Finishes over the weekend

Almost finished this potholder, just need to add the binding for it after I find fabric that will work.

Next up was this quilt top that is approximately 40" by 60" in size.  It was made in response to both a challenge on Sunshine in a quilt that would be sent to Quilts Beyond Borders as a part of what the Sunshine group normally does.   And it also fit the challenge that my friend Susan of DesertSky Quilting had challenged her readers to do for charity for advent.

I used a Long Quarter of a halloween monster print and pulled an orange checked print and a yellow TOT strip to make the rail fence blocks.  A lime green TOT strip for the inner border and solid orange for the final border

Final look has almost a 3D look too it because of the colors and the way they work with each other.
You can read more about the #adventblocksforcharity by clicking on the image to the side.

Next up was the stitching on this embellished sweatshirt for my mom.  This was one scene from a panel of cute kitties.   Still have lots to work with for future projects.  =)
And the final project over the weekend was making this little mug rug.  It finished out at 9.5" square the pattern and a couple of the fabrics (the house and the snow) came as part of the third free kit during the shop hop I participated in back in November.  This will most likely end up being a gift for someone this Christmas.

Gratitudes:
1. Thankful for the friends who have invited me to stay with them during my trip to Phx.

2. Thankful for being able to house-sit for friends in Phx and being able to sew while i'm there.

A Fishy Tale

Another set of UFO blocks hits the dust.....

This quilt top started with a set of 5 blocks that had been made in response to a challenge I made to Sunshine members.  The fabric I had sent out was the fish fabric in the pieced blocks.

I used a second fish print that was close to the first in look and colors and the solid orange used in the borders to finish it off.

Final size is 41" by 56".

Gratitudes:

2. For getting my tax refund back!

Weekend Progress

Made some progress this weekend in spite of all that was going on.

First up where the 7 swan blocks that I completed the stitching on - pinks and purple ones.   I'm working on them in color order based on what tote I need to get the thread out of.

I then was able to get the last 8 prepped swans fused down and ready for stitching.

I then got the borders onto a quilt for sunshine quilts.  The blocks were part of a challenge that had been made with some of my fabric by a gal in Sunshine for me to put together.  And yes, the borders were deliberately made asymmetrical.  =)  The new machine was used to sew the last two borders onto the quilt and I think I've finally figured out the stitch length and tension for the straight stitch....well at least for this quilt.  lol

I had 3 more blocks (well, 4 but one has gone missing) with the fish fabric in them that I set together for the center part of another quilt.  Don't have a picture of it to show here tho.

Gratitudes:
1. Good traffic this morning on the way to work.

2. Feedback on business cards was helpful and they are now on order.

Border Options on Sunshine Quilts

Still thinking about the borders for these blocks.   I have decided that they will end up in two different quilts instead of putting them all together in one quilt.

For borders, at the moment I'm thinking of doing an inner border of a golden yellow around the orange blocks.   Then followed by a final border of either the polka dot or a blue print.

Trying to decide which I like better - the blue seems to draw the blue background out,, while the other seems to highlight the fish.......but trying to make up my mind on which looks better.

Good thing that these don't have a deadline on them with me not being able to make my mind up.   Wish they'd "talk" to me...lol.

Gratitudes:

1. Spring is almost here

2. Making progress with the business stuff

I Tried, But.......

While I was at Quilt Con my friend and I visited three different quilt shops.   One of the lovely fabrics that I found at the last one was this polka dot fabric that I thought would go with the yellow and orange I remembered being in these UFO blocks (made by someone else) meant for Sunshine quilt.   And it does go well with those two colors....just not as well with the fishy print in the blocks...lol.

So now I'm debating whether putting an inner border would be enough to mean that I could use the fabric for a final border or if I need to find something else.    Any ideas?

Weekend Finishes

I'm getting ready to send a box of completed tops for Sunshine Quilts off in the mail this to someone who will quilt them for me.   To do this I've been finishing off tops that were in progress and pulling other tops that were finished and had been stashed in various totes.

First two tops that I finished were the ones with the heart lotto blocks.   These just needed borders.  Found fabric that I liked for the borders in my cabinet downstairs.

The last quilt finished this weekend was one that started with a pillow panel I received from the gal who has been quilting most of my quilt tops for Sunshine the last few years.  I received it a couple of yrs ago and hadn't been able to think of what I wanted to do with it.   This weekend I finally decided to make a couple of extra blocks with an applique Sunbonnet Sue on them to echo the panels.  Then added a 4" cut border and sashing around the blocks and it's done.   It will be going off with this batch of Sunshine quilts.

Gratitudes:
1. Finally managed to get x-rays of my knees done this afternoon.  Now to wait for the results from the doc.

2. Anti-inflammatories will eventually kick in.

Ready for Borders.....

The blocks I started working with earlier this week are now in quilt tops that are ready for borders.

The heart blocks are string pieced, and were from a lotto block swap back in 2006.  The top one will get two borders - a narrow black Kona and then a black w/bright print of some sort.

The bottom one is only 38" by 40" so it needs borders top and bottom before adding one all the way around to bring it up to size.  Although I'm thinking that I may go in and make one more block to make the bottom point on the heart.   Haven't fully decided tho because I don't know if I really want to do that much frog-stitching.

Both of the finished quilt tops will be going to Sunshine quilts.

Polka Dots and Sunshine

Between finishing up the t-shirt quilt, and trying to get everything lined up for the Skills USA State Conference and Contests that I'll be at for 4 days this next week as lead advisor I decided I needed just something simple to work on.

So I pulled out a set of blocks that someone in Sunshine had made using fabric that I had in response to a challenge that I made last year.

The focus print in these features little bears doing all sorts of things.   Main colors are navy and red with just a little bit of green in it.   The fabric I used for the setting squares/triangles is a RWB polka dot fabric that I'd originally bought for a patriotic quilt, but never gotten around to using.

There will be two borders, and for the narrow inner border I'm thinking of adding a pop of color to it and using the same green that is in the focus print, followed by a navy or red border.

Gratitudes:

1. State Skills USA Conference is coming up the 10-13th next week....only 6 more days and it will be done!  Then on to the next thing.

2. Platelets were up a wee bit which is better than dropping again....and no more chemo scheduled at this time.  =)

Layout decision made.....

Decided to combine the first two layout designs for this.  Once the blocks are sewn together the center will measure 30" by 40".

Debating now on what to do with the borders to get it up to size for Sunshine Quilts.   The two options I'm thinking of at the moment are a solid 4" border of black or an inner border of black followed by an outer border of a novelty print of some sort.

Meanwhile  before I get to that point, I need to get the blocks actually sewing together first.  But that is a task for another day.

Gratitudes:

1. The dratted cough is not in my lungs so no bronchitis on top of everything else at the moment.

2. Health insurance.....a good thing with all the visits that i've been making this month.

Scraps, scraps and more scraps

I'm still working on the novelty print scraps.   Same originating "stash" of them for these blocks, just width of fabric or FQ depending on what I started with.   This pile runs from about 5.75" to 6" in length.

Finished blocks are 12" in size.   All fabrics in them are from my various scrap bins.  Fun in using them comes in from trying to remember that directional prints need to have both sides facing in the same direction.   I'm currently planning on making 12 blocks and then setting them with sashing.   When the top is finished it'll be donated to Sunshine Quilts.

Inspiration for block came from a picture I'd found on the internet several years ago and I have no clue where I found it now.  Block is super fast to make which makes me happy.

Any interest in my writing a quick tutorial for the finished quilt?

Finished Quilt Top and a Block Tutorial

The last quilt top I put together for Sunshine Quilts started with 4 blocks that a fellow member of the group had made from a FQ that I sent her.  Once the blocks were made, she then sent them to me to put into a quilt.   This is what I ended up making from the four blocks.

Normally I would have paper-pieced the alternating blocks, but didn't feel like doing the 32 blocks needed this way or wasting that much paper and ink.

The blocks that I used for the alternate blocks are composed of two different fabrics - the first being down the center of them on the diagonal, and the second on the corners of the block.

The first step to making this block is to figure out how long to cut the strip that goes down the middle of the block.   The easiest way to do this is to measure across the size of block you will need.   In my case I needed 6" finished blocks for my alternating blocks.   So I used a 6.5" square ruler and measured diagonally.   The length was approximately 10".   To make it easy, I cut strips that were 3 inches wide, and then sub cut each strip into 4 even pieces (approx. 10.5").  This technique can be used on any size block but remember to add about one inch to the measured length of the strip so that you have room to square them up without problems.

The second part of cutting the fabric for the block is to cut the corner triangles.  I cut 5.25" squares of the background fabric and then them in half diagonally one time.

The first step in assembling your block is to mark the center of the long side of the stip and the center of the long side of the triangle.  For my blocks, I just finger pressed the mid points and then matched them up.

Next sew the triangles onto each long side of the strip using a 1/4 inch seam.

Once the Triangles have been sewn on, then press the blocks flat.  I pressed the seams to the strip because that is the darker fabric in my blocks.   After pressing the block should look like the one shown at the right.  The center strip will stick out but that is ok.

Note - when you measure top to bottom or side to side, the dimensions should be at least 1/2 inch bigger than the unfinished block size that you need in order to be able to square them up properly.

Once pressed, lay your square ruler on top of the block as shown to the right making sure to center the ruler on the block.

To make it easier to trim the 32 blocks that I needed for this quilt I used a couple of pieces of tiger tape to mark where the seams between the triangles and strips should line up on the ruler.  This allowed me to quickly line up the square ruler on each block in order to keep the corners centered down the middle of the center fabric. If you wish to do something similar, a narrow painter's masking tape would work well on your ruler.

Your finished block should come out looking like this.   Have fun playing with fabrics used and how you lay them out.
