VA - Midnight Radio Noir Jazz Vol. 1+2 [2016-2019] (2 x CDs)

NOIR JAZZ

VA - Midnight Radio Noir Jazz Vol. 1+2 [2016-2019] (2 x CDs)

Midnight Radio Noir Jazz Volumes 1 and 2 work best when heard together, not as sequels but as adjacent rooms in the same late-night space. Taken as a whole, the series feels less like a compilation project and more like a sustained mood, one shaped by restraint, shadow, and a shared understanding of how jazz can function when atmosphere leads and virtuosity steps back.

Across both volumes, sequencing is the quiet anchor. Tracks are arranged to move with a deliberate, unhurried pace, favoring continuity over contrast. Sparse piano figures, muted horns, brushed drums, and low-glow electronics recur throughout, creating a sense of cohesion even as artists and recording contexts change. Nothing announces itself loudly. Instead, pieces drift in, settle, and fade, allowing the listener to stay inside the sound rather than be pulled forward by narrative or climax.

Volume 1 establishes the framework, introducing the noir sensibility through smoky ballads, understated grooves, and jazz-adjacent textures that hint at cinematic spaces without leaning on pastiche. Volume 2 deepens that approach, leaning further into isolation and texture, with more emphasis on space, subtle electronics, and patience. Together, they form a long, uninterrupted listening experience where shifts are felt rather than signposted.

Production quality varies across both sets, moving between lo-fi intimacy and polished studio recordings. Rather than disrupting the flow, these differences add grain and depth, reinforcing the idea of a late-night broadcast assembled from many sources and places. The variability feels intentional, or at least sympathetic to the concept.

As a combined statement, Midnight Radio Noir Jazz avoids defining jazz by era, technique, or pedigree. Instead, it treats jazz as a language capable of whispering, hovering, and lingering in half-light. Heard front to back, Volumes 1 and 2 offer a sustained environment rather than a collection, one that rewards quiet attention and repeated return, revealing its coherence through duration rather than declaration. CRIME JAZZ

VA - Crime Scene USA, Classic Film Noir Themes & Jazz Tracks [2006] (2 x CDs)

In the beginning, they weren't called 'Film Noir'. That term didn't originate until 1946 when a Frenchman coined the phrase as a convenient catchall reference for American low budget hard-boiled crime and detective B-movies shot during the austere '40s and early '50s. It was the look of Film Noir movies as much as their down beat storylines, which made for compulsive viewing. Shot in black and white, these films were dark and claustrophobic and relied upon deep shadows, shards of light and surreal angle shots to establish the appropriate mood. Other much used devices included conspiratorial voiceover narrators and dream-like flashbacks.

Long before Quentin Tarantino's signature film, Hollywood had produced hard-boiled, pulp fiction movies based on the novels & stories of Dashiell Hammett, James M. Cain, Raymond Chandler, and Mickey Spillane. The darker, more adult themes, and cinematic images influenced by German Expressionism of the aptly named "film noir", demanded a new, dramatic music to enhance the singular character of these movies. From the lush scores of "Golden Age" composers like Max Steiner and Franz Waxman, to the young, innovative composers, like Miklos Rozsa and Elmer Bernstein, this recording has tantalizing samples from thirty-one "film noir" classics, selected by an informed editorial staff. Many of the tracks are the "suites", which were originally played over the films' opening credits, and have been extracted directly from the films. The sound quality of the excerpts is surprisingly good, considering the sources.

If you are at all interested in "film noir", use this recording's playlist as a starting point for some of the best films with the best scores from this genre. (Amazon)

CRIME JAZZ

VA - Crime Jazz (A Butterboy Compilation) CD1+CD2+CD3

Crime jazz is a genre of music that emerged in the mid-1950s to accompany film noir movies and hard-boiled detective/crime-themed TV shows. Crime jazz is a style of music that is characterized by gritty, moody, and suspenseful melodies that create a sense of tension and danger. It combines elements of jazz, blues, and orchestral music to create a tense and dramatic atmosphere. It often features instruments such as saxophone, trumpet, piano, guitar, bass, and drums, as well as strings, horns, and percussion. Some of the characteristics of crime jazz are fast tempo, syncopated rhythms, dissonant chords, and chromatic melodies.  Crime jazz music is also known as detective music or noir jazz. (Wikipedia)

The best of this music is atmospheric. You can almost smell the perfume of a woman as she brushes close to you, the stale smell of a cigarette smoldering in an ashtray, the clink of ice cubes in a glass sitting on a wet bar top, the sights, sounds, smells--the feel of late night big city streets--the distant howl of a police siren, the click of a woman's high heels as she walks away, or the click of a gun being cocked. And, just maybe, that unmistakable sound of a switchblade knife opening. But there's also the more sophisticated sound of a champagne cork popping, the swish of a swizzle stick in a dry Martini, a woman's laughter, or the smooth, low roar of a low-slung import car's motor as it drives off with that babe you were checking out in the lounge earlier. But everyone will form their own scenes in their mind's-eye listening to this great music.

Here are 75 crime jazz music tracks that will keep you in suspense. Enjoy!

VA - Jazz Noire, Darktown Sleaze From The Mean Streets Of 1940s L.A. [2011]+ Jazz Noire, Drink Up, Light Up! Tales Of Dope, Booze & Sleaze [2012] (4 x CDs)

Fantastic Voyage has created a comprehensive, well-selected and obviously well-informed collection of late 40s jazz and R&B (in the old sense) of the type you might expect to hear in nightclub scenes in films noir. Appropriately enough, both discs are bookended by the theme music from classics of the genre. Some of the selections are very familiar - Monk's original recording of Round Midnight - while others are drawn from deeper wells, like Leo Parker's exquisite Solitude. The key point is - they're all excellent representations of their genres. After that, it's down to personal tastes. I prefer Billie Holiday in more sprightly mode, but lots of people love the tracks here which I find a bit too self-pitying, and the difference of opinion don't signify when it comes to assessing this excellent compilation.

Fantastic Voyage follows 2011 s hugely-successful Jazz Noire collection by letting the same team return to those sleazy dives and bars, this time homing in on the dope, drink and dubious characters to provide a vivid picture of high-seeking low life between the 1930s and 1950s. The music on Drink Up Light Up! evokes that time when orchestras swelled, brass sections exploded like fireworks and blues dripped off piano keys onto booze- and tear-stained barroom floors, staggering cast including names like the Reefer Man and Snuff Dippin Mama, but the themes are just as relevant to today s recession-hit climate: the desire to escape by getting high (and the often unfavorable repercussions on relationships).  The music on Drink Up - Light Up! Evokes that time when orchestras swelled, brass sections exploded like fireworks and blues dripped off piano keys onto booze- and tear-stained barroom floors, staggering cast including names like the Reefer Man and Snuff Dippin' Mama, but the themes are just as relevant to today's recession-hit climate: The desire to escape by getting high (and the often unfavorable repercussions on relationships). Whether it's Sam Price commanding 'Lead Me Daddy, Straight to the Bar', Buddy Banks confessing 'I Need It Bad (Groove Juice)' or the Four Clefs' getting philosophical on 'When I'm Low I Get High', the selection straddles the whole spectrum of substance-fueled whoopee, the up- and downsides. Springing out of Prohibition and the Depression, the set also provides a fascinating glimpse of street life during that period, up to the Korean War, from domestic scenarios to dope slang, quite apart from the providing a sublimely evocative listening experience.  (Amazon)

What a superb set of jazz music this is. There are also a few tracks I've not heard in a long, long while and it is good to have one's memory nicely jogged. If you like jazz, if you like film music, then this is the album for you.  A fantastic compilation of 1940's gems, beautifully crafted, perfect for late night listening. Special mention must also be made to the packaging and booklet that includes some great period artwork and graphics.
