snac.daltux.net is a Fediverse instance that uses the ActivityPub protocol. In other words, users at this host can communicate with people that use software like Mastodon, Pleroma, Friendica, etc. all around the world.
This server runs the snac software and there is no automatic sign-up process.
Grammarly quietly made an #AI to sell bad writing advice using famous writers' names. They quickly had to backtrack as soon as people found out.
This gamble reflects a broader trend in the #tech industry: everyone is shipping features as quickly as an #LLM can write lines of code, with no way to spot problems until something breaks or someone sues them.
Vibe prototyping replaced thinking through things. But without direction, moving faster is worthless.
So apparently Netflix added most or all of the James Bond catalogue to the service a few weeks ago & now they're removing it again.
I'm not particularly beholden to 007 but it's a great example of how fucking exhausting this digital world is because of the constant twiddling going on behind the veil.
Every time you try using any digital product you may find it's different than last time.
It's like They™️ want to take object permanence away from us.
Following on from yesterday's blog post about the new design for profiles coming in Mastodon 4.6... here is the video of @imanijoy recent talk at @fossdesign where they discuss the challenges and detailed thought that goes into the design of new features (and the redesign of existing ones). 🖌️
English speakers of the fedi. In a software with the interface in English, Reading a menu with verbs such as Save, Open, Close, Edit, Format etc., do you read them as imperative (an order: "do this") or as an infinitive (the "base form" of the verb, like "to do this")?
Are you a native speaker or have English as a second language?

How to play music on your living room speakers, the Apple way: Click on Music app, expand controls floaty, click on weird symbol at the bottom, click on „show all speakers“ floaty, select your speaker, now click somewhere but do not hit the floaty. Now close the open playlist by swiping down. Be sure to not hit a song. Now you can select the playlist you wanted to play! Easy!
Just found out that #BeagleIM automatically fetches web links in messages and plays the page's video if there is one.
This is not acceptable behavior!!!
* It's annoying. There isn't any obvious way to stop the video.
* It's insecure. The linked page might attack vulnerabilities in Beagle's video player.
* It exposes the user's IP address to anyone who sends them a message, potentially physically endangering them.
Will uninstall and replace ASAP.

I remember that and still viscerally recall the firestorm that broke out on the #Debian mailing lists.
I am not a fan of #SystemD. While I recognize that Linux's implementation #SysVInit needed replacing, SystemD was not the right solution.
Even if there is some kind of "correctness" to it, the design is not based on #empathy or nor did it improve upon the user experience. It is a case study in the failure of not using design thinking.
We went from:
service $SERVICE start
To:
systemctl start $SERVICE
Why couldn't it be:
start $SERVICE
Of course, the additional info when checking a service's status is valuable and certainly an improvement, HOW it was implement is my biggest criticism. Also, SystemD sprawl. Poettering's terrible attitude didn't help either.
Is there any reason why the official Mastodon app (I use Android) is NOT showing a warning, if you try to post a picture without ALT-TEXT?
@apps does a great UX job here and reminds me, every time I forget to add an alt text.
If needed, I can add a feature request / bug ticket.
@Quasit
> When I click on the link, a new tab opens in which I'm not logged in
Ah, it's treating it as a standard webpage link, instead of a fediverse link.
> This is probably perfectly ordinary, and something that I should understand
Absolutely not on you. This is a #UX fail in the app you're using. Some of the apps I use with my Mastodon account, including @moshidon, do a pretty good job of telling the difference, and opening fediverse posts in-app.
Which app are you using there?
