Synopsis

In a high school classroom, students mourn the loss of one of their own: Tomie Kawakami, who has been murdered and dismembered. Shocked by the announcement of her death, the class is puzzled by the cruel fate that has befallen someone so dear to them; such a radiant and beautiful girl did not deserve such a hideous demise. However, a strikingly familiar student suddenly appears at the classroom's entrance. Gorgeous, slender, and with a beauty mark under her left eye, Tomie smiles and apologizes for being late.

But this is just the beginning of the mysteries surrounding this seemingly inhuman woman. The men unlucky enough to catch her eye become smitten with her instantly, but also become driven by a dark impulse to dismember her, one they often succumb to. And each time, Tomie returns from the dead to continue her favorite pastime: toying with men.

Background

Tomie was published in English by ComicsOne on April 4, 2005. VIZ Media republished the series in a single hardcover omnibus on December 20, 2016. The story Painter was also published by VIZ Media as part of Shiver: Junji Ito Selected Stories. The series was also released in Polish by Japonica Polonica Fantastica in two volumes from February 1, 2015, to May 30, 2015; and in Spanish by ECC Ediciones from July 29, 2016, to August 31, 2016.

The manga was adapted into multiple Japanese live-action films and an anthology TV series that aired on December 26, 1999.

I really liked this. I'm not one to be scared that easily, but even some of the panels surprised me a lot, and I liked the ending.
I liked the fact that we literally know nothing about Tomie, except that she gets men to go crazy over her, and make them kill her, she can regenerate, and do a lot of creepy things, but that's it. We don't know her upbringing, origin, or how she works; we don't even know who or how the first Tomie came into existence. It's all a mystery, and I really like that; it makes it more creepy. This was alright. There was a mix of pretty good stories and not so good ones. Some were very creative while others felt empty or samey. I think the concept of tomie could have been fully explored with half as many chapters. The fact that a lot of these chapters were his early works, where his art is quite lacking detracts a bit considering his art style is the main draw of his stories. The worst piece of shit I've ever had the misfortune to read. Repetitive, absurd, stupid... It's the same plot over and over again. I read it all the way to the end because I couldn't believe it. I thought it wasn’t possible to make such an absolutely disjointed story. It's as if he thought it would be cool to have a character that regenerates and without developing the idea one bit he started making 20 random chapters and since there's blood and boobs and there's not even half a joke some crazy person thought it’s an adult story and published it.
