Synopsis

Ageha Yoshina is a self-confident high school student who helps others for a fee. On his way back from a job, he finds a strange calling card with the word "Psyren" imprinted left behind in a phone booth and decides to keep it, unaware of its purpose. The very next day, Ageha discovers that his classmate Sakurako Amamiya has the exact same calling card in her possession. When he questions her, Sakurako asks him to save her, signaling the day his troubles begin.

Confused by the circumstances of this encounter, Ageha realizes something is wrong when Sakurako goes missing. In an attempt to figure out what is happening, he decides to call the number provided on the calling card and is asked a series of questions by a mysterious voice, ending with a final, cryptic question: "Would you like to go to Psyren?" Thus begins two teenagers' participation in a game of life or death within a strange world inhabited by monsters called Taboo. Granted the ability to use psychic powers known as PSI, the duo fight to return to the place they call home.

Psyren is a manga where you get thrown into a situation out of the normal everyday life and you have to figure out how to get around, a mystery manga basically. However, once most of the mystery has been uncovered, the plotline quickly changes to focus more on the action thriller parts. It was an incredibly enjoyable read with incredible art. Highly recommend going through the 16 volumes that it spans.

However, the harsh truth is: this industry is hard to survive in. Psyren was unfortunately axed. The author had 20ish chapters to wrap up the whole story. Many of what I would consider the main ...

Mixed Feelings
Sometimes I read an obscure manga on the off chance that it may be something interesting, and while Psyren was alright, it's far from a hidden gem. It's more like finding a penny on the ground. Sure, you got something out of it, but not much.

The story starts with an interesting mystery, and while not earth-shattering, the twists and turns are enough to keep you invested. In fact, the plot was interesting enough to keep me going to the end, and was pretty good to the end. It was cool to see how actions in one world effected the other.

The characters are the real problem. ...

I read this with some curiosity because I saw a lot of people praising it as the second Jesus of manga and thought it didn't deserve the axe even though it was 145 chapters.

After I finished reading this, I don't know what most people saw in it, but this series is pretty mediocre, almost substandard, and has an unsatisfying ending. The story and premise were interesting for the first ten chapters or so until the power system was introduced, and the plot leaned more towards the more intense battles, it became a boring read. They seemed deep and complex but were executed so poorly that I ...
