Grachan Moncur III - Mosaic Select 01 [2003]

SUNDAY JAZZ

GRACHAN MONCUR III

Grachan Moncur III - Mosaic Select 01 [2003]

It often comes into focus through the space between notes. A few tracks into this set, the pacing of Grachan Moncur III starts to settle, not rushed, not sparse, but held in a way that gives each phrase room to stand on its own. Issued in 2003 by Mosaic Records, the three discs gather his Blue Note work alongside related sessions, and they hold together through approach rather than chronology.

The trombone doesn’t push forward as a lead in the usual sense. Lines arrive deliberately, often placed slightly off centre, creating a sense of tension that never quite resolves. Around that, the ensembles remain open. Piano, bass, and drums move carefully within the same space, allowing the compositions to unfold without filling every gap.

The structures become easier to follow. Themes appear, shift, and return in altered forms. Nothing is overstated, and nothing is left entirely bare. The balance sits somewhere in between, where composition and improvisation share the same ground.

There isn’t a clear build from one disc to the next. Instead, the material accumulates. Similar ideas surface in different settings, each time approached from a slightly different angle. By the later recordings, the language feels established, not fixed, but familiar enough to follow without effort.

Left to play, the set feels less like a collection of sessions and more like a continuous line of thought, measured, open, and shaped as much by what is left unsaid as by what is played. (B)

Al Cohn, Joe Newman & Freddie Green - Mosaic Select 27 [2007] (3 x CDs)

JAZZ SUNDAY

AL COHN, JOE NEWMAN & FREDDIE GREEN

Al Cohn, Joe Newman & Freddie Green - Mosaic Select 27 [2007] (3 x CDs)

The easiest way into Mosaic Select 27 Al Cohn Joe Newman Freddie Green is to treat each disc as a shift in perspective rather than a step forward. Issued by Mosaic Records in 2007, the set brings together sessions led by Al Cohn, Joe Newman, and Freddie Green, each moving within the same swing-based language but from slightly different angles.

It makes sense to begin with the rhythm. Green’s guitar, often understated, sits at the centre of the feel, even when he is not leading. The pulse stays steady, the phrasing relaxed, and the ensembles leave enough space for the music to breathe. From there, the tone shifts depending on who steps forward. Cohn’s tenor lines move easily through the arrangements, while Newman’s trumpet brings a brighter, more defined edge.

The sequencing does not separate these voices too sharply. Instead, it lets them overlap across the discs, creating a continuity that feels more like a shared environment than three distinct statements. Small group settings sit alongside slightly larger arrangements, but the balance remains consistent, structure and flexibility working together.

What becomes noticeable after a longer listen is how little the music needs to announce itself. Tempos vary, solos come and go, but the underlying approach holds. The set does not build toward a peak or a conclusion. It maintains its ground, letting each performance settle before moving on.

Left to play, it feels less like a collection of sessions and more like a steady run of musicians working within a language they understand completely, returning to it from different directions without needing to change it. (B)

VA - Kenton Present, Bob Cooper, Bill Holman & Frank Rosolino [1999] (4 x CDs)

SUNDAY JAZZ

COOPER, HOLMAN & ROSOLINO

VA - Kenton Present, Bob Cooper, Bill Holman & Frank Rosolino [1999] (4 x CDs)

It helps to think of Kenton Presents Bob Cooper Bill Holman and Frank Rosolino as a set that steps slightly to the side of the main Stan Kenton story. Rather than focusing on the orchestra at full scale, it draws attention to three of the musicians who shaped that sound from within, Bob Cooper, Bill Holman, and Frank Rosolino, and presents their work in a way that feels more personal and contained.

The recordings move between small group settings and arrangements that still carry traces of Kenton’s broader approach. Brass lines remain clean and structured, but there is more room for movement inside them. The pacing reflects that balance. One track might lean toward a carefully shaped arrangement, the next opens slightly, allowing the players to stretch within the same framework.

What becomes clear over time is how distinct each voice is. Cooper’s phrasing sits comfortably within the ensemble, Holman’s writing introduces subtle shifts in direction, and Rosolino’s trombone brings a lighter, more fluid tone. The sequencing lets those differences appear gradually, without separating them into individual statements.

Across the full set, the music holds a steady middle ground. It does not push toward extremes, instead it refines a particular style, one that sits between arrangement and improvisation.

Heard in sequence, the collection feels like a quiet extension of the Kenton world, shaped by the musicians who helped define it from the inside, given space here to speak a little more directly. (B)

Henry Threadgill - The Complete Novus & Columbia Recordings of Henry Threadgill & Air [2010] (8 x CDs)

SUNDAY JAZZ

HENRY TREADGILL

Henry Threadgill - The Complete Novus & Columbia Recordings of... [2010] (8 x CDs)

You can come at The Complete Novus & Columbia Recordings of Henry Threadgill & Air from almost anywhere and it still makes sense. That’s part of what makes this set easy to live with over time. Issued by Mosaic Records in 2010, it gathers the work of Henry Threadgill and Air across eight discs, moving between trio recordings and larger ensemble pieces without drawing hard lines between them.

If you let a few discs play, the thread starts to show. The core trio sound, saxophone, bass, drums, keeps returning, even when the groups expand. Themes appear, drift, and come back in slightly altered shapes. Nothing feels fixed, but nothing feels random either. There’s a quiet logic holding it together.

What makes it open up is time. A first pass might feel a little elusive, but stay with it and the patterns become easier to recognise. The interplay between the players, the way lines overlap or pull against each other, starts to feel natural rather than abstract. Even when the arrangements grow more complex, that sense of conversation remains.

The sequencing helps. It doesn’t force a direction, it just lets the music move between different settings, showing how the same ideas shift depending on who’s playing and how they’re framed.

By the end, it feels less like a box set to work through and more like something you can return to in pieces. Different discs, different moods, same underlying voice, waiting for whenever you feel like stepping back into it. (B)

Lennie Tristano, Lee Konitz & Warne Marsh - The Complete Atlantic Recordings of ... [1997] (6 x CDs)

JAZZ SUNDAY

LENNIE TRISTANO. LEE KONITZ & WARNE MARSH

Lennie Tristano, Lee Konitz & Warne Marsh - The Complete Atlantic Recordings of ... [1997] (6 x CDs)

The first thing that settles in with The Complete Atlantic Recordings of Lennie Tristano Lee Konitz and Warne Marsh is how little it announces itself. Issued in 1997 through Mosaic, the set gathers the Atlantic sessions led by Lennie Tristano, with Lee Konitz and Warne Marsh, and presents them in a way that rewards quiet attention rather than immediate impact.

Across the 6 discs, the music unfolds with a steady, almost private logic. The tempos are often moderate, the phrasing controlled, and the interaction between instruments remains precise without feeling rigid. Piano lines move in measured patterns, while the alto and tenor saxophones trace long, linear ideas that seem to develop in parallel rather than in contrast.

What becomes noticeable after a stretch of listening is the consistency of approach. Even when the group shifts configuration or tempo, the underlying method remains intact. Improvisations are built through extension rather than interruption, each phrase leading naturally into the next without dramatic breaks. The result is a sense of continuity that carries across sessions.

The inclusion of alternate takes deepens that impression. Small variations in timing, emphasis, and structure appear from one version to another, not as corrections but as different paths through the same material. Hearing them in sequence opens the music slightly, revealing how carefully each line is placed.

The set feels less like a collection of performances and more like a sustained exploration. It does not push outward for effect. Instead, it holds its focus, allowing the details to emerge gradually for anyone willing to stay with it. (B)
