SITAR ROCK

VA - Sitar Rock (A Butterboy Compilation) CD1+CD2+CD3

While the sitar had earlier been used in jazz and Indian film music, it was from the 1960s onwards that various pop artists in the Western world began to experiment with incorporating the sitar, a classical Indian stringed instrument, within their compositions.

Before the sitar was first used on a Western pop recording, the instrument's drone had been imitated on electric guitar by the Kinks on their 1960s single "See My Friends". Another English band, the Yardbirds, hired a sitar player to play the main riff on their song "Heart Full of Soul", but the group subsequently re-recorded the track without a sitar part. The first pop release to feature sitar was instead "Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)", issued on the Beatles' Rubber Soul album in December 1965. With this sitar part, George Harrison became the first Western musician to play an Indian instrument on a commercial recording.  Harrison is recognised as having introduced the sitar to pop music due to the Beatles' popularity and cultural influence. He first picked up a sitar on the set of the Beatles' 1965 film Help!, and then purchased one of his own following a discussion about Indian classical music with David Crosby and Roger McGuinn of the Byrds in August 1965. Harrison went on to write and record "Love You To" for the Beatles' 1966 album Revolver as an Indian-style track featuring sitar, tambura and tabla. The following year, he wrote "Within You Without You" in the full Indian classical style and recorded it with musicians from the Asian Music Circle for inclusion on the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. Harrison Played Indian instrumentation on the Beatles' recordings over 1966–68, Harrison played sitar and tambura on "Tomorrow Never Knows" and "Across the Universe".

In early 1966, Rolling Stones guitarist Brian Jones played sitar on "Paint It Black", having received tuition from another protégé of Shankar, Harihar Rao, and after consulting Harrison about the part. Jones also used sitar on some tracks on the Rolling Stones' 1967 album Their Satanic Majesties Request. He again played the instrument on "My Little One" in an October 1967 recording session with Jimi Hendrix, as well as tambura on the Stones' 1968 single "Street Fighting Man". Even Elvis Presley had songs with Sitat featuring. (Wikipedia)

From 1966 on-wards, hundreds of songs by rock artists featured sitar. So, this compilation had a lot of tracks to choose from. However, this compilation still had its fair share of challenges. There are many artists that included the Sitar in their tunes, but frankly, it is often difficult to hear the Sitar in the mix of some of the more famous tracks, so therefore these have been left from this list. Of course, there are also artists that have tried to replicate the "Sitar Sound" using guitar and keyboards and whilst, at times sounding convincing have not been included in this list. Some artists went all out and played traditional style sitar and/or used the sitar to created sitar sound cover tunes. These are included here. I hope you like these choices. Enjoy.

PSYCHEDELIC SITAR

VA - Electric Psychedelic Sitar Headswirlers Vol. 01 - 11 [1968 -2014]

Turn off your mind, relax, and float downstream with this 11x CD,s box set gathering all 11 volumes in the classic Electric Psychedelic Sitar Headswirlers series. It's packed with Eastern-tinged rock, pop, and folk from the hippie heyday of the late '60s and early '70s, as well as the more recent psychedelic revival. Featuring over 200 tracks from acts from both sides of the Atlantic, as well as India, Germany, Sweden, Holland, Australia, and elsewhere, it comes complete with an 84-page full-color booklet offering background info, detailed biographies, full discographies, and rare photos, making it a truly essential trip back to psychedelia's incense-shrouded golden age.

Excellent overview of sitar-infused music from the late 60'searly 70s (plus a few well-chosen outliers from later time periods). The foremost genre presented is, of course, psych rock, but there is also a fascinating sampling of pop, folk, prog, jazz and oddball kitsch, all featuring that evocative instrument from the east, the sitar. There are definitely a few new songs to be found, but that's par for the course with a collection this immense, 204 tracks!  (Amazon)

So this compilation had a lot of tracks to choose from. However this compilation still had its fair share of challenges. There are many artists that included the Sitar in their tunes, but frankly, it is often difficult to hear the Sitar in the mix of some of the more famous tracks, so therefore these have been left from this list. Of course there are also artists that have tried to replicate the "Sitar Sound" using guitar and keyboards and whilst, at times sounding convincing have not been included in this list. Some artists went all out and played traditional style sitar and/or used the sitar to created sitar sound cover tunes. These are included here. I hope you like these choices. Enjoy.
