VA - Copycats Volume 3, Rewritten Songs (A Butterboy Compilation) (15 x CDs)
"VA - Copycat - Rewritten Songs" are tracks that have reused melodies, lyrics, or chord structures, whether intentionally or not. While some remakes credit the original composer, most do not. These songs vary from obvious reproductions to those with similar riffs or just inspired by the original.
Pablo Picasso said, "Good artists copy, great artists steal." Creativity spawns' creativity, as they say.
The line between influence and imitation in music can be fuzzy. Many great artists have borrowed elements from others, creating their own masterpieces. These similarities can be coincidental, subliminal, or intentional, and sometimes lead to legal disputes.
Imitation can be seen as flattery or influence. Artists often tour together or share history, leading to familiar sounding music. It can be challenging to determine if a song has been copied, but some artists like The Beatles, Tom Petty, and Simon and Garfunkel view remakes as a sign of respect, maybe because they too have borrowed from the past.

So, returning by popular demand, here’s Volume 3 of the “Copycat” series. Like its predecessors, it features songs bearing striking resemblances to others. Some share a riff or chorus, others the song structure, and some are slower or faster than the original, while others pay homage. They are indeed “Copycats”.
After extensive research and song collection, I present 317 tracks (with over 16 hrs. of music) that may leave you puzzled or awake at night, while others will be instantly recognizable. Regardless, these tracks should give you a sense of how music evolved from one artist to another.
I’ve tried to avoid repeating tracks from the first two volumes, but please forgive any inadvertent repeats. As before, some tracks have 3 versions of the same song to highlight the change from one artist to another. Some referenced songs lack available recordings from their release time, so I’ve used a later track to represent the song’s structure (e.g., some classical pieces). Whilst the first two volumes focused mainly on rock versions, this volume includes many genres.
Each song is presented in release/inception date order, with the original first, followed by the ‘Copycat’ version(s).
I feel this is the best approach to review the music historically.
