VA - Rock-A-Billy Cowboys [2012] (10 x CDs)

Issued in 2012 by Documents / Intense Media, Rock-A-Billy Cowboys gathers a huge sweep of country-rooted rockabilly recordings into a set that feels less like a formal anthology and more like a late-night regional radio broadcast from the 1950s. Spread across ten discs, the collection follows the point where country music, western swing, hillbilly boogie, and early rock and roll were still overlapping rather than separated into fixed styles.

The atmosphere arrives quickly. Slapped bass, sharp electric guitar, train-beat rhythms, and fast-moving vocals carry most of the momentum, but beneath the energy there is still a strong country foundation. Many of these recordings come from small labels and local scenes, which gives the set a rough immediacy that polished rock and roll compilations often lose.

What makes the box hold together is the consistency of feel. Unknown artists sit beside recognised names without disrupting the flow. One track leans toward honky-tonk, another toward straight rockabilly, then a novelty number or dancehall rocker appears, but the sequencing keeps the sound connected. Rather than tracing a clean history, the set captures a living musical environment where styles were still shifting from session to session. Repetition becomes part of the appeal. Similar rhythms, echo-heavy vocals, and twanging guitar lines return again and again, but each performance carries slight differences in phrasing and tone. Those details accumulate over time.

Left to play, the collection becomes immersive rather than archival. It captures the roadside clubs, small studios, jukebox singles, and regional radio sound that helped shape early rock and roll before the music hardened into something more commercial and defined. (B)

VA - That'll Flat... Git It! Vol. 01- Vol. 51 (51 x CDs)

ROCKABILLY BONANZA

VA - That'll Flat... Git It! Vol. 01- Vol. 51 (51 x CDs)

That’ll Flat… Git It! Vol. 01-51 is a towering monument to rockabilly’s raw pulse and regional diversity. Released by Bear Family Records over nearly three decades, this 51-volume anthology (so Far) digs deep into the vaults of dozens of American labels, from Sun and Starday to Challenge, Jackpot, and beyond, unearthing hundreds of tracks that defined, and defied, the genre’s boundaries between 1954 and the early 1960s.

Each volume is built around a specific label or regional scene, offering a curated snapshot of how rockabilly evolved in different corners of the U.S. The series doesn’t just spotlight the stars, it celebrates the obscure, the one-shot wonders, and the local legends who cut a single side and vanished. From the hiccupping swagger of Sleepy LaBeef to the wild-eyed stomp of Thumper Jones (aka George Jones), the set captures the full spectrum: hillbilly bop, proto-garage, teen rock, and country-fried rhythm & blues.

What makes That’ll Flat… Git It! so essential is its archival rigor. Every disc is packed with tracks, remastered from original tapes or clean vinyl sources, and accompanied by lavish booklets featuring label histories, artist bios, and rare photos. The liner notes are scholarly without being dry, written with the enthusiasm of true believers who understand that rockabilly wasn’t just a genre, but a moment of cultural combustion.

Across the 51 volumes presented here, the series charts the genre’s rise and fragmentation. Early volumes lean into the Sun Records sound, raw, echo-drenched, and Elvis-adjacent, while later entries explore more eccentric terrain, surf-tinged instrumentals, novelty cuts, and regional hybrids that never made the national charts but burned bright in local jukeboxes. It’s a sonic road trip through America’s backroads, dance halls, and garage studios.

For collectors, this is the gold standard. For newcomers, it’s a revelation. And for archivists, it’s proof that Bear Family remains unmatched in its commitment to preserving musical heritage. That’ll Flat… Git It! series is a living archive of rockabilly’s restless spirit, lovingly documented one label at a time. (B)

ROCKABILLY

VA - Rare Fifties Boston Rockabilly - Vol 1- 3 [1995] (3 x CDs)

The Rare Fifties Boston Rockabilly series, volumes 1 through 3, is a wild, unvarnished ride through one of the most overlooked corners of American rock history. Released by Eagle Records in the mid-1990s, these compilations dig deep into the Boston-area rockabilly scene from the late 1950s, unearthing acetates, regional singles, and demo recordings that never made it past local airwaves or high school gym stages. And that’s exactly what makes them so compelling.

This isn’t slick, Nashville-polished rockabilly. It’s raw, scrappy, and full of attitude, the kind of stuff that was cut in tiny studios and pressed in batches of 500, if that. You’ll hear names like Bob Silva and the Silva-Tones, Joe Therrien Jr. and the Sully Trio, Ricky Coyne, The Satellites, and Miles Connor, many of whom never got national distribution but were tearing it up in Boston’s dance halls and teen clubs.

Each volume is packed, we’re talking 30+ tracks per disc, and the sound ranges from primitive rock ’n’ roll to frantic hillbilly stompers. There’s a ton of personality in these recordings, fuzzed-out guitars, slapback echo, and vocals that swing between croon and snarl. Even the novelty tracks and covers have a kind of regional charm that makes them feel alive.

What ties the series together is its archival spirit. These are rescues, preserving a scene that was vibrant but undocumented. For collectors, it’s a goldmine of private press rarities and label obscurities. For fans of early rockabilly, it’s a reminder that the genre wasn’t just happening in Memphis or L.A.,Boston had its own thing going, and it was loud, proud, and totally unfiltered. (B)
