The Railway Children were always a story of what could have been. From the early Smiths comparisons and promises of greatness on Factory Records through to the glossy Rickenbacker jangle-pop of their commercial days with Virgin. Factory were guilty of not promoting them enough in the mid-eighties, mini albums have never been great vehicles for fame and fortune, and though it is very good, Reunion Wilderness should have been a full album and delivered more. Virgin over-polished the band's raw edges and were guilty of playing on Gary Newby's pretty looks rather than his exceptional songwriting ability. In case you need reminding In The Meantime, Every Beat Of The Heart, Something So Good and Music Stop are among the finest guitar pop songs of the late eighties.

Wigan, So Much To Answer For

The Railway Children - Every Beat Of The Heart
Firstly, The Railway Children were not a Manchester band, nor were they a boy band - they were from Wigan. I wonder if Tony Wilson told Virgin Records, who took two years to get a hit in the top twenty. Virgin did get the band important tour supports with REM and Lloyd Cole which helped them find a larger audience, but the charm of the early Factory Record releases and this, their biggest single was lost and The Railway Children were eventually lost in a long dark tunnel of mediocrity.
Lovers of catchy jingle jangle guitar indie-pop will also adore the excellent Everybody and Strange Attractor which were also included on this CD single.

Ripped from a compact disc single released on Virgin Records (VSCDT 1237) in 1990 to high quality lossless 16-bit FLAC.
1. Every Beat Of The Heart
2. Everybody
