VA - Hidden Sunbeams (A Butterboy Compilation) (4 x CDs)

SUNSHINE POP

VA - Hidden Sunbeams (A Butterboy Compilation) (4 x CDs)

Hidden Sunbeams gathers together a very particular kind of light, the soft, harmony‑rich glow of Sunshine Pop in its purest form. Between 1966 and 1969, a small circle of writers, arrangers, and studio groups shaped a genre defined not by chart positions, but by tone, bright melodies, soft‑psych shimmer, baroque touches, and a sense of optimism that seemed to float above the era around it. This collection follows that definition strictly. No beat or mod detours, no garage grit, no bubblegum, no MOR or AM‑pop drift. Just the unmistakable architecture of true Sunshine Pop, built on stacked vocals, pastel arrangements, and a melodic lift that feels weightless.

The strictness matters. Sunshine Pop was never a broad category, it was a narrow, carefully‑drawn studio sound, often created by musicians who moved between projects under different names, leaving behind 45s and album tracks that slipped into obscurity almost as soon as they appeared. Many of the recordings here were pressed in small quantities, distributed regionally, or buried on albums that never reached the audience they deserved. Their rarity isn’t a marketing angle, it’s the natural result of a genre that thrived in the margins, where ambition outpaced commercial reach.

Across four discs, Hidden Sunbeams traces the full spectrum of that sound, the bright, iconic signatures of The Association and The 5th Dimension; the soft‑psych sophistication of Sagittarius, The Millennium, and Free Design; the UK pastel‑baroque of Honeybus, Orange Bicycle, and West Coast Consortium, and the deep‑cut rarities that collectors have chased for decades, Colors of Love, Ellie Janov, Jango’s Carrousel, Fat Man’s Music Festival, and Collage at their most luminous.

These songs were built for clarity, colour, and craft, and for a moment, they made the world feel lighter. Hidden Sunbeams brings that moment back into view. Don't we just need it. (B)

VA - Happy Lovin' Time, Sunshine Pop from the Garpax Vaults [2015]

SUNSHINE POP

VA - Happy Lovin' Time, Sunshine Pop from the Garpax Vaults [2015]

One of the great eccentric pop producers of the '60s, Gary S. Paxton first scored with the early-'60s novelty singles "Alley Oop" and "Monster Mash," and a decade later he decamped for Nashville, where he got straight and found religion. In between those two extremes, he scored smash hits with the Association and Tommy Roe, and those singles are the touchstones for Happy Lovin' Time: Sunshine Pop from the Garpax Vaults, a spectacular collection of 24 Paxton-produced rarities from the late '70s. Most of these recordings -- a good chunk of which are unreleased; 13 of the 24, to be exact -- were made in 1966 and 1967, which is when Paxton headquartered his Garpax Studios in Hollywood, instructing the Four Freshmen on how to sing harmonies as he foraged a fruitful partnership with Curt Boettcher. "Nowhere to Go," that Four Freshmen 45, is here, as are the unreleased Boettcher numbers "Stay" and "Christina, In My Dreams," along with other collaborations with Curt. Boettcher was a good match for Paxton, ratcheting up his majestic instincts, but what's striking about Happy Lovin' Time is the extent of the producer's quirks, how he'd throw everything into the mix, balancing freaked-out fuzz guitars with blaring horns, undercutting a soul groove with harpsichords, and sliding harmonies into a bath of liquid echoes. All this studio flair is very trippy and very Southern Californian; the sides Paxton recorded in Bakersfield prior to leaving for Nashville aren't of a piece with this lush studio craft, there's not a bit of prescient country-rock. That ingenious use of the studio -- colorful and willful without being self-consciously strange -- is what makes Happy Lovin' Time such a delight. Sure, some of the songs are tightly written or boast hooks that carve their way into the cranium, but it's those sounds, softly swirling yet slyly insistent, that make this collection such a blast and such a valuable document of the swinging '60s L.A. underbelly. PSYCHEDELIC POP

VA - Soft Sounds For Gentle People [2003--2014] (9 x CDs)

The “Soft Sounds For Gentle People” series, released by Pet Records between 2003 and 2014, is a wonderful anthology of music that beautifully captures the essence of a past era. This collection of compilation CDs provides listeners with an exclusive sonic voyage through the late 1960s and early 1970s. Included are:

  • VA - Soft Sounds For Gentle People, Vol. 1 [2003]
  • VA - Soft Sounds For Gentle People, Vol. 2 [2003]
  • VA - Soft Sounds For Gentle People, Vol. 3 [2004]
  • VA - Soft Sounds For Gentle People Mystic Males [2005]
  • VA - Soft Sounds For Gentle People, Vol. 4 [2006]
  • VA - Soft Sounds For Gentle People Presents... He & She [2007]
  • VA - Soft Sounds For Gentle People, Sounds of She [2008]
  • VA - Soft Sounds For Gentle People, Vol. 5 [2010]
  • VA - Soft Sounds For Gentle People Mystic Males Volume 2 [2014]

This series pays homage to the varied and lively music scene of that period, particularly in California. It features a range of genres, such as Psychedelic Pop/Rock, Sunshine Pop, and Folk Pop/Rock, weaving a rich sonic tapestry that is both calming and stimulating.

A notable track in the series is by Brigadune, a solo endeavor of Shaun Harris, who was also part of The West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band. This track underscores the series’ dedication to not only showcasing popular hits of the time but also unearthing lesser-known masterpieces that provide a refreshing take on the music of that era.  An unexpected addition to the series is a top 40 hit by Chuck “Scrabble” Woolery, who is primarily known as a game show host. Woolery’s musical input to the series highlights its diverse nature and is a testament to the curators’ commitment to painting a holistic picture of the era’s music, irrespective of the artist’s main profession.

The “Soft Sounds For Gentle People” series was made available at a time when there was a renewed interest in the music of the 1960s and 1970s. The series gave listeners an opportunity to relive the sounds of the past, and for the younger audience, it opened a gateway to discover music they might not have come across otherwise.

The “Soft Sounds For Gentle People” series is a meticulously curated musical expedition that takes listeners back to a crucial period in music history. It underscores the era’s diversity and creativity, from well-known hits to undiscovered gems. Whether you’re a fan of the music from this period just looking to broaden your musical landscape, this series provides a unique and enriching auditory experience. (B)

VA - Good Day Sunshine, Rays of Sunshine Pop (A Butterboy Compilation) CD1+CD2+CD3

Sunshine Pop is a retrospective term for a more cheerful or wistful style of Pop which emerged in the mid 1960s as "soft pop". Influenced by Easy Listening, Jingles, and Psychedelia, the genre largely consisted of lesser-known artists who imitated more popular groups like The Association, The Mamas & The Papas, and The 5th Dimension. The music usually contains light production, catchy melodies, and prominent vocal harmonies. Common instruments are acoustic guitars and/or piano accompanied by Western Classical Music instruments like harpsichord, glockenspiel, and flute.

The style should not be conflated with "sunshine/happy music" or "Beach Boys-esque music" - though influential, the Beach Boys almost never worked in the genre. Sunshine pop is typically inflected with jazzy chords and soft Bossa nova rhythms, and despite its name, may inspire melancholy and a sense of longing for the past. Fruits, colors, and/or cosmic concepts were also recurrent subject matter. Sometimes, the music may resemble Psychedelic Pop with less surreal atmospherics, Bubblegum with more sophistication, or a merge of Folk Pop and Psychedelic Folk. Some song examples are "Windy", "Monday, Monday", and "Up, Up and Away", those of which served as a template for artists like The Free Design, The Peppermint Rainbow, The Sugar Shoppe, Harmony Grass, and The Yellow Balloon.

Los Angeles-based songwriters/producers like Roger Nichols, Jimmy Webb, and Paul Williams had a major hand in shaping many sunshine pop acts. Building on the "California Sound" formulated by the Beach Boys' Brian Wilson and the Mamas and the Papas' John Phillips, Curt Boettcher became one of the most pivotal figures of sunshine pop, producing quintessential psyche pop crossover albums like Eternity's Children, Begin, and Present Tense. In the 1980s and 1990s, sunshine pop found a resurgence in Japan, strongly influencing many prime Shibuya-kei players. This revitalized interest in sunshine pop eventually reached Europe and the United States, and the genre was revived among indie musicians.  (RYM)

I could easily fill many more CD's but here are 75 examples of Sunshine Pop that I hope you will enjoy.
