Eddie Cochran - Somethin' Else [2009] (8 x CDs) A Tribute - IN MEMORY OF EDDIE COCHRAN

A Tribute - IN MEMORY OF EDDIE COCHRAN
Eddie Cochran (Born October 3, 1938 - Died April 17, 1960) left us far too young, but the shockwaves of what he achieved in just 21 years still echo through every corner of rock ’n’ roll. Born in Minnesota and gone by April 17, 1960, he compressed a lifetime of invention into a handful of years, and somehow changed the shape of modern music in the process.

Summertime Blues, C’mon Everybody, Somethin’ Else, these weren’t just hits, they were foundations. Eddie sharpened the sound of youth rebellion, gave it muscle, melody, and a studio intelligence that was years ahead of its time. His guitar tone, his phrasing, his sense of space and swagger… you can hear all of it in British beat, in garage rock, in punk, and in every kid who ever plugged in an amp hoping to sound bigger than the room.

What he left behind is more than a catalogue. It’s a spark, the reminder that music can leap forward when someone refuses to play it safe. On this anniversary, it feels right to thank him for that gift, the energy, the attitude, the craft, and the sense that rock ’n’ roll could be both fierce and fun at the same time.

Eddie Cochran didn’t get the long career he deserved, but he changed the direction of popular music all the same. That’s the mark of a true original. (B)

Eddie Cochran - Somethin' Else [2009] (8 x CDs)

All vocal recordings by Eddie Cochran, whether as a solo artist or member of the Cochran Brothers, including his timeless hits, Twenty Flight Rock, and Somethin' Else! Some out-takes are also included! A killer selection from Eddie's instrumental and experimental recordings! Demos, live recordings, and interviews! A selection of Eddie Cochran's work as a session guitarist.  It's astonishing to think that when Ray Edward Cochran was taken from us in a freak car accident while on tour in England in April 1960 - he was only 6 months into his 22nd year and had already clocked up over 200 recordings - the bulk of which are presented in this eagerly awaited and sumptuous box set... For US fans there's the first 3 singles on Ekko as The Cochran Brothers, the lone 7" on Crest, the 14 that followed on Liberty (A&B for each) and the 3 Liberty albums proper from 1957, 1960 and 1962. For UK fans there's the 13 London singles followed by the 10 Liberty ones and the 4 important albums - "Singin' To My Baby" (1958), "The Eddie Cochran Memorial Album" (1960), "Cherished Memories" (1962) and "My Way" (1964). I've checked and they're ALL on here.(Amazon)

Eddie Cochran didn't record all that long, but his legacy is formidable. A mere 21 years old when he died in a car accident in 1960, Cochran recorded one of the iconic songs of the 20th century with "Summertime Blues," a song that captured the rock & roll attitude better than almost any one single, but he wasn't just image: he had a set of songs that were funny, vibrant, and alive, at their best holding their own with Chuck Berry's teenage vignettes, brought to life by his inventive recordings where he pioneered the overdubbing of guitars and use of studio space, opening up the sound of records, suggesting sounds and possibilities in a way rivaled only by Buddy Holly. Like his friend Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran wound up defining the very essence of rockabilly for countless listeners, his sound and stance echoing throughout the decades, from the Beatles to the Stray Cats and beyond. And he did this all with a body of songs that number no greater than 50.

With such a small canon of work, the question of whether he can sustain such a mammoth complete recordings box set as Bear Family's 2009 set Somethin' Else: The Ultimate Collection does arise. The answer winds up being a surprising, resounding yes, for like all the best Bear Family boxes, Somethin' Else thrives by presenting a context for Eddie's work. Certainly, context is what Bear Family offers here -- along with excellent remastered sound and superb liner notes -- to the legions of Cochran diehards, because all of his recorded work, including live sets, has been previously excavated. Any diehard will be familiar with every note here, which may be a detriment for those willing to spend over 200 dollars on a box set, but again, it's the context that makes Somethin' Else feel like something special. It traces Eddie's career through his early country beginning as part of the Cochran Brothers, through his earliest Elvis impressions, then through the explosion of hits in the late '50s. As the studio recordings run out, the set charges through the live radio and TV recordings (some punctuated by on-air interviews), and all of a sudden the familiar songs are given a freshness through these live performances, as Cochran's steady-growing confidence and charisma soon turn overpowering. Then, the set adds an appendix of sideman sessions from Eddie, split equally between rockabilly and country, all proof of his range and possibility. Ultimately, that's the power of this exceptional set: it suggests how much Eddie Cochran could have done without ever diminishing what he did achieve. (AllMusic Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine)

VA - Dusty Fingers Volume 01 to Volume 66 [1997 - 2022] (66 x CDs)

Dusty Fingers is the name of a series of compilation records of songs that are widely admired as breakbeats collected by Bronx DJ Danny Dann the Beat Mann. Some of the songs featured contain "open breaks" which are solo drum passages which enable DJs to easily transition into them. These are also attractive to producers, who loop or rearrange them to create new compositions. Following in the tradition of the Ultimate Breaks and Beats series, the Dusty Fingers records contain an eclectic range of musical styles: mainly funk and jazz, but also including soul, rock, disco, and pop. Many of the songs in the Dusty Fingers series have been sampled into new musical compositions, mainly by hip hop producers... (Wikipedia)

There were 66 volumes of Dusty Fingers, released from 1997 to 2022.

TONY RIVERS, R.I.P. Tony Rivers - Move in a Little Closer - The Complete Recordings 1963-1970 [2023] (3 x CDs)

TRIBUTE

TONY RIVERS, R.I.P.

Tony Rivers - Move in a Little Closer - The Complete Recordings 1963-1970 [2023] (3 x CDs)

Tony Rivers, born Douglas Anthony Thompson on 21 December 1940 in Shildon, County Durham, spent his life chasing harmony. Not just the musical kind, but the deeper, human one, the quiet balance between craft, humility, and generosity. His passing on 31 March 2026 closes the book on one of British pop’s most quietly influential figures, a singer whose voice shaped more of the musical landscape than most listeners ever realised.

From the moment he stepped forward with Tony Rivers & the Castaways, he revealed a rare gift, the ability to make sunshine audible. His instinct for West Coast–style harmony was uncanny, almost architectural. He didn’t just sing parts, he built them, layered them, breathed life into them. With Harmony Grass, he refined that gift further, creating music that felt effortless even though it was anything but.

Yet Tony’s greatest legacy may lie in the decades of work that followed, often uncredited but always essential. His arrangements, his session vocals, his behind‑the‑scenes guidance, these became the invisible scaffolding of countless British pop records. Once you learn to recognise his touch, you hear it everywhere, the lift in a chorus, the warmth in a blend, the subtle intelligence that makes a song feel complete.

What set Tony apart wasn’t fame or flash, but character. He was a collaborator’s collaborator, steady, kind, ego‑free. Musicians trusted him. Fans adored him. Archivists and collectors knew that if Tony Rivers was involved, the music would have heart.

He leaves behind a legacy built on beauty, discipline, and a lifelong devotion to the art of harmony. Tony Rivers didn’t chase stardom, he chased excellence. And he found it, again and again, leaving a glow in the music that will outlast us all.

A good man, a great musician, and a voice that will keep ringing long after the world has gone quiet. (B)

Move in a Little Closer, The Complete Recordings 1963-1970 captures Tony Rivers’ most defining era with a completeness that finally does justice to his craft. Across these seven years, from the earliest Castaways singles to the polished glow of Harmony Grass, you hear Douglas Anthony Thompson steadily shaping a distinctly British reading of Californian harmony pop, long before the style had a name.

The set’s strength lies in its scope. Every A‑side, B‑side, studio fragment, and period rarity is restored and sequenced chronologically, allowing the listener to follow Tony’s evolution in real time. The early Castaways tracks show a band discovering its harmonic identity; by the mid‑60s, the arrangements tighten and Tony’s instinct for layered vocals becomes unmistakable. With Harmony Grass, the sound reaches full bloom, bright, airy, and deceptively intricate.

For collectors, this anthology resolves decades of scattered sources. Material once spread across obscure comps, vinyl transfers, and half‑remembered broadcasts is finally unified, cleaned, and contextualised. The through‑line becomes clear: a meticulous craftsman refining his palette until the music radiates with effortless warmth.

This 2023 collection stands as the definitive document of Tony Rivers’ formative years, a testament to discipline, beauty, and the quiet brilliance behind his enduring sound. (B)
