VA -This Record Is Not To Be Broadcast Vol. 01 & Vol 2 [2008-2010] (5 x CDs)

BANNED BY THE BBC

VA -This Record Is Not to Be Broadcast Vol. 01 & Vol 2 [2008-2010] (5 x CDs)

Based on the Theme, this is a hilarious boxset of three CD's that talks more about RADIO BBC than the records. Some of these recordings are so harmless that you will have to read the comments about Why these were banned. It is nonetheless a fascinating look into the bureaucratic workings of the government body that controlled British broadcasting for so long. Both sets were released on the Fantastic Voyage label.

VA - This Record Is Not to Be Broadcast, 75 Records Banned by the BBC 1931-1957 [2008] Box set: This is a fascinating and entertaining collection of songs that were deemed unsuitable for broadcasting by the BBC for various reasons, such as political, religious, sexual, or moral content. The box set contains three CDs with 75 songs from 1931 to 1957, covering a wide range of genres and styles, from jazz and blues to pop and rock and roll. The songs are arranged chronologically, giving a sense of the historical and cultural context of the time. The collection also features a booklet with detailed notes by Spencer Leigh, a music historian and broadcaster, who explains the reasons behind each ban and provides some background information on the artists and the songs. The collection is a treasure trove of musical gems that reveal the changing attitudes and tastes of the public and the authorities, as well as the creativity and talent of the artists who pushed the boundaries of music and expression. This is a must-have for any music lover who wants to explore the hidden history of British music in the mid-20th century.

VA -This Record Is Not to Be Broadcast Vol. 02, 50 More Records Banned by the BBC [2010]: This is a follow up to the previous collection, featuring 50 more songs that were banned by the BBC for various reasons, such as political, religious, sexual, or moral content. The follow up contains two CDs actually with 51 songs from 1931 to 1962, extending the time period and adding more diversity and variety to the selection. The songs are also arranged chronologically, giving a sense of the historical and cultural context of the time. The collection also features a booklet with detailed notes by Spencer Leigh, a music historian and broadcaster, who explains the reasons behind each ban and provides some background information on the artists and the songs. The collection is a great complement to the previous one, offering more insight and enjoyment into the history and culture of British music in the mid-20th century. This is a great addition to any music collection that wants to discover more of the banned and controversial songs that shaped the musical landscape of Britain. (B)

VA - BBC@100 (1922-2022), The 100 Greatest Original BBC Television and Radio Themes (Super Deluxe Edition) [2022] (4 x CDs)

K's BBC Special

VA - BBC@100 (1922-2022), The 100 Greatest Original BBC Television and Radio Themes (Super Deluxe Edition) [2022] (4 x CDs)

The British Broadcasting Company Ltd was formed on 18 October 1922; 100 years ago (as British Broadcasting Company), 1 January 1927; 96 years ago (as British Broadcasting Corporation).

The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) is a British public service broadcaster headquartered at the Broadcasting House in London, originally established in 1922 as the British Broadcasting Company and evolved into its current state with its current name on New Year's Day 1927. The oldest and largest local and global broadcaster by stature and by number of employees, it employs over 21,000 staff in total, of whom approximately 17,900 are in public-sector broadcasting.

In 1922 the GPO proposed that it would issue a single broadcasting license to a company jointly owned by a consortium of leading wireless receiver manufacturers, to be known as the British Broadcasting Company Ltd, which was formed on 18 October 1922. John Reith, a Scottish Calvinist, was appointed its general manager in December 1922 a few weeks after the company made its first official broadcast. L. Stanton Jefferies was its first director of music. The company was to be financed by a royalty on the sale of BBC wireless receiving sets from approved domestic manufacturers. To this day, the BBC aims to follow the Reithian directive to "inform, educate and entertain".

The British Broadcasting Corporation came into existence on 1 January 1927, and Reith – newly knighted - was appointed its first Director General. To represent its purpose and (stated) values, the new corporation adopted the coat of arms, including the motto "Nation shall speak peace unto Nation". Since its formation in 1922, the BBC has played a prominent role in British life and culture. It is colloquially known as the Beeb or Auntie.

I initially started this project last year (2022) in celebration of 100 years of the BBC.  There has never been a thorough, true representation of so many classic BBC themes all in one place, so it was my challenge to only include 100% original versions, and not the mountain of sub-standard material featured on many TV themes compilations re-recorded by other artists and unknown orchestras.

Yes, there are lots of TV themes albums out there, but so many are padded out with themes that no one remembers, or feature plain dull and boring pieces that no one wants to hear, so it was my goal to only include the most loved and most familiar with tons of absolute bangers!

It proved to be really tough going as many themes have never been officially released on CD and the only way of capturing these was to transfer them from 12" vinyl albums, 7" vinyl 45 singles, DVD, Blu-ray, VHS video tape, audio cassette tapes and even old Shellac, 10", 78 RPM records!

I decided to take a break from the project in late 2022 as it was taking too much time due to extensive internet research and the highly exact millisecond digital editing and splicing together of so many themes into single mp3 files. I recently had some spare time, so I revisited my stack of discs and files in order to make some sense and order of everything. So, after hundreds of hours in pulling this all together, I'm finally proud to present what I consider to be the 100 greatest themes, the most memorable and most loved all featured on BBC Television and BBC Radio over the past 100 years.

I hope you enjoy my selections with this stunning collection having never been compiled previously on this scale, pulling from so many different sources in order to make this happen, and that many happy memories start flooding back.

This 4CD set contains many rare and extremely hard to find tracks. Only the original studio mixes are included, with many tracks featured in their original 7" 45 single form. No later remixes, re-recordings, 'stereo enhanced' or live versions here! Wherever possible, I used the full and complete themes as recorded by the original artists, rather than the usual 30 second or so clips featured on most programmes. Compiled as always using the very latest and highest quality digital remasters (where available), with a considerable number of tracks sourced from the original master tapes for superior sound quality and enjoyment.

VA - 50 Years of the BBC Radio 1 Roadshow, 1973-2023 (Super Deluxe Edition) [2023] (8 x CDs)

50  YEARS AGO  TODAY

VA - 50 Years of the BBC Radio 1 Roadshow, 1973-2023 (Super Deluxe Edition) [2023] (8  x CDs)

The Radio 1 Roadshow was an annual summer event hosted and broadcast by BBC Radio 1 from the 1970s through to the 1990s. The roadshow enjoyed three decades of live broadcasts from beach resorts around the UK. The curtain was brought down on the summer roadshows on July and August 1999, when the BBC replaced them with a series of one-day pop festivals in cities around the UK.

The concept for the Roadshow came from Radio 1 producer and later controller, Johnny Beerling and was envisaged and purchased by Tony Miles, built and maintained by John Dean, with engineers Peter Lucken and Johnny Heritage. The first Roadshow was held at Newquay, Cornwall, on Monday 23 July 1973, and was hosted by Alan "Fluff" Freeman.

Various disc jockeys from the station would visit British towns, usually on the coast, to play a live set, meet local people to play their requests, take part in games and give away "goodie bags" of Radio 1 gifts. Accompanying the DJs were the support crew, led by Tony Miles, nicknamed "Smiley Miley", who had provided the original caravan for the first Roadshow.

Several games were devised especially for participation in by the live audience. Most notable were two that ran throughout the Roadshow's history, 'Bits and Pieces' and 'Smiley Miley's Mileage Game'. In the former, contestants selected from the Roadshow crowd had to name a series of pop hits after hearing a tape containing a dozen or so brief excerpts, the winner being the one who accurately identified the most. In the latter, gamers had to assess how many miles the Roadshow truck had travelled from the previous venue, the one making the most accurate guess being deemed the victor.

The typical roadshow summer season started in July and ran for eight weeks, broadcasting live on Radio 1 from the roadshow locations from 11 am to 12.30 pm each weekday. The first hour from 10 am was a warm-up ahead of the 11 am start of the live broadcast. By the late 70's they became a key part of the summer schedules for Radio 1, and attracted much support during their run.

The largest attendance was at Sutton Park, Birmingham, on Sunday 30 August 1992, when 100,000 fans turned up to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Radio 1 with live performances from bands including Del Amitri, Aswad, The Farm and Status Quo.

In the early 1990s several attempts were made to modernise the Roadshow. Under Matthew Bannister, for example, in 1993 and 1994, the station commissioned an independent production company to make an audio postcard for each venue in advance of the Roadshow's arrival in that place. 36 whistle-stop "2 Minute Tours" were made each year, and broadcast several times in the 24 hours leading up to the Roadshow proper, in order to give a wider reflection of life in each place.

By the mid-1990s the Roadshow had expanded to 54 live dates over 9 weeks. Two trucks reversed back-to-back to form a 75-foot stage front. Chris Hopkins was one of the last warm up DJ's on the roadshows replacing Smiley Miley.

The final old-style Roadshow was held at Marine Parade, Brighton with Chris Moyles in 1999. As part of reforms to the station, the Radio 1 Roadshow was axed in favour of a series of one-day pop concerts, called One Big Sunday. These have now been replaced by a single two-day event called BBC Radio 1's Big Weekend. The style of the event is more akin to a standalone music festival than the broadcasting-based shows of old. The emphasis is on current artists and new music.

Since the Radio 1 Roadshow's demise, some of the crew that were behind the roadshow's success have subsequently purchased some of the old roadshow vehicles, and are using them as stages for many local radio station roadshows.

So, after exhaustive and extensive online research, plus my own recollections and memories, here is my personal compilation of what I consider to be the greatest hits of 1973 featuring 170 big smashes we all sang along to at the summer Roadshow's and is fully representative of what was being played on BBC Radio 1 at the time.

How many Radio 1 Roadshow 'Bits and Pieces' can you name?!:
