I've visited a lot of abandoned MAL profiles a lot of times, out of sheer curiosity. I am a nostalgia freak and the internet from the 2000s reminds me a lot of my childhood; the times when people used "XD" unironically, every single pic was 240p with some crappy watermark on top, and everything was generally way different to the modern internet experience. A lot of these old profiles have been abandoned for well over a decade. Personally, I get a very odd melancholia out of these profiles. What happened to these people? What reason did they have to just disappear one day? Did they just forget their password, or perhaps it was something more drastic? These profiles are kind of like a relic of the old days of the internet, and they nowadays lay abandoned, you might come across them at random when you check some old forum post or episode/chapter discussion, and looking at them feels like looking at the past. Does anyone else ever like to visit these old profiles just for the sake of the nostalgia or the curiosity of the early MAL days? Are there any profiles you particularly like? |

I still experience those "Nostalgia" as I use "xd" not ironically through conversations, with my home-town internet 240-360p is the best quality I can view something and I would often visit Polish sites fulfilled with toxicism, racism, mysogonism and many more, for my usage I still have the same experience as I used to in 2000s, it is just no longer a 24/7 experience of internet in nowadays. Even the same Polish youtubers are still creating their stuff, tho some of them has changed as the Pedophilia got quite very heated here. I can't tell how many online buddies I have on my friend list who are absent for over 12 years or more or less, except for those whom I know IRL I have no idea about the others. What happenede, quite easy: Stopped Watching anime Forgot password, after a long time of not using the site [tend to lead into forgeting an e-mail, as I've had such situations too] Got a job and career to build Created a Family Went to war Got a risk job Died And many more reasons which I can't think of right now. I don't visit their profiles or anything as it isn't my interest, no matter if we speak about Mal or Steam or any other site Even ghosts can feel nostalgia in my home-town as I have at least 2 items which are over 200 years olds, aswell as if I would like to spend some money I have a broken mechanical table which would be used for sewing. Despite seeing those things in anime many of people wouldn't even know how such things look like x) Here's how it look like [from internet as I can't provide a photo due to being in Poznań]: |

ISeeLifePeople said: Mostly of them left anime stuff around 25+ quit due to IRL matter like work, married, force majeur incident etc This is the most likely reason. Growing older and doing such things can eat so much of your time. It's very rare for users to post any sort of farewell on their profiles, and as the years go by that kind of thing has become increasingly common. It's a curious experience to read them and try to guess what led them to abandon the place, but for most of them, the answer will forever remain a mystery. We should treasure the good times we have with others while they're here. You never know when they will just never return one day. |

I would imagine it is some combination of falling out of anime or other life commitments taking priority. After a time, most websites become more of a stale experience anyway so there will be natural churn even if a person's life situation remained unchanged. Plus, the other thing to consider is as people get older and their peers leave the forum/website then they have less incentive to stay themselves. |

I get what you mean. It's the same way I look for old Youtube videos from 2007-2010 with like less than 500 views. It's a relic and a very insignificant part of the internet, but it was someone's creation and had some type of thought put into it. Because the internet is starting to become older and older every year, we are starting to see people who've had accounts on websites who are no longer with us but still have their content available. This is something essentially impossible for the common person before the internet. Think about Youtubers who've passed away. One of my favorite Youtubers back in the day died in 2013 and it's crazy that I can still watch their content with a 5 second search. I always wonder that when I go or when I become inactive on a website I used if people will find my account and wonder about me. |

@traed Yeah, not sure what OP is talking about. These are just emojis before actual emojis were a thing, and since MAL doesnt have emoji support, text based ones are the next best thing. Though I sometimes wish some social media sites dont automatically convert text emoticons to emojis when you type them in, maybe I want the simple design. Lets not forget the :3 , a staple to any weeb along with ^_^ |

@Trimethylglycine I can think of one or two YouTubers from like over a decade ago now who might have died or did, in fact, die. It's honestly haunting when you know that someone might just be dead, but a partial record of their life and who they were is stored somewhere you probably stumbled upon by sheer chance. For instance, I was looking through some obscure metal bands a time ago, found one from the '90s which had some high school girl in it who died after being hit by the fucking school bus, and there were some old memorials and obituaries, which had comments left in them. It's just like, that idea that someone might be gone and everything they ever were is now stuck in time, not necessarily lost, but not something you'll find easily either. |

I’m pretty huge on nostalgia and find myself tracing back to those profiles or early days too. I was personally on hiatus for 5+ years I’d say? School, life, relationships, work or putting a pause on anime can definitely cause it. |

I'm sure there are multiple reasons. Some just grew out of anime. Some don't feel the need to track the shows they watched. Some stopped watching anime because life got busy. I stopped playing video games because I was super busy in my last year of school and I just never picked them up again. |

I don't look at profiles that are unused because why bother. It's easy to find them, on ancient threads for old anime that I might comment on (I found a ton when I was watching The Last Exile) But what makes me wonder: is what profiles are active right now, and this post right here- could be their last. @-DxP- At the age of 12-13, I was very skeptical about my friend’s words that we were unlikely to be interested in the same games and cartoons 10 or 15 years later. I'm almost 34 now and I'm pretty much done with most of my hobbies from that time. Even the store and the tree near where our dialogue took place have already disappeared, lol. |

I thought only I have these nostalgic feelings lol. I am 25, here since I was 14 years old and don't plan to go away soon, even though I don't watch a lot of anime nowadays. I think in most of the cases they stopped watching anime, didn't talk with anyone there or didn't have a reason to go there anymore. I personally know like 4 of the people I have on my friends list, 3 of them have abandoned profiles, and believe me, I know they are alife, some of them even watch anime, just don't use this site, they got bored of it in most of the cases. |

I used to do a lot of rip posting. Finding random accounts that haven't been online since like 2007 and posting rip. This person made an account and never came back. https://myanimelist.net/profile/solaris85 Old profiles that actually used the site are the best of course. It's akin to the kick certain people get out of seeing crumbling &/or liminal spaces XD (I had to) I actually find myself wondering more about those lurkers or ghost users who were once fiercely active here. They no longer participate in the forums, reply to comments or accept friend requests & if they update their profiles, it's sporadic. |

I love surfing the web to find abandoned anything really. websites, youtube channels etc. i've lurked here for some years and have came across quite a few abandoned profiles. sometimes i get really interested in them because of the amount of post they have. like i think they seem cool and maybe i could've been friends with them if i was active around the same time they were. |

Yeah, I am with OP on this. A bit of melancholia is the perfect way of putting it. I like browsing through all the old comments on episode discussion threads from back when those shows were originally airing. I like checking out the profiles from those people to see if they are still active, if the anime they used to be so enthusiastic about is still in their favorites. I'll say it now: if my profile ever goes inactive, it's because I died. |
