When Albums Ruled the World [2013]

VINYL ALBUMS

When Albums Ruled the World [2013]

When Albums Ruled the World explores what is arguably the most important period in popular music history. For over a decade from the late 1960s to the early 1980s, popular music – from rock to soul, folk to reggae – swapped the sketch pad of the 45rpm single for the expansive canvas of the 33 1/3rpm album.

When Albums Ruled the World Between the mid-1960s and the late 1970s, the long-playing record and the albums that graced its grooves changed popular music for ever. For the first time, musicians could escape the confines of the three-minute pop single and express themselves as never before across the expanded artistic canvas of the album. The LP allowed popular music to become an art form - from the glorious artwork adorning gatefold sleeves, to the ideas and concepts that bound the songs together, to the unforgettable music itself. Built on stratospheric sales of albums, these were the years when the music industry exploded to become bigger than Hollywood. From pop to rock, from country to soul, from jazz to punk, all of music embraced what 'the album' could offer. But with the collapse of vinyl sales at the end of the 70s and the arrival of new technologies and formats, the golden era of the album couldn't last forever. With contributions from Roger Taylor, Ray Manzarek, Noel Gallagher, Guy Garvey, Nile Rodgers, Grace Slick, Mike Oldfield, Slash and a host of others, this is the story of When Albums Ruled the World.

It should be noted that despite only two women being interviewed in this documentary there are and were great numbers of women who were enamored with vinyl and who had the knowledge and understanding of the power of vinyl and the packages that made a great album better. Women also purchased these items in huge numbers. I believe the Documentary author had contacted many women to be contributors but most declined to participate.

Enjoy!

VA - Ken Burns Jazz, The Story of American Music [2000] (5 x CDs) + Ken Burns's 10-part television documentary [2000] MP4

JAZZ SUNDAY

KEN BURNS JAZZ

VA - Ken Burns Jazz, The Story of American Music [2000] (5 x CDs) + Ken Burns's 10-part television documentary [2000] MP4

If you set out to create a single anthology that charted all the twists and tributaries of that uniquely American river we call jazz, you couldn't do better than this companion set to the PBS series, Ken Burns Jazz: The Story of America's Music, 94 tracks on 5 CDs licensed from virtually every important label in the history of the music. Includes The Pearls - Jelly Roll Morton; Charleston - James P. Johnson; West End Blues - Louis Armstrong & His Hot Five; The Mooche - Duke Ellington; Singin' the Blues - Frankie Trumbauer & His Orchestra featuring Bix Beiderbecke; Moten Swing - Benny Moten's Kansas City Orchestra; Strange Fruit - Billie Holiday; Three Little Words - Art Tatum; Body and Soul - Coleman Hawkins; In the Mood - Glenn Miller; Take Five - Dave Brubeck; So What Miles Davis; Giant Steps - John Coltrane; Desafinado - Stan Getz & Charlie Byrd, and many more classics.

This five-CD box set is a soundtrack to support filmmaker Ken Burns's 10-part, 19-hour television documentary. Ken Burns Jazz spans nearly a century of jazz styles, from the martial rhythms of James Reese Europe to the soul-jazz of Grover Washington Jr. It includes time-tested classics like Benny Goodman's 1938 classic, "Sing, Sing, Sing"; John Coltrane's chanting 1965 immortal track, "A Love Supreme"; Billie Holiday's blue-ember ballad, "God Bless the Child"; and Ella Fitzgerald peeling off "A-Tisket A-Tasket." Bebop is represented by Charlie Parker's orchestral bop version of "Just Friends"; Thelonious Monk's nocturnal calling card, "'Round Midnight"; and Dizzy Gillespie's "Salt Peanuts" and "Groovin' High." The jazz-instrumentalist-as-singer comes to life on Coleman Hawkins's "Body and Soul" and Horace Silver and the Jazz Messengers' "Doodlin'." Clifford Brown and Max Roach's "I Get a Kick out of You" epitomizes the hard-bop era, while Miles Davis's "So What" stands as the modal masterpiece. The cool school is in session with Chet Baker and Gerry Mulligan dishing out "Walkin' Shoes," and the Modern Jazz Quartet's soulful elegy "Django" straddles all the above musical orbits. As for Django Reinhardt, he's featured on "Shine" with the justly famed Le Quartet du Hot Club de France.

Louis Armstrong's "West End Blues" and "Potato Head Blues" and Duke Ellington's rousing rendition of Billy Strayhorn's anthem, "Take the A Train," and his moody "Solitude" show why they are the Olympian masters of this art form--and the most frequently featured artists in the series. Although Ken Burns tries bringing the music up to date with Wynton Marsalis, Cassandra Wilson, and two jazz-hip-hop-influenced tracks--Herbie Hancock's robotic "Rockit" and the French-language "Un Aige en Danger" by MC Solaar and bass legend Ron Carter--there are significant holes here. After Cecil Taylor and Ornette Coleman, the avant-garde period from the late 1960s to the 1980s is lacking. And aside from the bossa nova hit "Desafinado," Latin jazz is also missing. It's a tough task summarizing jazz in five CDs, and Burns has given us a vibrant and vivid multicolored aural portrait of the music.

This box set is a "must have" for every collector, because of its wonderful sound. It seems that engineers transferred these classic recordings to disk in a way that gives them more clarity and definition. (Amazon)

ROBBIE ROBERTSON R.I.P THE LAST WALTZ [1978]

ROBBIE ROBERTSON R.I.P

THE LAST WALTZ [1978]

Jaime Royal "Robbie" Robertson OC (July 5, 1943 – August 9, 2023) was a Canadian musician. He is recognized for his work as lead guitarist for Bob Dylan in the mid-late 1960s and early mid 1970s; as guitarist and songwriter with the Band from their inception until 1978, and for his career as a solo recording artist.

Robertson's work with the Band was instrumental in creating the Americana music genre. Robertson was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Canadian Music Hall of Fame as a member of the Band, and was inducted to Canada's Walk of Fame, both with the Band and on his own. He is ranked 59th in Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 100 greatest guitarists. As a songwriter, Robertson is credited with writing "The Weight", "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down", and "Up on Cripple Creek" with the Band and had solo hits with "Broken Arrow" and "Somewhere Down the Crazy River", and many others. He was inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame and received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Academy of Songwriters.

As a film soundtrack producer and composer, Robertson is known for his collaborations with director Martin Scorsese, which began with the rockumentary film The Last Waltz (1978), and continued through a number of dramatic films, including Raging Bull (1980), The King of Comedy (1983), Casino (1995), The Departed (2006), The Wolf of Wall Street (2013), The Irishman (2019), and Killers of the Flower Moon (2023). He worked on many other soundtracks for film and television. (Wikipedia)

The Last Waltz was a concert by the Canadian American rock group The Band, held on American Thanksgiving Day, November 25, 1976, at Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco. The Last Waltz was advertised as The Band's "farewell concert appearance", and the concert had The Band joined by more than a dozen special guests, including their previous employers Ronnie Hawkins and Bob Dylan, as well as Paul Butterfield, Bobby Charles, Eric Clapton, Neil Diamond, Emmylou Harris, Dr. John, Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, Ringo Starr, Muddy Waters, Ronnie Wood, and Neil Young. The musical director for the concert was The Band's original record producer, John Simon.

The concert was produced and managed by Bill Graham and was filmed by director Martin Scorsese, who made it into a documentary of the same title, released in 1978. Jonathan Taplin, who was The Band's tour manager from 1969 to 1972 and later produced Scorsese's film Mean Streets, suggested that Scorsese would be the ideal director for the project, and introduced Robbie Robertson and Scorsese. Taplin served as executive producer. The film features concert performances, intermittent song renditions shot on a studio soundstage, and interviews by Scorsese with members of The Band. The soundtrack and DVD were later released.

The Last Waltz is hailed as one of the greatest documentary concert films ever made. In 2019, the film was selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the United States National Film Registry for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" (Wikipedia)

SIXTO RODRIGUEZ R.I.P. Searching For Sugar Man [2012]

SIXTO RODRIGUEZ R.I.P.

Searching For Sugar Man [2012]

Sixto Diaz Rodriguez (July 10, 1942 – August 8, 2023), known professionally as Rodriguez, was an American singer-songwriter from Detroit, Michigan. Though his career was initially met with little fanfare in the United States, he found success in South Africa, Australia (touring the country twice in his earlier career), and New Zealand. Unbeknownst to him for decades, his music was extremely successful and influential in South Africa, where he is believed to have sold more records than Elvis Presley, as well as other countries in southern Africa. Information about him was scarce, and it was incorrectly rumored there that he had died by suicide shortly after releasing his second album.

In the 1990s, determined South African fans managed to find and contact Rodriguez, which led to an unexpected revival of his musical career. This was told in the 2012 Academy Award-winning documentary film Searching for Sugar Man and helped give Rodriguez a measure of fame in his home country. In May 2013, Rodriguez received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from his alma mater, Wayne State University, in Detroit.

Rodriguez lived in Detroit's historic Woodbridge neighborhood, through which he is seen walking in Searching for Sugar Man. He lived a simple life, possessing no telephone, and occasionally visited bars in the Cass Corridor section of Detroit near Woodbridge and Midtown, such as the Old Miami pub, where he performed live concerts for small local crowds. (Wikipedia)

In the early 1970's, Sixto Rodriguez was a Detroit folksinger who had a short-lived recording career with only two well received but non-selling albums. Unknown to Rodriguez, his musical story continued in South Africa where he became a pop music icon and inspiration for generations. Long rumored there to be dead by suicide, a few fans in the 1990's decided to seek out the truth of their hero's fate. What follows is a bizarrely heartening story in which they found far more in their quest than they ever hoped, while a Detroit construction laborer discovered that his lost artistic dreams came true after all.

Searching for Sugar Man is a 2012 Swedish–British–Finnish documentary film about a South African cultural phenomenon, directed and written by Malik Bendjelloul, which details the efforts in the late 1990's of two Cape Town fans, Stephen "Sugar" Segerman and Craig Bartholomew Strydom, to find out whether the rumored death of American musician Sixto Rodriguez was true and, if not, to discover what had become of him. Rodriguez's music, which had never achieved success in the United States, had become very popular in South Africa although little was known about him in that country.

The film's narrative of a South African story about an American musician omits that Rodriguez was successful in Australia in the 1970's and toured there in 1979 and 1981. South Africans were unaware of his Australian success due to the harsh censorship enacted by the apartheid regime coupled with international sanctions that made any communication with the outside world on the subject of banned artists virtually impossible.

On 10 February 2013, the film won the BAFTA Award for Best Documentary at the 66th British Academy Film Awards in London, and two weeks later it won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature at the 85th Academy Awards in Hollywood.

MUSIC DOCUMENTARY #27 Jeff Beck, Still On The Run [2018] REPOST R.I.P.

MUSIC DOCUMENTARY #27

Jeff Beck,  Still On The Run [2018]                    REPOST

Jeff Beck,  Still On The Run is documentary on the life and musical evolution of Jeff Beck, one of most innovative guitarists in history. The film covers his early days, his tenure with The Yardbirds and The Jeff Beck Group, and his subsequent projects over the decades. Includes interviews with icons such as Jimmy Page, David Gilmour, Rod Stewart, Ron Wood, Slash, and Joe Perry.

Jeff Beck is one of the most innovative and original guitar players of the rock ‘n’ roll era. Never content to rest on his laurels, he is always experimenting with new techniques, new musical styles and new collaborators. “Still On The Run – The Jeff Beck Story” follows his career from early days learning guitar solos with his friend Jimmy Page, through the Yardbirds, the Jeff Beck Group and his multifaceted solo albums. Beck’s fascination with both guitar music and hot rods is explored through interviews at home and in his workshop and his musical journey is illustrated through contributions from many of his fellow musicians and colleagues including Eric Clapton, David Gilmour, Jan Hammer, Jimmy Page, Joe Perry, Slash, Rod Stewart, Ronnie Wood and more. Bonus Features

Five previously unreleased tracks from Jeff Beck’s performance at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 2007: 1) Eternity’s Breath 2) Freeway Jam 3) Nadia 4) Led Boots 5) Blue Wind

The beginning is fantastic, with Jeff and Jimmy Page, his mate, talking about making their own guitars as youngsters, listening to early rock, and trying to duplicate the guitar solos from the records. From those early days, Beck was fascinated with the sound of the electric guitar and was and remains a pioneer of the instrument's sonic capacities. With the Yardbirds he was able to create the sound of the sitar, making a sitar unnecessary. He refused to compromise his artistic integrity, quitting the Yardbirds two gigs into an American tour with a teenybop revue. He broke up the Jeff Beck Group with Rod Stewart shortly before Woodstock because he thought performing would stamp and freeze his sound in 1969 forever.   The documentary skips one of my favorite albums, "Rough and Ready," but focuses extensively on the great jazz/rock fusion albums "Blow By Blow" and "Wired," including interviews with producer George Martin and keyboardist Jan Hammer. The film makes clear how John McLaughlin and his Mahavishnu Orchestra opened Beck's mind to the possibilities of instrumental music (no vocals) which he has mainly pursued ever since. (Amazon)

MUSIC DOCUMENTARY #33 - VA - The Life & Songs of Emmylou Harris an All-Star Concert Celebration Live [2016] + CD

MUSIC DOCUMENTARY #33

VA - The Life & Songs of Emmylou Harris an All-Star Concert Celebration Live [2016] + CD

The Life & Songs of Emmylou Harris: An All-Star Concert Celebration, eld at DAR Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C. The show boasted a set-list spanning four decades of Harris' iconic catalog. Lucinda Williams sang "Hickory Wind," a 1974 Gram Parsons hit later recorded by Harris, who toured in Parsons' band and recorded several albums with the late singer. Another frequent duet partner, Rodney Crowell sang "You're Still on My Mind" - a song he first heard Harris sing when she was playing coffee shops in Washington back in the early Seventies. Vince Gill and Sheryl Crow teamed for "Two More Bottles of Wine," while Shawn Colvin, Patty Griffin and Conor Oberst harmonized on "The Pearl." All were backed by a house band of country greats: Buddy Miller, Don Was, Sam Bush, Audley Freed, Fred Eltringham, Matt Rollings, Greg Leisz and Sara Watkins. Other artists on the bill included Lee Ann Womack, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Chris Coleman, Chris Hillman, Iron & Wine, Alison Krauss, Kris Kristofferson, Daniel Lanois, Martina McBride, the Milk Carton Kids, Herb Pedersen, Shovels & Rope, Mavis Staples, John Starling, Trampled by Turtles, Holly Williams and Emmylou Harris herself, who joined friends on several tunes. Watch her sing "Boulder to Birmingham" with the entire cast below. This once-in-a-lifetime show was recorded for a live album and DVD, which will be released November 11th via Rounder Records. Also available via Blu-Ray and several combo packs, The Life & Songs of Emmylou Harris: An All-Star Concert Celebration was created and produced by Blackbird Presents. (Rounder Records)

When you have been a respected and acclaimed roots artist for as long as Emmylou Harris (her solo major label debut was in 1975 but she was working with Gram Parsons in 1972, she’s won 13 Grammy awards, sold about 15 million albums), it’s likely you’ve made a few friends along the way. So, when it came time for a show focusing on her extensive influence, it probably wasn’t hard for band leader Don Was (who else?) to find a few dozen musicians eager to jump at the invitation.  While some may bemoan yet another of these tributes, especially since both Dr. John and Jerry Garcia ones have appeared in the past month alone, it’s impossible to dismiss the accumulation of talent for this performance, recorded back on Jan. 10, 2015. Even with star power such as Lucinda Williams, Steve Earle, Vince Gill, Mavis Staples, Allison Krauss, Sheryl Crow and others, there are another few dozen names who Harris has worked with, especially as a harmony vocalist over the decades, who could have attended. A few, like Dolly Parton and Ricky Skaggs are conspicuous in their absence. Regardless, there is plenty on this CD/DVD package to satisfy the most demanding country/folk/singer-songwriter fan.  The presentation is as classy and tasteful as Harris has remained through her nearly 40 albums and endless road work over the decades. There are no flowery introductions, and few artists say much about Harris or their association to her. Rather, they just play the songs - most not composed by Harris - that have defined the singer’s extensive if largely hit-free career. (americansongwriter.com)

An absolutely amazing CD and DVD.  No duds on this, even by lesser-known artists. Hard to pick out anything which soared above the generally great performances but Emmylou with John Starling, Herb Pedersen, Sarah Watkins and Sam Bush doing the haunting Kieran Kane song "When we're long, long gone " was outstanding. But for sheer beauty Emmylou's singing Blackhawk with the amazing Daniel Lanois, the writer of the song, harmonizing and playing lovely guitar just will be on endless repeat for me.

MUSIC DOCUMENTARY #32 - David Byrne's American Utopia (2020) MP4 + David Byrne - American Utopia [2018] CD

MUSIC DOCUMENTARY #32

David Byrne's American Utopia (2020) MP4 + David Byrne - American Utopia [2018] CD

In September 2019, an altered version of the concert was previewed at the Colonial Theatre in Boston. It now featured small changes to the setlist and to the structure to achieve a format closer to that of a musical stage production. It premiered on Broadway at the Hudson Theatre in previews on October 4, 2019, and officially on October 20, closing on February 16, 2020. A second run, scheduled to start in September 2020, was postponed by the COVID-19 pandemic. It was eventually moved to the St. James Theatre, where it started on September 17, 2021, and ended on April 3, 2022.  A cast recording of the production titled American Utopia on Broadway was released in 2019 and received a Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album nomination.

A documentary/concert film version of the Broadway production was directed by Spike Lee and released in late 2020, on HBO.

Spike Lee joins forces with David Byrne for a joyous concert movie that rocks and delights, sending you high and then higher.  “David Byrne’s American Utopia” is a joyous expression of art, empathy, and compassion. It is the intersection of two artists—Spike Lee and David Byrne—who have been interrogating how we connect through art for decades. Thirty-six years ago, Byrne and the Talking Heads made one of the best concert films of all time in Jonathan Demme’s landmark “Stop Making Sense.” It feels like such a gift to get this bookend in 2020 when we often feel like we’re further apart than ever. Nothing makes sense anymore. And here comes David Byrne, a man examining connection and the individual role in community through his incredible music, staging it in a way that reminds us that human expression is our most valuable commodity. Director Spike Lee works right alongside Byrne, bringing viewers into the show with his incredible directing, putting us right on stage with these talented artists, and transcending a mere recording of a live event. Byrne and Lee’s utopias aren't far apart—places where we see one another honestly and truly. Wikipedia)

The release is his first true solo studio album since 2004's Grown Backwards and serves as a musical component of a larger multimedia project titled Reasons to Be Cheerful, which attempts to spread positivity. Byrne announced the album and posted its lead single, "Everybody's Coming to My House", online on January 8, 2018. The album received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Alternative Music Album.

Marc Bolan, Cosmic Dancer (BBC4 Documentary) [2017] MP4 + Marc Bolan - Dandy in The Underworld [1997] MP4

MUSIC DOCUMENTARY SPECIAL

MARC BOLAN (R.I.P)

Marc Bolan, Cosmic Dancer (BBC4 Documentary) [2017] MP4 + Marc Bolan - Dandy in The Underworld [1997] MP4

Marc Bolan born Mark Feld; 30 September 1947 – 16 September 1977) was an English guitarist, singer and songwriter. He was a pioneer of the glam rock movement in the early 1970s with his band T. Rex. Bolan was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2020 as a member of T. Rex.

Marc Bolan, the biggest pop star in post-Beatles Britain, was haunted by the fear that he would die before his 30th birthday. He repeatedly told friends, family and colleagues that he had foreseen his own death in a car crash and that the car would be a mini. He had alluded to the tragedy in several songs and a poem in which he named the tree that would become a shrine to his grieving fans. It is said that he had also known the date of his death, gleaned from a painting, titled 'The Sixteenth of September' by the Belgian surrealist Rene Magritte which foreshadowed an iconic image on the cover of his 'The Slider' album. Whatever the truth, it is a fact that on that very date in 1977, two weeks short of his 30th birthday, Bolan's morbid prophecy was fulfilled. In this definitive new biography Paul Roland chronicles the life and music of the vibrato-voiced glam rock idol and 20th century boy who created some of the most instantly appealing and enduring songs of the 70s -- 'Ride A White Swan', ''Hot Love', 'Get It On', 'Telegram Sam', 'Children of the Revolution' and 'Solid Gold Easy Action' -- in what appears to have been a fevered rush to cheat Fate. At the peak of his popularity in 1972 the Beatles acknowledged Bolan and his group T-Rex as their natural successor and Ringo Starr directed the film that brought the fan hysteria known as T-Rextasy to a stagnant British pop scene and which was to top the DVD charts 30 years after its original release. That year the former working class Hackney mod launched his own label and continued a run of number one hits that accounted for 3.5% of the total singles sales in the UK, outselling the combined singles sales of Jimi Hendrix and The Who. But just when Bolan was at the summit of his success it all went sour. This is the incredible story of Marc Bolan's roller-coaster rise to fame and his resurrection as the self-styled 'Godfather of Punk' that promised to put him back on top until the fatal accident which cut short his life and hopes of a comeback.

Marc Bolan - Dandy In The Underworld [1997] MP4

On the 20th anniversary of his tragic death, Ch4 TV (UK) made this documentary. From September 1997

Marc Bolan, Cosmic Dancer (BBC4 Documentary) Parts 1-4 [2017] MP4

Documenting the life story of T.Rex singer, Marc Bolan, in the 40th Anniversary of his death. Featuring appearances accounting his life from Tony Visconti, Andy Ellison, Gloria Jones and June Child.  This intimate biography, narrated in Marc Bolan's own words, traces his remarkable journey from Hackney's 'king of the mods' to Tyrannosaurus Rex, as he evolved into the artist known as 'the hippie with a knife up his sleeve'.  With the dawn of the 1970's and the breakup of The Beatles, Bolan became the gender-bending glam rocker whose band T. Rex revitalised the British music scene. But director Jeremy Marre - incorporating unseen movies shot by record producer Tony Visconti and Marc Bolan himself - reveals a far more complex and driven figure whose life was tragically cut short, aged 29.  Featuring those who were closest to Marc, his friends, colleagues, family, partner Gloria Jones and producer Tony Visconti.

The Glance Of Music [2021].mp4

Ennio Morricone

A documentary on the legendary film composer Ennio Morricone.

Giuseppe Tornatore is recognized in the film industry as one of the best Italian and international directors of the century and what distinguishes his works is the excessive humanity, told without filters and with pure emotions. Ennio is a documentary film by Tornatore, whose protagonist is the beloved and magical maestro Ennio Morricone, one of the greatest composers of all time, but this time this is not a fictional character invented by Tornatore, but simply a character from real life, the humble one, which perfectly marries with Tornatore's tales, so it is a story about a friend, a colleague, a truth-made-human, an endless magic, a dream from which you don't want to wake up. Ennio Morricone, who tells himself in the film, is a transcendental, divine "character" of immense talent and true humanity, full of tears and joy; therefore, his story had to be told obligatorily and then handed down, so this work is nothing more than a letter to posterity, a story about to be told around bonfires that will inspire many future composers and that will pass down Morricone's works from generation to generation. Yet another masterpiece by Tornatore, practically immense, clean, colossal, true and timeless, which does not border on perfection, but reaches it from the beginning and which will never vanish in honor of the great Master Ennio.

Lou Reed - Gold Greatest Hits [2009] (3 x CD's) + Movie Documentary - Lou Reed Remembered [2013]

LOU REED

Lou Reed - Gold Greatest Hits [2009] (3 x CD's)  +  Movie  Documentary - Lou Reed Remembered [2013]

American musician, songwriter, poet, and photographer (March 2, 1942 in Brooklyn, New York - October 27, 2013, Southampton, New York). Reed's music career began in 1958, when he recorded with his high school band, The Jades. During his time at Syracuse University in the early 1960's he formed a series of bands, but was most deeply impacted by his professor, American poet and writer Delmore Schwartz. Following college, he became a stock songwriter/musician for Pickwick International, Inc., and then in 1964, with John Cale, formed The Velvet Underground. In 1970, he left the Velvet Underground during the recording of Loaded. He signed a contract with RCA Records in 1971 and continued to perform until shortly before his death. He was married to Bettye Kronstad (ca. 1973-1974), Sylvia Reed (1980-1994), and Laurie Anderson (2008).

This compilation, though not comprehensive, is an interesting mix of the well-known and the obscure. It opens with what is probably Reed's most delicate love song, the poignant Perfect Day. His biggest hit, Walk On The Wild Side, follows. The aforementioned tracks are from his highly successful Transformer album. I Love You Suzanne is a buoyant ditty from one of his lesser-known 1980's albums, but a memorable love song all the same, whilst Caroline Says II and Berlin come from the bleak Berlin album of the early 1970's. The Last Shot and the humorous I Wanna Be Black are also drawn from more or less obscure albums, although they're all great songs.  Sally Can't Dance and Coney Island Baby are more classics from the 1970s', the first a jerkily rhythmic track and the second a brooding slow song. The album concludes with the melodious Pale Blue Eyes (Live), a most poetic and moving number.  (Amazon)

Movie  Documentary - Lou Reed Remembered [2013] is a film tribute to Lou Reed, who died in October, which looks at the extraordinarily transgressive life and career of one of rock ’n’ roll’s true originals. With the help of friends, fellow musicians, critics and those who have been inspired not only by his music but also by his famously contrary approach to almost everything, the documentary looks at how Reed not only helped to shape a generation but also helped to create a truly alternative, independent rock scene, while also providing New York with its most provocative and potent soundtrack. With contributions from Bob Ezrin, Mick Rock, Lenny Kaye, Paul Auster, Moe Tucker, Boy George, Thurston Moore, Andrew Wylie, Victor Bockris, Holly Woodlawn, Mary Woronov and Steve Hunter.
