfold from there. (B)

BLACK MUSIC

VA - Back to Black, 1900 to 1999 (100 Years of Black Music) [2001] (10 x CDs)

Issued by Universal in 2001, Back To Black, 1900 to 1999  (100 Years Of Black Music) stands as one of the most ambitious century‑spanning surveys of Black music ever assembled. Across ten discs, the compilers trace a lineage that begins with early 20th‑century spirituals and field recordings, material originally documented on fragile 78s and cylinder transfers, and follow that thread through blues, jazz, gospel, R&B, soul, funk, disco, hip‑hop, and contemporary pop. What makes the set compelling from an archival standpoint is its insistence on primary‑source recordings: original label masters, period‑correct mixes, and historically accurate release versions rather than later remasters or anthology edits. For collectors, that alone gives the box a level of integrity many broad surveys lack.

The sequencing is chronological but never rigid. Early blues sides from labels like Okeh, Paramount, and Vocalion sit alongside foundational jazz cuts from Columbia and Decca, giving listeners a sense of how styles overlapped rather than replaced one another. By the mid‑century discs, the focus shifts to the rise of independent labels—Chess, Atlantic, Specialty, Stax, whose singles defined the sound of post‑war Black America. These tracks are presented in their original mono 45 mixes, preserving the punch and immediacy that collectors prize.

The later discs move into the 70s, 80s, and 90s with equal care, documenting the shift from analog soul and funk into electronically driven R&B, early rap 12‑inches, and the crossover era that followed. The compilers avoid the usual over‑licensed hits in favour of historically representative cuts, giving the set a depth that rewards close listening. As a century‑long narrative, it succeeds because it treats Black music not as a genre but as a continuum, innovative, adaptive, and foundational to every major development in modern popular sound.

This Universal compilation it’s an attempt to include most of the forms that Black Music has shaped in a hundred-year period. It sounds strange and it is!

It’s impossible to cover 100 years of evolution in just so many hours, so necessarily the compilation is picky, but at the same time a worthy starting point for those that have interest in Black Music. Enjoy! (John Angelatos)

Please thank John Angelatos for sharing this great box set.
