CALYPSO

VA - Sounds Of The Caribbean Islands - Calypso, The Authentic Sound From Trinidad & Tobago, A History 1912 - 1962 [2016] (10 x CDs)

When people hear of Calypso today, they just as likely think of the sea nymph in Greek mythology, as of the musical fad of the late 50s to which she lent her name. With his rise to superstardom, especially Harry Belafonte garnered the genre increased attention. In the music assembled in this collection one can easily hear that Belafonte "borrowed" from many of the early performers and that some of his most successful titles had been popular a few years prior to his versions already.

In the early days Calypso was a medium of communication, spreading messages of all kinds - the daily newspaper of the little man in song. Many residents of the "Islands in the Sun" took the contents of these songs, which often dealt with politics and topics of daily life-love, the adversities of fate, sex, lies, and alcohol-, as reliable message. The songs created space for free expression. Over time the music was mostly consumed as pure entertainment, especially in the late 1950s. This 10-CD BOX documents this "Folk music of the Caribbean", which eventually gave rise to Ska and Reggae, from its origins via the highlights of the genre up to the decay of the Calypso boom. (The Intense Media, back cover)

This 202 track box set is a collection of 10 CDs that features various artists and songs from the Calypso genre, which originated in Trinidad and Tobago. Calypso is a style of music that combines West African Kaiso, French Creole, and Caribbean influences, and often features witty and humorous lyrics that comment on social and political issues. The box set covers the history of calypso from 1912 to 1962, and includes some of the most famous and influential calypso singers, such as Lord Kitchener, Mighty Sparrow, Lord Melody, and Harry Belafonte. The box set also contains some rare and obscure recordings, as well as some examples of how calypso influenced other genres, such as rock & roll, folk, and ska. The box set is divided into thematic discs, each with 20 tracks (except CD09 which has 22 with two very rare track included), and has a total running time of about 10 hours. The box set was released in 2016 by The Intense Media, a label that specializes in historical and archival music compilations.  (Amazon)

BLACK MUSIC IN BRITAIN

VA - Gotta Get A Good Thing Goin', The Music Of Black Britain In The Sixties [2022] (4 x CDs)

Gotta Get a Good Thing Goin’ is the first box set to document the huge influence of Black music in Britain in the 1960s. With 115 tracks, the deluxe long form box set includes sleeve notes including an essay from Fitzroy Facey (Soul Survivors) A four-CD compilation that pays tribute to a lost era. While many of the decade's most successful UK bands (The Beatles, The Rolling Stones et al) were originally inspired and influenced by Black American soul and R&B, it could be argued that Black artists recording in Britain at the time weren't given the exposure they deserved.

The first two discs of Gotta Get a Good Thing Goin’ document the explosion of homegrown Soul and Rhythm and Blues which reflected the growing success of labels such as Motown and Stax/Atlantic, which spearheaded the plethora of Black music emanating from the States. However, Soul and R&B aren't the only genres catered for here. While Disc 3 is devoted to the homespun Ska, Rocksteady and Reggae from artists who'd often been born in the Caribbean, Disc 4 reflects a wider range of styles including choice selections from many stars of their day. Gotta Get a Good Thing Goin’ boasts numerous tracks new to CD and includes many 45s which now command three figure sums on the collector's market. With comprehensive sleeve notes and artist biographies, a plethora of rare images and photos and newly remastered sound, this is a fitting homage to a golden era in Black British music.

This is the OFFICIAL CD RIP from my own personal collection, and not the previous very poor-quality fan made compilation compiled from various CD sources, crackly vinyl and YouTube rips which has been doing the rounds on various blogs and music sites and is completely exclusive to BB's blog.

Enjoy!

CALYPSO MAGIC

VA - London Is the Place for Me 1-8 [2002-2019] (8 x CD's)

''Long before there was reggae, or even ska, the official soundtrack of black Britain was calypso. Not just records coming from "back home" into newly-arrived immigrant communities, but a genuine London/Port Of Spain hybrid with some of the Caribbean's greatest entertainers composing songs about Lyon's Corner Houses, riding on the Underground, nosy landladies and--of course--the British weather. Calypso provided a vibrant, exciting, often hilarious commentary on 1950s London life. This music couldn't have happened anywhere else, and yet it is customarily forgotten. Until now, that is. Honest Jon's has unearthed recordings by the likes of Lord Kitchener, Lord Beginner and The Lion and put them together as London Is The Place For Me. A timely reminder, in such proximity to the 40th anniversary of Jamaican independence, that 50 years ago the voice of Britain's West Indian communities had a distinctly Trinidadian lilt. Spin a few of these tunes and you'll find out as much about life in those days as you could from any textbook--and you can dance to them.''

So these releases are is a timely reminder that (as Bob Dylan also demonstrated subsequently) there is more to life than romance and sex and can be much more to lyrics than the "love" and lust that preoccupies most commercial music. (Graham Colombé)

Harry Belafonte - Belafonte, Sings Calypso, Blues and Folk Songs [2012] (10 x CD's)

HARRY BELAFONTE (R.I.P.)

Harry Belafonte - Belafonte, Sings Calypso, Blues and Folk Songs [2012] (10 x CD's)

Harry Belafonte (born Harold George Bellanfanti Jr.; March 1, 1927 – April 25, 2023) in New York, was an American singer, actor, and activist, who popularized calypso music with international audiences in the 1950s. Belafonte is one of the few performers to have received an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony (EGOT), although he won the Oscar in a non-competitive category. He earned his career breakthrough with the album Calypso (1956), which was the first million-selling LP by a single artist. Belafonte was best known for his recordings of "Day-O (The Banana Boat Song)", "Jump in the Line (Shake, Senora)", "Jamaica Farewell", and "Mary's Boy Child". He recorded and performed in many genres, including blues, folk, gospel, show tunes, and American standards. He also starred in films such as Carmen Jones (1954), Island in the Sun (1957), Odds Against Tomorrow (1959), Buck and the Preacher (1972), and Uptown Saturday Night (1974). He made his final screen appearance in Spike Lee's BlacKkKlansman (2018).

Belafonte considered the actor, singer, and activist Paul Robeson to be a mentor. Belafonte was also a close confidant of Martin Luther King Jr. during the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s. He was a vocal critic of the policies of the George W. Bush and Donald Trump administrations. Belafonte acted as the American Civil Liberties Union celebrity ambassador for juvenile justice issues.

Belafonte won three Grammy Awards (including a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award), an Emmy Award, and a Tony Award. In 1989, he received the Kennedy Center Honors. He was awarded the National Medal of Arts in 1994. In 2014, he received the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award at the Academy's 6th Annual Governors Awards and in 2022 was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in the Early Influence category. (Wikipedia)

Harry Belafonte's " Belafonte, Sings Calypso, Blues and Folk Songs" is a wonderful 10 CD collection from the veteran vocalist.

Harold George Belafonte's parents came from the Caribbean.  Harry's father left the family while Harold was still an infant so the mother left for Jamaica with her small son. After several years Harry returned to New York, just before he turned 18. Belafonte opened a club in Greenwich Village with several of his friends, now performing as a singer in his own club. In 1954 the young entertainer landed a minor role in a film and made a lasting impression on audiences. Just one year later he was given the leading role in the box office hit Carmen Jones. This was to be his breakthrough as an actor. It was to be another year before his first hit, 'Jamaica Farewell' made its way up the charts. His next chart climber was to become the greatest of all his hits: 'Banana Boat Song'. This was the birth of the calypso boom and Belafonte made the charts eight times in 1956 and 1957.  Included in these 10 CD's are13 Original Albums, singles and Bonus tracks. This is a terrific collection of just about all of Belafonte's recordings that you'd ever want to have. (B)
